  • An Introduction to Programming with C# Threads
  • This paper provides an introduction to writing concurrent programs with “threads”. A threads facility allows you to write programs with multiple simultaneous points of execution, synchronizing through shared memory. The paper describes the basic thread and synchronization primitives, then for each primitive provides a tutorial on how to use it. The tutorial sections provide advice on the best ways to use the primitives, give warnings about what can go wrong and offer hints about how to avoid these pitfalls. The paper is aimed at experienced programmers who want to acquire practical expertise in writing concurrent programs. The programming language used is C#, but most of the tutorial applies equally well to other languages with thread support, such as Java. Almost every modern operating system or programming environment provides support for concurrent programming. The most popular mechanism for this is some provision for allowing multiple lightweight “threads” within a single address space, used from within a single program. Programming with threads introduces new difficulties even for experienced programmers. Concurrent programming has techniques and pitfalls that do not occur in sequential programming.   • AutoCAD is the world's most popular computer-aided drafting software product for the personal computer available in both DOS and windows by Autodesk, Inc. Anything that can be drawn on a drawing board can be drawn by AutoCAD. AutoCAD is an interactive drawing system designed to permit a user to construct or edit a drawing on a graphics display screen. It is similar to other word-processing programs except that in this case the thing being processed is a drawing. Each drawing is stored on a disk file, and AutoCAD is only able to edit one drawing at a time. An AutoCAD drawing is made up of entities. All the objects in the drawing space are considered entities such as lines, arcs, circles, text, and so on or blocks (which are groups of entities). The entities are defined geometrically in terms of the normal Cartesian coordinate system (right-handed system with positive X-axis to the right, positive Y-axis up the screen and positive Z-axis coming out of the screen towards the user). For example, lines are defined by their end- point coordinates (x, y and z), while circles are defined by their center coordinates and radius. Each entity also has certain attributes associated with it, such as line style, text font or color. AutoCAD organizes information in different layers like other programs like Photoshop and Illustrator. This means that any drawing entity can be assigned to any layer of the drawing.   • An important concern is that posting personal information on social websites such as Facebook, MySpace and Bebo is putting children at risk of abuse. Our survey of children at Key Stages 3 and 4 shows that a substantial minority (42%) of children regularly interact socially online with people they have not met face to face. This does not, of itself, indicate that children are naive or engaging in behaviour that puts them at significant risk. Rather, it shows that online interaction forms a different, though overlapping, social space to that of face-to-face friendships, involving friends of friends and people encountered in the online world, for example, through multiplayer games. Schools can have a role in educating children to use the new internet safely and responsibly. Teachers can help children to appreciate when they cross the line from normal and acceptable Web 2.0 activity, which may include posting some personal details online, to abnormal and risky behaviour. Currently, most children are prevented from engaging in any social activity on the web at school. While this may remove the immediate danger to children and protect the school or local authority against lawsuits, it may also store up further problems for society at large. Now that most children have home access, safe behaviours are essential, but a strongly protected online environment at school may not provide the opportunity to learn these. Online bullying, or ‘cyberbullying’, can be an upsetting experience and a recent phenomenon is the posting of hurtful images and videos on the web.

  • Cyberinfrastructure 1 and e-Science 1 are conventionally presented in terms of Grid technologies 2 3 that support remote access to computational science resources (such as supercomputers), distributed data management, networked instruments and similar technologies. Web Services are a key technology for realizing this vision 4 5. In contrast to these heavyweight approaches, however, many important innovations in network programming are emerging outside the (by now) traditional Web Services framework and are collectively known as Web 2.0 6. As we discuss in this chapter, these developments need to be tracked and incorporated into the e-Science vision. This chapter reviews some of the core Web 2.0 concepts by considering their impact on e-Science activities. For a related perspective on these issues, see 7. Web 2.0 is not a specific set of technologies and is best characterized as a movement towards network programming for everyone. The blurred distinction between a Web application and a Web tool (such as Google’s My Maps and Yahoo’s Pipes applications) means that even non-programmers can make sophisticated custom Web applications. In contrast to Web 2.0, the Enterprise-centric view of Web technologies holds that Web development is the domain of highly trained programmers working in very sophisticated development environments with complicated service interface and message specifications. Enterprise technologies are characterized by various Web software vendor efforts from Microsoft, Oracle, IBM, Sun, HP, and others.
