  • Tim Berners-Lee’s vision of the World Wide Web was for a tool which created and gathered knowledge through human interaction and collaboration. Web 2.0 is a stage of development in which the Web is progressing towards this goal. The conclusion I’ve come to is that their significance lies in their ability to allow the average user to organize online information in such a way that is useful, meaningful and personally relevant. They help people navigate the virtual world and find what they are looking for. They do this by leveraging key characteristics of the Web for a variety of different forms of communication. They can tackle the Web’s inherent problem (unfathomable amounts of information) by capitalizing of its inherent possibilities (collective intelligence, wide variety of types of knowledge, social networks – all the potential benefits of millions of people sharing a virtual space).   • Open Source Content Management Systems: An Argumentative Approach
  • Businesses currently face the daily challenge of managing content efficiently. These businesses are being flooded with information from web Content Management Systems (CMS) that present an all-too-simple picture. Instead, content management systems should solve the problem of turning content into information and information into knowledge. Content Management Systems are not just a product or a technology. CMS is defined as a generic term which refers to a wide range of processes that underpin the “next-generation” of medium to large-scale websites. Content management is a process which deals with the creation, storage, modification, retrieval and display of data or content. This report evaluates seven open source CMS products. The comparison is based on eight categories as seen from a business perspective. These categories are; applications, data repository, deployment, integration, revision control, user interface, user management and workflow. Each category is scored from 0 to 10 points and the overall score is determined based on the average of all categories. The comparison clearly shows how most CMS products require further development prior to being used within a commercial environment. The few CMS products which are ready for commercial deployment contain an inherent design flaw. This flaw refers to the inefficient management of large-scale user databases. Businesses are currently seeking alternative methods to improve their services and Open Source Software (OSS) is one such method. This will require OSS authors to consider the implications of running their software within commercial environments and accommodate business requirements.   • Here is an example of an attempt to plot parametric data in a scientifically meaningful way, using Microsoft Excel. This example describes an experience using the Office X version for Macintosh. The details may change with different versions, but the principle stays the same – the author must control the appearance of all aspects of the figure. We cannot count on programmers to have correctly guessed our intended use of the application. If you find that it is just too awkward to prepare a proper figure using a computer program, then do it by hand. If you use a hand drawn graph do keep in mind its purpose. If it is to be a working document, not to be presented or published, then you may want to make it as large as you can, ignoring margins, for maximum accuracy. For a paper or presentation, just keep the figure well within the margins of your sheet of graph paper, since the purpose is to illustrate the result, not to use the graph as a working document. You don't need to fill up all available space. If you submit a manuscript for publication or conduct a formal presentation, then you will probably have to prepare a computer generated figure.   • Python was created by Guido van Rossum in 1990 to solve problems in the development of the Amoeba operating system. It is named after the British television show Monty Python’s Flying Circus. The use of Python has grown steadily over 1990’s to its current state where it is used in a variety of applications and environments. Python is a interpreted, imperative, weakly-typed programming language. Unlike a compiled language, interpreted programming languages do not have to be compiled. Instead, the source file is translated (a.k.a. interpreted) by another program (the interpreter) when it is executed. Compiled languages, on the other hand, are executed directly by the computer. Since Python is a weakly-typed language, a variable can have different types during a program’s execution. For example, the variable a could represent a number, a string, and a list in succession in Python; this is not allowed in a strongly-typed language. These notes assume a basic familiarity with programming concepts. In general, it is assumed one has had some programming experience in an object oriented language (such as C++). Concepts such as compiling, functions/procedures, dynamic memory, conditional statements, input/output, modular programming, namespaces, classes, objects, and inheritance should be familiar. The examples in these notes will be given in Python 2.4. It is assumed that the reader has access to a a Python interpreter. The resources at the end of this document provide links to downloadable versions of the languages.
