  • Looking for a Holy Grail in e-learning: how to create reusable learning objects?
  • Today you can buy dozens and dozens of books about learning objects (LO). The subject seems to be mature enough to be used widely in learning and teaching practice. But after the initial hype less than ten years ago, things have not gone as smoothly as expected. Why? Predictions were promising: LO repositories will create a market for learning content, this will reduce costs for instructional design, shorten the development time for e-learning courses, different instructors will be able to use the same materials. But if we look around carefully, then despite a number of excellent examples (Chapman, 2007), LOs have not gained significant place in teaching and learning practice in most educational organizations. The number of available repositories and the number of LOs in them is growing, but not so fast as expected. Reuse and sharing of LOs lack widespread character. For example, in US (Matkin, 2002), with its huge higher education market, corporations and foundations started to finance e-learning content already more than ten years ago, hoping to earn their investment back quickly. But the higher education community is not a very typical community of "consumers", and investors claimed they miscalculated the demand. Cisco, one of the successful implementers of LOs, claims: "Very few organizations have actually developed a methodology to design, develop and implement Reusable Information Objects" (Cisco Systems Inc., 1999). In the rather developed Estonian e-learning community only 3% of teachers participating in the national e-learning conference in late 2007 claimed having used/created LOs. Many different kinds

  • Declarative Web 2.0
  • Web 2.0 applications have become popular as drivers of new types of Web content, but they have also introduced a new level of interface design in Web development; they are focusing on richer interfaces, user-generated content, and better interworking of Web-based applications. The current foundations of the Web 2.0, however, are strictly imperative in nature, which makes it difficult to develop applications which are robust, interoperable, and backwards compatible. Using a declarative approach for Web 2.0 applications, this new wave of applications can be built on a more robust foundation which is more in line with the Web’s style of using declarative methods whenever possible. We show a path how today’s imperative Web 2.0 applications can be regarded as a testbed as well as a first implementation for a revised version of Web 2.0 technologies, which will be based on declarative markup rather than imperative code. Fueling the second wave of the Web’s popularity, the term Web 2.0 has become highly popular for describing a new breed of Web applications. It is mainly perceived to refer to two major areas, one being user-generated content and the social networks around it, and the other being a set of technologies providing support for richer interfaces for Web applications, bringing the user experience of Web applications closer to that of desktop applications. In this paper, we refer to both areas; we argue that the contextual nature of Web 2.0 content needs a better representation, and we also argue that the same representation can be used
  • Nikon 35 mm Film Scanner LS-30 User's Guide
  • The LS-30 is a high-speed, high-resolution scanner capable of producing images suited to a wide variety of tasks, including desk- top publishing, design, and multi-media publishing. Its modular design allows you to change from scanning 35 mm slides to scanning 35 mm strip film “on the fly.” An adapter for scanning IX240 film is available separately. The LS-30 uses a high-speed SCSI interface for connection to computers running Mac OS System Software 7.1 or later, Windows 95 or later, or Windows NT 4.0 or later. The scanner driver software provided with your scanner, Nikon Scan 2.1, offers sophisticated pre-scan editing of images, including precise color correction, contrast, and brightness adjustment. Nikon Scan can be launched from any TWAIN-compliant application under Windows or from any application that supports Adobe Photoshop plug-ins (version 4.0 or higher) on the Macintosh. Nikon Scan can also be used as a “stand-alone” application, allowing you to save scanned images to disk without the help of another application. The user’s manuals for the LS-30 and Nikon Scan are divided into three parts. This User’s Guide offers a brief introduction to setting up the scanner and scanning images using Nikon Scan. More detailed reference manuals for the scanner and for Nikon Scan are provided on CD-ROM. To read these manuals you will need to install the Adobe Acrobat Reader software included on the refer- ence CD. In addition, a one-page Fast Track Guideis provided for experienced users who want to get started with the minimum of instruction. Where appropriate, this
  • Load Testing Web 2.0 Technologies Ajax-RIA-SOA-Web Services
  • Web 2.0, RIA, AJAX and SOA are terms and abbreviations we hear and use on a daily basis. But do we know what they mean for us as professional performance testers? This document provides an overview of the relevant Web2.0 terms and elaborates on how to run performance tests on these applications. The document targets the performance testing professional as well as the R&D manager looking for information on how to prepare for this new era. The internet world is evolving with new technologies and architecture models. Web2.0 is a major evolution of Internet applications and provides new options for internet application providers. Web2.0 enables improving the user experience, creating more efficient applications and increasing the productivity of the users and the enterprise. People most often associate Web2.0 with user-generated content websites, typified by tagging content, blogging, wish lists, and RSS feeds. Some enterprise applications boast a recent Web 2.0 interface called “Enterprise 2.0”, but, issues of performance, privacy and personalization are still blocking many enterprises from adopting this new internet trend. On the other hand technology enablers, such as the SOA system architecture and RIA’s rich UI are likely to eventually converge with Web 2.0 concepts. The combination of different technologies, architectures and concepts will all create new dimensions of internet applications. RadView, as a leading provider of performance testing software for Internet Applications, provides solutions and guidelines for testing Web2.0 applications. RadView’s current and future product roadmap offers a high level solution enabling developers to secure the Performance, Scalability and Reliability
