  • This book provides a set of design and implementation guidelines for writing secure programs for Linux and Unix systems. Such programs include application programs used as viewers of remote data, web applications (including CGI scripts), network servers, and setuid/setgid programs. Specific guidelines for C, C++, Java, Perl, Python, TCL, and Ada95 are included. This book describes a set of design and implementation guidelines for writing secure programs on Linux and Unix systems. For purposes of this book, a “secure program” is a program that sits on a security boundary, taking input from a source that does not have the same access rights as the program. Such programs include application programs used as viewers of remote data, web applications (including CGI scripts), network servers, and setuid/setgid programs. This book does not address modifying the operating system kernel itself, although many of the principles discussed here do apply. These guidelines were developed as a survey of “lessons learned” from various sources on how to create such programs (along with additional observations by the author), reorganized into a set of larger principles. This book includes specific guidance for a number of languages, including C, C++, Java, Perl, Python, TCL, and Ada95. This book does not cover assurance measures, software engineering processes, and quality assurance approaches, which are important but widely discussed elsewhere. Such measures include testing, peer review, configuration management, and formal methods.   • This tutorial is intended to teach new animation students a few basic animation techniques and workflow based on fundamental animation principles using Maya and a free character setup named walkingBall_v2.3 created by the author. This character setup or “rig” has many useful features without being overwhelming to newer students. This tutorial assumes you have a basic understanding of how to navigate the Maya interface, find menu commands, and other basic computer file management skills. Powerful 3D applications such as Maya require a predefined location to save data and files while you are working. Large studio animation production lines typically create custom software for managing project file structures, to control naming conventions, and to track revisions. Absent such large studio resources we will use the method of organizing files and data that the developers of Maya created called a “Project”. The beauty of this is that you can have multiple projects simultaneously, each with its own set of resources This tutorial also assumes you are somewhat new to 3D software and animation concepts. We will be using a basic pose-to-pose approach of animation. Pose-to-pose animation is what its name implies, creating character movement by establishing primary positions, or poses, and methodically moving the character from one pose to the next. Also, it is worth remembering that just because the replacement CPU has, for example, double the clock rate of the old unit doesn’t necessarily mean that the new one will increase the processing performance of the PC in question by anything like 100%.   • Reliable computer systems used in the telecommunication industry, in cars and automated factories (process control) are often implemented as special purpose systems which are vendor-specific, expensive, hard to maintain and difficult to upgrade. Often, those systems apply proprietary techniques to achieve security and predictable timing behavior, even in case of faults. With the need of integrating multiple of those control systems into a bigger whole, requirements arise to open up proprietary systems for standard (non real-time) distributed computing technology. Component-oriented programming provides a promising way to system composition out of units with contractually specified interfaces and explicit context dependencies. Software component can be deployed independently, they are subject to composition by third parties. There exist a number of distributed component frameworks, notably the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) [14] , Microsoft’s Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM/COM+) [4] , SUN’s JavaBean Model [7] , and the relatively new .NET framework. Although all of these frameworks simplify the implementation of complex, distributed systems significantly, the support of techniques for reliable, fault-tolerant, and secure software, such as group communication protocols or replication is very limited. Any fault tolerance extension for components needs to trade off data abstraction and encapsulation against implementation specific knowledge about a component’s internal timing behavior, resource usage, interaction and access patterns. These non-functional aspects of a component are crucial for the predictable behavior of real-time and fault-tolerance mechanisms. However, in contrast to the various mechanisms describing a component’s functional interface (Interface Definition Languages, Class/Method specifications), there is no general means

  • This tutorial is designed to show the user how to use ArcGIS software and the Districting extension to prepare and submit a plan for the Competition. Please refer to the document “FINAL Rules of the Competition” for details and rules about this project including the rules and procedures of the competition. This tutorial, which also serves as a manual, provides instructions on how to use many of the tools, functions, and options available in ArcGIS and the Districting extension that will help the user create proposed plans for this project. However, because the tutorial was written in a relatively limited timeframe many functions and options of the software that may also be useful are not covered. Persons with more experience with GIS software in general and with ArcGIS in particular may be able to more easily learn and use these additional functions. Please follow the tutorial carefully as missed steps or incorrect specifications or actions can cause errors and much frustration. Please expect that it will take several practices and some hours of work to become comfortably efficient with the software. The software is the product of ESRI and may not always work as expected or desired. The authors of this document are only responsible for the tutorial and the two tools that were created to assist the competition – the Compactness Tool and the Fragmentation Tool.
