  • Parallel Prefix Network Generation: an Application of Functional Programming
  • Parallel prefix networks are used in priority encoders, and to compute carries in fast adders. A typical microprocessor contains many such networks, and often they are hot- spots. Although parallel prefix (or scan) has been much studied, surprisingly many questions remain unanswered. As geometries shrink, it is not at all clear how to make low power prefix networks with the desired timing properties. Here, I develop a method of writing very highly parameterised parallel prefix network generators in which we specify the combinators used to build the networks and then search for a topology that matches the given delay constraints. This first case study indicates that, in this functional setting, combinators and search fit well together. The resulting prefix networks are both small and shallow, and likely to be useful in low power applications. Parallel prefix is one of the fundamental algorithms of computer science, and it has been much studied. Yet many theoretical and practical questions remain open. On the theoretical side, we have not had good enough methods to design small shallow prefix networks with limited fanout. We have not either had good enough methods of producing networks that are adapted to the delay profile of their inputs. These are the problems that I solve towards the end of this paper. Both of these problems are interesting in practice too. Small networks promise low power, and here I show first results indicating that we can achieve low power in practice, although much remains to be done. The approach that I

  • Internet Service Provider Networks: Simplifying POP Architectures PDF
  • The Growth of Internet Traffic While some previous estimates of the Internet’s growth rate were exaggerated, market research firms now generally agree that Internet bandwidth consumption is growing at about 100% per year. Based on its research, IDC expects this growth rate to persist until 2007, with aggregate traffic growing from an estimated 180 petabits/day in 2002 to 5,175 petabits/day by the end of 2007. Sources of traffic growth will include new subscribers and increased Internet usage by existing enterprise subscribers. However, most of the traffic growth is expected to come from wider adoption of broadband access services by existing subscribers. Broadband access encourages increased usage of the Internet and enables new user services such as IP telephony, digital media distribution, etc. Along with the need for more bandwidth to support these new services, residential and business customers alike are expecting higher levels of network reliability and predictability at lower and lower price per bit levels. The ability to predict and guarantee service levels and maintain QoS will not only add to customer or user satisfaction but also open up new competitive advantages by leveraging the network as a strategic asset. • Migrating Atlas to ASP.NET AJAX Final Content
  • Migrating Atlas applications to ASP.NET AJAX sounds like a rather hard and messy task; all applications have to be changed. However, in most cases, not much effort is required for the migration. There are several reasons for this. First, the most important features of Atlas changed only marginally in ASP.NET AJAX. And second, the most convenient features already exist, not in the ASP.NET AJAX package itself but in the Atlas Control Toolkit, which is now called ASP.NET AJAX Control Toolkit. This Short Cut mentions important changes for every chapter in Programming Atlas, if applicable. Not all of the functionality used in Programming Atlas survived the switch to ASP.NET AJAX; however, the most important elements of the framework are still there, and continue to work in a very similar fashion. Of course this Short Cut is not complete and does not cover every aspect that has been changed. It should help you, however, to judge whether it is feasible to port existing Atlas applications to ASP.NET AJAX or not. Download pdf Migrating Atlas to ASP.NET AJAX Final Content
  • FioranoMQ Native CSharp RTL Sample Applications Guide
  • FioranoMQ has support for handling expired messages on the FioranoMQ server for the PTP sub system of JMS. The Dead Message Queue (DMQ) is created on the server to handle expired messages, which were earlier deleted from the FioranoMQ server. These programs illustrate the basic functionality of FioranoDMQ using the FioranoMQ Native CSharp Runtime Library. This directory contains the following three programs. • Sender.cs - It implements a client application sending some data on "primaryQueue". Few messages sent have infinite time to live, while remaining have very small TTL. • Receiver.cs - It receives messages synchronously from "primaryQueue". • ReceiverDMQ.cs - It receives messages synchronously from dead message queue. To run these samples using FioranoMQ, do the following: 1. Before running these samples, make sure that you have set the properties named Fiorano->mq->ptp->Queues->PrimaryQueue->enableDMQ, fiorano->mq->ptp- >queues->primaryQueue->isDbCleanupEnabled & fiorano->mq->ptp- >queuingSubSystem->EnableNotificationOnDeadMessage to true. 2. Compile each of the source files. The %FMQ_DIR%nativecsharpscripts directory contains a script called csclientbuild.bat which compiles the Native CSharp program. 3. Run the ReceiverDMQ by executing ReceiverDMQ.exe executable file. 4. Run the Sender by executing the Sender.exe executable file. 5. Run the receiver by executing the Receiver.exe file. Receiver will receive messages that had infinite time to live and remaining messages will be received by ReceiverDMQ. Download pdf FioranoMQ Native CSharp RTL Sample Applications Guide
  • Adobe Flex 2 Programming ActionScript 3.0
  • This manual provides a foundation for developing applications in ActionScript 3.0. To best understand the ideas and techniques described, you should already be familiar with general programming concepts such as data types, variables, loops, and functions. You should also understand basic object-oriented programming concepts like classes and inheritance. Prior knowledge of ActionScript 1.0 or ActionScript 2.0 is helpful but not necessary. The manual contains numerous sample files for important or commonly used classes to demonstrate application programming concepts for those APIs. Sample files are packaged in ways to make them easier to load and use with Adobe® Flex™ Builder 2 and may include wrapper files. However, the core sample code is pure ActionScript 3.0 that you can use in whichever development environment you prefer. ActionScript 3.0 can be written and compiled a number of ways, including: ? Using the Adobe Flex Builder 2 development environment ? Using any text editor and a command-line compiler, such as the one provided with Flex Builder 2 ? Using the Adobe® Flash® CS3 authoring tool from Adobe For more information about ActionScript development environments Download Adobe Flex 2 Programming ActionScript 3.0
