TCP/IP Internetworking With gawkThis chapter provides a (necessarily) brief introduction to computer networking concepts. For many applications of gawk to TCP/IP networking, we hope that this is enough. For more advanced tasks, you will need deeper background, and it may be necessary to switch to lower-level programming in C or C++.
There are two real-life models for the way computers send messages to each other over a network. While the analogies are not perfect, they are close enough to convey the major concepts. These two models are the phone system (reliable byte-stream communications), and the postal system (best-effort datagrams).
Reliable Byte-streams (Phone Calls)
When you make a phone call, the following steps occur:
1. You dial a number.
2. The phone system connects to the called party, telling them there is an incoming call. (Their phone rings.)
3. The other party answers the call, or, in the case of a computer network, refuses to answer the call.
4. Assuming the other party answers, the connection between you is now a duplex (two-way), reliable (no data lost), sequenced (data comes out in the order sent) data stream.
5. You and your friend may now talk freely, with the phone system moving the data (your voices) from one end to the other. From your point of view, you have a direct end-to-end connection with the person on the other end.
The same steps occur in a duplex reliable computer networking connection. There is considerably more overhead in setting up the communications, but once it’s done, data moves in both directions, reliably, in sequence.

Working with data in Microsoft Access databases can be preferable to working with spreadsheets for a number of reasons. One database file can hold several tables, which makes consolidating and organizing data easier. Databases are also great for calculating summaries and aggregating data more efficiently than a spreadsheet. Access is a relational database, which means that you can bring related data stored in different tables together to summarize and calculate data; a feat that a spreadsheet like Excel cannot perform. Databases are a necessity when working with large datasets, as spreadsheets have a limit of 65,000 records. Finally, Microsoft Access databases are compatible with ArcGIS, as tables within Access databases can be directly accessed by ArcGIS and added to ArcMap. Tables can then be joined to boundary files based on a common field, and the data within the tables can be mapped. This is highly preferable to working with table in the dbf file format, which has very particular syntax rules that makes them difficult to work with. Access databases can also serve as geodatabases for holding boundary files and data tables (for instructions on importing shapefiles into Access, see the Import Shapefiles to Access tutorial).

As a vehicle for learning these techniques, we develop a model of a whimsical structure that I have called the Monkish Shot Tower after a group of imaginary Monks who have refined the technology of manufacturing lead shot for firearms, and the like. The tower is designed around the perfect number 7, features an external spiral stair, an elaborate canopy on top, and a hole down the centre. The final structure is illustrated in Figure 1 below.
This tutorial will introduce the following concepts and techniques:
• simple solid modelling with solid primitives & CSG operations (the tower);
• construction of complex solid objects (stair and landing);
• user coordinate systems and positioning of objects (external stairs);
• advanced use of the CSG operations (tapering the stairs);
• simple surface modelling (the roof canopy and handrails);
• surface modelling versus solid modelling (the handrails);
• meshed surfaces (the landing “sails” for shading).
As with every drawing that you produce with AutoCAD you should begin by establishing your drawing area by setting the Drawing Limits, Units and using Zoom All to expand out to a full view of your drawing area. Do that now, setting the limits to 20000 x 15000.

Typically, the TS Modem comes with a 33K baud modem, though it can be purchased with the optional feature of a 56K baud modem.
