Friend or Foe? Web 2.0 in Technical CommunicationThe rise of Web 2.0 technology provides a platform for user-generated content.Publishing is no longer restricted to a few technical writers—any user can now contribute information. But the information coming from users tends to be highly specific, whereas technical documentation is comprehensive but less specific. The two types of information can coexist and improve the overall user experience. User-generated content also offers an opportunity for technical writers to participate as “curators”—by evaluating and organizing the information provided by end users.
Technical writers are accustomed to being the gatekeepers for product information. They carefully organize product documentation, online help, and other user assistance for their readers. Compare this to the chaos of the Web, where content is splattered across blogs, forums, wikis, and the like with little or no organizational scheme.
And yet, readers are turning to the chaos of the Web for information rather than reading the online help. They begin with a Google search and work through the results until they find something relevant.
User-generated content and technical documentation can be complementary rather than competitive. In this white paper, we explore the implications of user-generated content and discuss how technical writers can integrate this content into their overall strategy.

Web 2.0 in Technical CommunicationYour First Cup of Web 2.0 - A Quick Look at jQuery, Spring MVC, and XStream/JettisonThat's the first thing that popped into my head after learning about jQuery earlier this year. jQuery is a powerful yet unobtrusive JavaScript library with a lousy name. It's concise, very readable syntax has me exciting about writing JavaScript again. It's unobtrusiveness makes it easy to add rich behavior—such as background form submissions—to web applications with very little modification of existing code. Being unobtrusive is particularly important when you are working with a large code base, or where extensive refactoring just isn't going to get funding. My boss is not going to give me 4 weeks to go back and add some visual goodness to an existing site. But I might get 4 hours, and that's where jQuery can help.
As a simple example, imagine an automobile search function that returns results based on a vehicle Model. Enter text into the field, click submit, and the results are displayed. The JSP might look like:
After the user enters a name and clicks submit, the entire screen turns white while the page refreshes and then the results are displayed. This is not a good user experience. Now, let's use jQuery to improve that experience by refreshing only the part of the page that actually needs to change. The modifications made to the existing page are:
1. Split the search form and search results into 2 separate JSPs so the results can be displayed separately, without having to re-render the search form.
2. Add a placeholder DIV on the search form JSP to hold the searchTeaching Programming with Python and PyGameWhile we are enormously pleased with Python as a programming language for introductory classes, we did note a few issues which were awkward or confusing to Intro students. We want to make it clear in discussing these issues that we are only speaking from the point of view of novice programmers. Experienced programmers might well have very different views.
First, console input presents a problem: input() is not appropriate for strings and raw_input() either requires dealing with types and typecasting or puts us back in the realm of magic. In our experience getting input is one of the largest sources of errors for Python beginners. This has lead to our writing a simple input function which returns an integer, float or string, depending on the input string. (See example on http://tech.canterburyschool.org/pycon/) This function handles our students' needs but does have the disadvantage of not being part of the language “out of the box”.
A second and related issue for novices is the way Python handles types. In contrast to the rigid insistence upon type compatibility found in C++ and Java, Python seems less predictable to the beginner. Type compatibility is not needed for assignment, is needed logically, but not syntactically, for the comparison and equality operators, and is required for the + operator. Confusion about this behavior is probably the second most common source of errors for inexperienced programmers.
Finally, in common with C++ and Java, Python has different operators for assignment and equality, even though its syntax enforces correct usage. The method delivered by the Ultimate Crack is similar to that of the Time Crack or 2099 Crack; however, unlike the 2009 activation workaround, the Ultimate Crack will only work with Windows Vista Ultimate edition. With the consumer availability of Vista just five days away, Microsoft has still to deliver on a former promise to tackle the 2099 Crack. At the start of 2007, the Windows Genuine Advantage team revealed that an update to the WGA toll is under development and that it will address the operating systems activated via the 2099 Crack. The Ultim
ate Crack is a combination of a download and user hack. It involves modifying the pkeyconfig.xrm-ms and tokens.dat files. Following a successful bypass of the Vista Ultimate activation process, the operating system will remain active for 180 days. Coincidentally enough, 180 days is the time period that copies of Windows Vista activated via a KMS server deliver before having to contact the Key Management Service (KMS) server and reactivate. Additionally, there are reports that activating Windows Vista Ultimate edition via the Ultimate Crack will kill Media Center. The explanation is that, due to the changes applied to the tokens.dat file that is related to the version of Vista in use, Vista Ultimate is actually regressed in the activation circumvention process to Vista Enterprise. It is used for downloading and mirroring ftp-servers, but it also makes a good way for downloading PCLinuxOS images! The same as BitTorrent , Rsync also automatically checks and corrects any errors it finds. Unlike BitTorrent it does not share bandwidth. If you know how to use Rsync already, connect to and find out which ISO’s are available from “distro.ibiblio.org::texstar/pclinuxos/live-cd/english/preview/”. We have a web page with information about Getting PCLinuxOS via Rsync4 if you are new to using Rsync.

If you are using TeXtures on a Macintosh, you should find parts of this help useful, particularly, if you have updated your version of LaTeX to run LaTeX 2e (as opposed to LaTeX 2.09 which demands files should start with the obsolete command documentstyle ...).
Note to TeXtures and remote users: feel free to download local LaTeX packages/document classes (you will need to have LaTeX 2e for these) or local plain TeX files.

The simplest definition of RSS is an eXtensible Markup Language(XML) format that uses the Resource Description Framework (RDF) for representing information about resources on the World Wide Web. Similarly, Atom is another format based on XML technology.
You might see buttons like these:
There are a few types of feeds commonly found on web sites RSS 1.0, RSS 2.0 and Atom. There is quite a bit of debate about which type of xml format is better, but for the purpose of simplicity I will often be referring to feeds as RSS. RSS and Atom feeds are the structures that organize content which is being updated on a regular basis in order for others to retrieve it. This content could be articles, blog posts, photos, PDF documents, PowerPoint Presentations, audio files, video files, or other applications. If the content is the flesh of an orange then a feed would be its skin. The skin keeps the flesh in place so that it is easier to transport.
In 2003, RSS was more commonly associated with weblogs, known as blogs. Blogs and RSS feeds almost seemed to be an isolated cause and effect. Where there was a blog, you would find an RSS feed.
As this visualization shows, RSS feeds can more recently be seen being used for many different purposes. Bloggers created a different type of media, by adding audio and video files as the primary contentFord Focus Supercharger System Installation InstructionsBefore starting, be sure the vehicle has 91 or better octane fuel in it. DO NOT try to run the vehicle at full throttle at sea level altitude with a supercharger unless the fuel tank is filled with good 91-octane fuel. Failure to heed this warning can result in severe engine damage. Special Note: If you do not have a factory workshop manual, buy one now! It is good to have for any repairs now and in the future.
The factory manual is available from Helm Publications, 800-782-4356. Tools Needed: 8, 10, 11 (7/16”), 12, 13 (1/2”), 14 (9/16”), 15, 17, sockets and wrenches, a 5mm Allen wrench, Phillips and straight blade screwdrivers, and a telescoping magnet. You will also need a #30 Torx bit to remove the throttle body from the stock intake manifold. Most of these tools are available at your local hardware or auto parts store. This conversion requires the proper compli- ment of automotive tools, as well as a solid knowledge of automotive technical and mechanical conditions. You should have suffi- cient experience with the vehicle type upon which the conversion is to be performed. Again, we suggest that you obtain a service manual for the vehicle.

A motorcycle with breathtaking acceleration, nimble handling, and world-class fit and finish. A machine so advanced it demanded a new performance category: Ultimate Sport. With Suzuki’s experience in building high-performance motorcycles, meeting the engine performance goals and building an excellent chassis wouldn’t be a problem. But to make this kind of performance seem effortless would be the ultimate challenge.
One of the engineers recalled seeing the incredible flight of a small Falcon indigenous to Japan called Hayabusa. The Hayabusa is not the biggest or strongest bird in Japan, but it has the amazing ability to slice through the air reaching speeds of over 186 mph, making normal flight seem effortless. The engineer realized he had discovered the key element to the design. Make the bike able to slice through the air like a Hayabusa and normal performance would be almost effortless. It would be the most aerodynamic Suzuki ever built and it would be called the Hayabusa.
