  • Stupid and Useful Microsoft Word Tricks
  • You should be aware that MS Word has several built-in features designed to “autocorrect” the text. This is because the program is designed for business users (for the most part), and often these corrections will not be appropriate for academic papers. However, you should realize that this feature is a problem. Here is a partial list of stupid “auto-corrections” that you might encounter: 1. The computer might try to turn prose text into outline format. You will suddenly observe your work as a numbered list. 2. In a similar fashion, the computer might take an outline and change the format – including its font, indentation, and text size. 3. The computer might try to change URLs into web addresses (highlighted in blue) which can be linked if the computer is online all the time. This is prohibited in MLA format. For example, a web address should read < http://www.mla.org> rather than http://www.mla.org. 4. The computer may convert ordinal numbers (such as 1st) to superscripted text (such as 1st). Most documentation styles do not allow superscripted text. 5. Initially, MS Word sets margins at 1.25 inches. MLA requires 1-inch margins. Consequently, you must correct this manually. To do so, the Mac user must click on the Format option of the menu bar (at the top of the screen), and select Document. Next, select Margins and adjust them to 1 inch. PC users should manually adjust the margin-ruler near the top of the screen. 6. Word users should also be aware that font changes take effect for text
  • Semantic Foundations of Jade pdf
  • Over the last decade, research in parallel architectures has led to many new parallel systems. These systems range from multiprocessors with shared address spaces, multi-computers with distributed address spaces, to networks of high performance workstations. Furthermore, the development of high speed interconnection networks makes it possible to connect the systems together, forming a tremendous computational resource. An effective way to use these machines is to partition a computation into coarse-grain tasks. The current language support for this computing environment is, however, rather primitive: programmers must explicitly manage the hardware resources using low level communication and synchronization primitives. This paper presents Jade, a new language designed to simplify the expression of coarse-grain parallelism. Download Semantic Foundations of Jade pdf

  • Mac OS X Hacks 100 Industrial-Strength Tips & Tools
  • You’re on a plane and desperately need to pass a file to (or play Quake against) your coworker. You both have Ethernet jacks, but there’s no net- work available to you. You both have wireless cards, but transmitter/receivers are a no-no aboard airliners. She has a floppy drive, but your iBook has never heard of these floppy things. You have a USB drive, but the file’s mas- sive. And you’re fresh out of CDs, or you’d simply burn one and pass it across. Oh, and she’s running Windows. If you have an Ethernet cable handy, you can plug one end into the Ethernet jack of each of your machines, open your System Preferences Network pane, and select Built-in Ethernet from the Show pull-down menu. If at least one of the computers is a Macintosh of recent vin- tage (PowerBook G4, iMac 17”, or iBook, at the time of this writing), you don’t even need one of those special crossover Ethernet cables. • Modeling a dragon with NURBS in Maya
  • This piece of article will show you step by step of how the dragon is created using Maya. There are three type of modeling method in Maya, NURBS modeling, Subdivision modeling and Polygon modeling, each of them have their advantages and disadvantages. However we will build the dragon using patch NURBS surface techniques. The tools that I use to model this dragon are Birail tools, NURBS primitive, Fillet Blend Tools and etc. In the first section, I will show you how the dragon is created by using Maya. Next section, texturing the dragon will be shown. We need to paint the texture and create bump map in PhotoShop, but before that, I will need Deep Paint 3D to create reference line on how the texture will be distorted by NURBS. The detail will be covered in the texturing section. Before I start launching Maya, I will do some concept sketching on paper. This is important, as it will be easier for me to visualise the object I have in mind later on. I wanted to create a dragon between realistic and imaginative. I want it to look like a T-Rex but with horn and larger forelimbs. Only the side orthographic is needed to create the model. When I have done, I will scan in the sketch and save it as JPEG. • Importing Microsoft Access tables to SAS Datasets
  • There are several ways to import Microsoft Access tables into SAS. They are as follows: 1) Using SAS/ACCESS to ODBC: 1) SAS/CORE, SAS/BASE and SAS/ACCESS interface to ODBC licensed and installed at your site. 2) The Microsoft Access ODBC driver must be installed and configured on your PC. 3) Use the following code to read the Microsoft Access file into a SAS dataset. Libname sasuser ‘c:foo’; Proc SQL; Connect to ODBC (prompt); Create table sasuser.TEST As select * from connection to ODBC (select * from tablename); disconnect from odbc; quit; - ‘Prompt’will activate a pop-up window where you can choose your data source name. Alternatively, you can use ‘DSN=’in the parenthesis and specify your data source name. - ‘sasuser.TEST’ is the name of the SAS dataset you will create from this query. - ‘tablename’must be the specific unit of data that we are reading. For Microsoft Access the DSN references the database(.MDB file), and the ‘tablename’refers to the table in the database. Download pdf Importing Microsoft Access tables to SAS Datasets
  • How to Use Social Software in Higher Education
  • The fact that you are reading this handbook probably means that you are experienced in e-Learning implementation at a university or similar institution. You will probably be aware of the tools and styles of working on LMS, and will be used to communicating whilst working and learning online. But at the same time, by surfing the net and probably by observing your students, you will clearly see that changes are coming. Freely available new technologies, common access to the Internet and to information, new types of social interactions mediated by technology; all of these things require a shift in the way that we learn and teach. e-Learning using new technologies is an innovative learning method. During recent years, ‘innovation’ has become a real buzz word. Many companies have revolutionized their products or business models. In education literature, you can find many case studies and best practices on how to modernize teaching and learning process. But before taking action, we should try to understand innovation in the context of technology-enhanced learning. What is new and what is now outdated? We can understand all this as technology, but also as new ways to communicate, work and learn. Within this handbook we think of innovation as technology, adapted for new learning purposes. The term ‘Web 2.0’ was coined by O’Reilly (2005) as a common denominator for recent trends heading towards the ‘Read-Write Web’, allowing everyone to publish resources on the web using simple and open, personal and collaborative publishing tools, known as social software: blogs,

  • Google's Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide
  • Welcome to Google's Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide. This document first began as an effort to help teams within Google, but we thought it'd be just as useful to webmasters that are new to the topic of search engine optimization and wish to improve their sites' interaction with both users and search engines. Although this guide won't tell you any secrets that'll automatically rank your site first for queries in Google (sorry!), following the best practices outlined below will make it easier for search engines to both crawl and index your content. Search engine optimization is often about making small modifications to parts of your website. When viewed individually, these changes might seem like incremental improvements, but when combined with other optimizations, they could have a noticeable impact on your site's user experience and performance in organic search results. You're likely already familiar with many of the topics in this guide, because they're essential ingredients for any webpage, but you may not be making the most out of them. Even though this guide's title contains the words "search engine", we'd like to say that you should base your optimization decisions first and foremost on what's best for the visitors of your site. They're the main consumers of your content and are using search engines to find your work. Focusing too hard on specific tweaks to gain ranking in the organic results of search engines may not deliver the desired results. Search engine optimization is about putting your site's best foot forward when
