EXPERT RIGGING IN MAYATentacled appendages have been around as long as weird creatures in movies and comic books have existed. But creating the proper movement, and getting the right look, is deceptively difficult. Mechanical tentacles such as the sentinels from the Matrix series, or like Doc Ock’s in Spider-Man 2, are particularly challenging.
This tutorial walks you through setting up a character with tentacles, and should give you a good idea of the general approach to take. Part of working in CG is the ability to push the limits of reality – mechanised parts can be exaggerated to stretch and reach further than possible, or be squashed like a slinky – if set up properly, they can do anything you like. Michael Ingrassia, from Escape Studios in London, has provided us with a cartoony character with tentacles to rig and animate. I’m assuming you’re already familiar enough with Maya that you can rig a complete character without a problem, so we’ll be focusing on the tentacles and claws – how they attach to the body, and how all the parts work together to help bring the character to life. The character rig is very basic, so if you’re trying to do anything fancy, you’ll probably need to add more to it.

Now that you’ve convinced the client that you can create a cool web site to complement the client’s store activity, it’s time to stop celebrating and start thinking about how to put into practice all the promises made to the client. As usual, when you lay down on paper the technical requirements you must meet, everything starts to seem a bit more complicated than initially anticipated.
It is strongly recommended to consistently follow an efficient project-management methodology to maximize the chances of the project’s success, on budget and on time. The requirementsISDN Connect Data and Voice Terminal Adapter User ManualThe CONNECT is a Terminal Adapter (TA), i.e. the ISDN equivalent of a modem on the PSTN (the analogue telephone network). It allows standard serial data terminals (DTEs), such as personal computers, to be interconnected across the ISDN. The CONNECT is as easy to install and use as a modem and will operate with all existing terminals and communications applications that use the Hayes Standard AT Command Set. This means the engine will not start even when the registered key is turned to the START position: • When the key comes into contact with a metallic or magnetic object. • When the key comes into contact with another immobilizing key, or with some other transponder. In case like these, the theft-alarm indicator (located in the instrument cluster) will blink after 10 seconds. The theft-alarm indicator will flash for approximately 30 seconds and then go off. Remove the above object from the key and turn the key back to the ACC or LOCK position. Then try again to start the engine.
If the engine does not start, consult an authorized dealer. 2. Since there is a transponder built into the key, be careful not to cause shock to the key, such as by dropping it or by putting heavy objects on top of it. 3. Do not leave the key where it may be exposed to heat caused by the high temperature and high humidity. 4. Sentry key is not compatible with remote starting systems. Use of these systems may result in vehicle starting problems and a loss of security protection. 5. A system failure is suspected when the ignition key is turned to the START position, the engine does not start. In such a case, consult an authorized dealer.
