They recognize the concept of crosscutting concerns, and know that they have had problems with the implementation of such concerns in the past. But there are many questions about how to adopt AOP into the development process.
Common questions include:
Can I use aspects in my existing code?
What kinds of benefits can I expect to get from using aspects?
How do I find aspects in my programs?
How steep is the learning curve for AOP?
What are the risks of using this new technology?
This chapter addresses these questions in the context of AspectJ: a general-purpose aspect-oriented extension to Java. A series of abridged examples illustrate the kinds of aspects programmers may want to implement using AspectJ and the benefits associated with doing so. Readers who would like to understand the examples in more detail, or who want to learn how to program examples like these, can find more complete examples and supporting material linked from the AspectJ web site ( http://eclipse.org/aspectj ).
A significant risk in adopting any new technology is going too far too fast. Concern about this risk causes many organizations to be conservative about adopting new technology. I haven’t been able to read it (dunno if its in print yet, and besides - everything takes a while to get to South Africa). I did however read the first chapter, as it is available to the public. In this chapter the author writes about different views on IT security - hackers, crackers, script kiddies and everything in between. I had some thoughts about this and decided that it was a good starting point for this document. I want to simplify the issue - let us forget motives at the moment, and simply look at the different characters in this play. To do this we will look at a real world analogy. Let us assume the ultimate goal is breaking into a safe (the safe is a database, a password file, confidential records or whatever).
The safe is located inside of a physical building (the computer that hosts the data). The building is located inside of a town (the computer is connected to a network). There is a path/highway leading to the town and the path connects the town to other towns and/or cities. (read Internet/Intranet). We’ll dissect that sentence to reveal that it’s not just a quick marketing trick, but a real mission statement. Freely available. This is easy to see, since the code is GPL, plus, it’s mostly shell and perl scripts, which is inherently open source. Community supported. This is very important now that the project is sponsored by an IT company. What it means is that it’s not that useful to have a freely available clustering solution if it’s not properly documented and easy to use.
