  • The fine Art of Commenting
  • “Commenting is a royal pain in the posterior” - “Comments are for weenies” - “I can understand my code quite well, thank you very much” - “Good code speaks for itself” - “No time for that, got to get that code out of the door”. Admit it, you have said some thing along these lines at least once during your coding career. Maybe you even now still are in this kind of frame of mind. Negative attitudes towards commenting may have several reasons: Programmer's hubris Lazyness No time left for documentation due to deadline constraints None of these is a good reason for not commenting source code properly. We will look at these arguments, discuss them and take a look at good commenting practice and its benefits. As SharpDevelop is intended to be an IDE for all languages supported by the .NET platform – and others, if support is available – this text will not discuss language specific commenting issues. Knowledge of all languages referred to is not necessary for the understanding of this paper. Programmer's Hubris A good programmer is always a programmer with something of a well developed ego. Nothing is impossible, everything is easy to understand. So much for theory. In practice, reality checks are in order from time to time. Do you understand all your code after not looking at it for, say, a year? Is legacy code left to you to maintain always obvious at first look, or even after a few weeks of scrutiny? Truth is, most of the time
  • How to Use Your Google API Key as Your Secret Weapon: Part Two
  • Unlike part one , the rest of this article series will outline fewer Google API applications, as it focuses on only one thing. By the time you finish reading it, you will know how to implement what in my humble opinion, is the best way to use certain Google API Applications to enhance your own site. This simple idea isn't new. It has been used by dozens, perhaps hundreds of sites. You may have even attempted to use this idea yourself, but gave up because of the amount of time involved, or how much it used to cost to attempt to put into practice ? it used to take weeks just to compile enough information to get started. Now, several Google API applications make this particular kind of major site improvement much faster and easier to carry out. You can now combine free tools that help you create an RSS feed about your site with the power of your free Google API key, to transform your site into an industry leader on your site's topic. You probably already knew that you can collect RSS feeds and have the content displayed on your site, and also create a feed of your site and its updates without spending any money. With your Google API key, you can now leverage the power of the RSS format in less time. What is an RSS feed, and why does your site need one? Briefly, its most common abbreviation is "Really Simple Syndication". The purpose of an RSS feed is to

  • JAVALAB – A Java Tutorial and Programming Laboratory System Paper
  • Distance learning has become the most popular way of lifelong learning, and it is widely applied not only to school’s courses but also to enterprise’s training projects. The performance objectives of learning a programming language include the following: let the learner familiar with the programming language and training for the abilities to correct syntax errors in source code; developing the skills to fix the bugs in a program by debugging tools; and improve the logic analysis and reasoning ability of problems solving. However, most of he programming skills are cultivated heavily rely on experiment practices, so learning by practicing, learning by debugging, and learning by samples are the most popular learning strategies for learning a programming course. Learners will incrementally develop their programming skills by repeatedly practicing the programming cycle of writing a program, compiling the program, debugging the program, and testing the program. In this paper, we propose a JAVALAB system which provides three types of learning activity, simulation, quiz-and-feedback, and on-line programming, to meet the needs of programming course. JAVALAB uses XML web service as a glue to integrate Java hands-on practices with distance learning. JAVALAB can support the scenery of learning by practicing, learning by debugging, and learning by samples. In JAVALAB, a learner can do hands-on practices as well as learning activities in asynchronous distance education system. JAVALAB allow a learner to write, compile, debug, and test his Java applet on the Web. The learner is encouraged to write his code snippet according to the programming guide,

  • PolyTrans for Maya PDF Tutorial
  • PolyTrans-for-Maya is a premiere plug-in system for Maya (Windows) that allows Maya to freely exchange complete 3D scene data with virtually any other 3D software package, such as 3DS MAX (via PolyTrans-for-Maya and Okino .bdf format), Lightwave, OpenFlight, Softimage-3D, Softimage-XSI, IGES 5.3, ACIS SAT, Autodesk Inventor, DirectX, DXF/DWG (with ACIS solids in DWG files), Parasolids, Pro/Engineer, QuickDraw-3D, Renderman RIB, Solid Edge, Solid Works, STEP, trueSpace and many, many others. PolyTrans-for-Maya has become one of Okino’s most popular, specialized plug-in converter systems since it adds a lot of new functionality to the Maya software package itself. It also forms a natural and well refined pipeline between Maya and 3DS MAX via the mirror twin ‘PolyTrans-for-Maya’ and ‘PolyTrans-for-3DSMAX’ native plug-in modules. PolyTrans-for-Maya breaks down all previous data translation barriers and truly makes Maya a universally open software package. In the tradition of all Okino 3D data translators, resulting translated files are ‘Render Ready’ meaning that they can be loaded and rendered in the destination program (Maya, Softimage- 3D/XSI, 3DS MAX, Lightwave, etc.) with little or no changes necessary. • IS Support for Web 2.0 Services – the Next Steps
  • The web is changing from being essentially a unidirectional publishing medium to one which supports multiparty content creation and collaboration – a change which provides both rich opportunities and challenges. The use of blogs, wikis, media-sharing services and other social software has been shown to empower both staff and students and to create exciting new learning opportunities. Examples include the use of blogs to allow students to share and reflect on learning, and to allow researchers to share knowledge, exchange ideas and easily publish work. Wikis provide a collaborative, easy to use content authoring tool for students, researchers and support staff. Social bookmarking services have introduced user defined tags, facilitating shared resource identification, while virtual worlds like Second Life have introduced new possibilities for social networking among distance students, and unique opportunities for the development of innovative pedagogies. We have now had two reports on Web 2.0 in the University: an initial report which proposed one way forward, and a second report following an extensive consultation effort, which improved our understanding of user concerns in this area, as well as raising the profile of Web 2.0 in the user community. Our extensive preparatory work in this area is recognised as unique in a JISC report on Web 2.0 in learning and teaching. Now the IS Strategic Management Group has decided that Information Services should start implementing what’s been discussed. This paper makes the vision of what we’re trying to achieve more explicit, and outlines necessary steps towards its realization. Download pdf IS
