Microsoft Word Printing IssuesThere have been several reports of “printing problems” in MS Word reported over the last couple of months. After much research and testing, I believe that I have been able to determine the probable cause of these problems and a potential fix.
Microsoft Word is highly customizable program. The problem arises when changes are made to the default printer settings without the user knowing this has happened. This could be interpreted as a “corruption”, but if used as designed, it really is a feature. To better understand how to avoid this problem, users need to better understand one of the basic processes of the MS Word program. Word maintains a file called normal.dot. This is a template file – the basic pattern that Word uses every time that it starts a new blank document. This file can be customized if, for example, users always print to non-standard size paper or wanted specific margins or tabs.
The “problem” appears to be caused by changes being made to this normal.dot template. My guess is that there are one or more documents “floating around” where the template has been changed and the current user inadvertently updates their own normal.dot to match.

Buzzwords like Comet or RIA are on everybody’s lips. In the area of enterprise software RCP is already firmly established as a client application platform. Replacing or extending existing Rich-Client-Applications with web front-ends has traditionally required a significant investment. The Rich Ajax Platform (RAP) provides a fast-path bridge between the application development with RCP and the increasingly important Web 2.0 environment
How do I get my RCP-Application on the Web? This question is asked more and more these days. Besides pure provisioning solutions like Java Web Start there are different approaches that use Eclipse Equinox on the server and recreate the user interface using JSPs or similar technologies. This approach has the disadvantage of a reduced code reuse in the UI, since it is almost impossible to recreate the workbench concept and the familiar extension points with different technologies. This is remedied by RAP, a web-platform that can execute regular RCP applications with few restrictions. This gives developers the opportunity to take an existing RCP application and deliver it as an “ajaxified” web application with a small effort, without coming into contact with Servlets, HTML or JavaScript. With it, RCP concepts like Views, Perspectives or Wizards can be put into web applications.
The First Steps
In order to become familiar with RAP we will start by installing and starting the available demo application. To do this, we download a new RAP version from the project's homepage [1] and unpack it in any directory. RAP is being delivered asAJAXSearch: Crawling, Indexing and Searching Web 2.0 ApplicationsCurrent search engines such as Google and Yahoo! are prevalent for searching the Web. Search in dynamic pages, however, is either inexistent or far from perfect. AJAX and Rich Internet Application are such applications. They are increasingly frequent on the Web (in YouTube, Amazon, GMail, Yahoo!Mail) or mobile devices and are offering a high degree of interactivity to the user, by seamlessly loading content from the server without the need to refresh the page. Current search engines cannot correctly index AJAX applications. This produces false positives and false negatives, because search engines do not understand the application logic that loads content dynamically. Crawling an AJAX application is a difficult problem. Since the user invokes events on the page, crawling must identify the different application states generated by the client-side logic.
This demo sets the stage for this new type of search and shows that a search engine for AJAX can be built. Among others, the challenges, as opposed to traditional search engines, are: automatically identifying states by triggering events, efficiently crawling application states, avoiding the invocation of potentially very numerous events, scalability in the number of events, duplicate elimination of states, result presentation and aggregation, ranking. The demo presents the AJAX search engine: crawler, indexer and query processor, applied on a real application and showcases challenges and solutions.

In particular, asynchronous pre-fetching of data in order to provide a smooth web browsing experience and richer HTTP payloads (e.g., Javascript libraries) of Web 2.0 applications induce larger, heavier, and more bursty traffic on the underlying networks. We present a traffic study of Web 2.0 applications including Google Maps, modern Web-email, and social networking Web sites, and compare them with all HTTP traffic. We highlight the key differences of Web 2.0 traffic from traditional HTTP traffic through statistical analysis.
