  • Jmp - An Introductory User's Guide
  • This guide is intended to help you begin to use JMP, a basic statistics package, and apprise you of its general capabilities and limitations. This manual assumes that you are familiar with operating a Macintosh computer. Its purpose is not to explain the meaning of statistical tests and terms. Before attempting to use JMP you must decide what you need to do with your data and what results you would like to see. This manual takes you from that point and teaches you how to get the information you seek from JMP. Please refer to your textbook or professor for a detailed understanding of the statistics and probability involved in your project. GETTING STARTED To use JMP and create a new file, double click on the JMP icon and select New from the File menu. To open a sample datafile or any other JMP datafile just double click on the icon. This automatically opens the JMP application as well as the datafile. JMP looks like a spreadsheet. In order to use it, you must first fill the columns with your data. Then you must ask JMP to analyze the data according to specifications that will yield the results you desire. When you create a new file, one column will automatically appear. You can begin putting data in that column by highlighting the first block and typing in a piece of information. Hit the tab key to move to the next row. Additional columns can be created and deleted by selecting from the Cols
  • Case Study on the Bluetooth Vulnerabilities in Mobile Devices
  • Summary As the widespread use and acceptance of Bluetooth continues concerns are being raised related to security vulnerabilities and privacy issues inherent in the use of this technology. Inadequate device resources and lack of user awareness has compounded this issue where the emphasis on design constraints, functionality and ease of use sometimes outweigh security concerns. Recently some concerns have being highlighted relating to the possible security vulnerabilities in commonly used devices, and also the possibility of the imperceptible tracking of device users through the use of distributed and connected Bluetooth sensor nodes. This paper discusses some of these issues and highlights a number of vulnerabilities in the current generation of Bluetooth enabled devices. In particular, the current methods being used to exploit these vulnerabilities are discussed and the results from a case study are presented which identify the percentage of popular devices susceptible to this type of misuse. Key words: Bluetooth Security, Bluesnarfing, Bluebug, Privacy. Download pdf Case Study on the Bluetooth Vulnerabilities in Mobile Devices

  • Performance Modeling for Dynamic Algorithm Selection
  • Adaptive algorithms are an important technique to achieve portable high performance. They choose among solution methods and optimizations according to expected performance on a particular machine. Grid environments make the adaptation problem harder, because the optimal decision may change across runs and even during runtime. Therefore, the performance model used by an adaptive algorithm must be able to change decisions without high overhead. In this paper, we present work that is modifying previous research into rapid performance modeling to support adaptive grid applications through sampling and high granularity modeling. We also outline preliminary results that show the ability to predict differences in performance among algorithms in the same program. Grid environments [1] present novel performance challenges, adding variability to many characteristics of high performance code. Heterogeneous platforms and varying network performance mean that the best algorithm for an application may change between runs of an application, and even during execution. Adaptive algorithms, developed to support portable performance in libraries, present an excellent opportunity to deal with these challenges by switching algorithms based on runtime information. To choose the optimal algorithm, a performance prediction must be made based on this information and the performance characteristics of the candidate algorithms. Because it is important to keep the combined overhead of measurement, modeling, prediction, and adaptation low, current time-consuming modeling techniques are not suitable for grid environments. We propose using a combination of ongoing research into rapid performance modeling and new development of a general adaptive algorithm framework to support exploration of portable performance on

  • TCP/IP Internetworking With gawk
  • This chapter provides a (necessarily) brief introduction to computer networking concepts. For many applications of gawk to TCP/IP networking, we hope that this is enough. For more advanced tasks, you will need deeper background, and it may be necessary to switch to lower-level programming in C or C++. There are two real-life models for the way computers send messages to each other over a network. While the analogies are not perfect, they are close enough to convey the major concepts. These two models are the phone system (reliable byte-stream communications), and the postal system (best-effort datagrams). Reliable Byte-streams (Phone Calls) When you make a phone call, the following steps occur: 1. You dial a number. 2. The phone system connects to the called party, telling them there is an incoming call. (Their phone rings.) 3. The other party answers the call, or, in the case of a computer network, refuses to answer the call. 4. Assuming the other party answers, the connection between you is now a duplex (two-way), reliable (no data lost), sequenced (data comes out in the order sent) data stream. 5. You and your friend may now talk freely, with the phone system moving the data (your voices) from one end to the other. From your point of view, you have a direct end-to-end connection with the person on the other end. The same steps occur in a duplex reliable computer networking connection. There is considerably more overhead in setting up the communications, but once it’s done, data moves in both directions, reliably, in sequence. Download pdf
