DownloadThe Art of Unix Programming Teaching GuideThe Art Of Unix Programming (TAOUP) was written primarily to be used as a self-education tool for professional or enthusiatic amateur programmers. It was not designed to be a course textbook, but it may usefully be employed as one. This instructional guide is intended to help.
TAOUP is different from the general run of Unix tutorials, which tend to concentrate on the level of basic shell usage, application programming interfaces and other relatively low-level issues. TAOUP very deliberately focuses at a higher level: design principles, style, and the history that has informed both. It is not a replacement for an introductory UNIX textbook, but a valuable complement to same.
TAOUP could be appropriate in at least three different contexts:
• Courses on the Unix operating system. TAOUP is appropriate as a core text in a course on Unix, especially one oriented toward programmers (as opposed to, say, training system administrators).
• Intermediate-to-advanced courses on software engineering. The problems of complexity control in larger software systems, and the lesson Unix experience teaches about that control, are a core theme of the book.
• Courses on the history of computing. The material is presented in a historical frame, with an emphasis on technology as a human activity. The evolution of Unix makes an interesting lens through which to examine interactions between technology, economics, and subcultural history.

It includes a robust set of application programming interfaces (APIs) that allows an application to access speech resources. It contains several utilities that enable developers to define and manage what the user can say within an application. There are also several sample programs that can help programmers as they develop their applications for speech. Finally, there are distributable runtime elements that are included with an application that uses IBM ViaVoice.
IBM SMAPI supports only speech recognition functions. The SMAPI interface set is the native interface for the ViaVoice engine. This section contains a description of the overall architecture of ViaVoice.
The heart of a speech recognition system is known as the speech recognition engine. The speech recognition engine recognizes speech input and translates it into text that an application understands. The application decides what to do with the recognized text. It can transcribe it literally for dictation, or it can act on it for commands.
Applications can access the speech recognition engine through a speech recognition API. For ViaVoice, this API is known as the Speech Manager API, or SMAPI, for short. SMAPI is a conventional API. This means that the API is defined as part of the resource; in this case, SMAPI is defined as part of the speech engine. With an API, speech becomes a resource to all applications, just like any system resource (mouse, video, and so on). The TA is equipped with channel bundling feature which allows the user to use both B channels to maximize the 128k bandwidth for data transmission. The Maya workspace
The Maya workspace is where you conduct most of your work within Maya. The workspace is the central window where your objects and most editor panels appear. When you start Maya for the first time, the workspace displays by default in a perspective window, or panel. There are the other components of the default perspective view panel:
- The panel is labeled persp at the bottom to indicate that you are viewing the Maya scene from a perspective camera view.
- The panel has its own menu bar at the top left corner of the panel. These menus allow you to access tools and functions related to that specific panel.
- The grid is displayed with two heavy lines intersecting at the center of the Maya scene. This central location is called the origin. The origin is the center of Maya's 3D world, and with all object's directional values measured from this location.
