How to setup and secure Snort, MySQL and Acid on FreeBSD 4.7 ReleaseThis document will help a user install FreeBSD 4.7 Release, Snort 1.9.0, MySQL 3.23.53, and ACID-0.9.6b21. It will also guide the user through the process of securing the machine and getting the snort sensor(s) to log to a central database over stunnel. The intention is to give users that are new to any of the software the opportunity to build an enterprise-class system based completely on free, open-source tools. Following the instructions in this document will get you the following:
• Multiple FreeBSD boxes, one running the Windowmaker desktop. I chose Windowmaker because the intention of this tutorial is to create dedicated Snort machines. In other words Gnome and KDE are overkill for what we are doing here (and it looks nice).
• Locked-down machines (C2 in 2002!). I tried to be responsible with the securing of these boxes, but this is not a definitive guide to securing FreeBSD; there are several links to those at the end. If I have missed something obvious, feel free to point it out (nicely please) with your suggestion on exactly how to fix it.
• Multiple Snort sensors logging to a central MySql server/viewing station.
• An easy method of updating your software via the ports collection.

Introduced first on California-bound vehicles and, by 1981, on all U.S. vehicles, the Bosch system improved the performance, efficiency, reliability, and quality of engine operations. Solely responsible for a 23 horsepower increase on the 2 liter engines, this system, known as Bosch L-Jetronic, was popular not only on FIATs but on nearly every European car produced in the 1980's.
The L-Jetronic was the first mass-produced, fully electronic fuel injection system. Prior to L-Jetronic, mechanical fuel injection systems had proven that directly injecting atomized fuel into the cylinder resulted in better engine operation. Combining this direct injection theory with electronic sensors, valves, and meters - all controlled by a central computer - resulted in better operation than before.
The basic operation is straightforward. An engine is basically an air pump, drawing mixed fuel and air into the intake manifold, compressing it (followed by a spark-triggered explosion), and expelling it through the exhaust manifold. In a fuel injection system the entire operation is based on the amount of air entering the system. The engine pulls air through an air filter and into an air flow meter. The air flow meter measures the amount of air entering the system. Once measured, the air flows into a large hose that is connected to the intake manifold (a plenum). The intake manifold has a throttle plate that is connected to the driver's foot (the accelerator pedal). Wiring Instructions
The diagram below shows the location of the wires on the ECU connector plugs that are used to tie in the BCS. Be sure to trace the wires to the ECU pins to insure that connections are made to the correct wires. Do not go by wire color alone. You must confirm the correct wire by connector location. Connections will be made to the wiring harness a few inches from the side of the engine computer. All connections are made using the crimp connectors that are provided.
The T-tap connectors are in two parts. The dark red piece is clamped onto the wire with a pair of pliers. After striping the corresponding wire from the BCS, crimp on the male spade connector.
