  • What It’s All About: Visual Basic Express Takes a Bow
  • Visual Basic Express is the only popular computer programming language available today. By popular, I mean “for the people” — novices, small-business people, amateurs — anyone other than professional programmers. VB Express is the language for the rest of us. There are far more small-business people, beginners, and enthusiasts than there are professionals, just as amateur cooks outnumber professional chefs. That’s why VB Express’s predecessor, Visual Basic, was for a decade the world’s most popular computer language by a wide margin. Small-business people need an efficient, understandable programming language to write quick utilities to solve problems unique to their work. A surfboard maker may often need to calculate polyester catalyst ratios, or dad might want to write up a quick history quiz to help with Laura’s homework. A hobbyist may enjoy creating a coin collection management program. Whatever your personal needs, knowing how to program a computer — and thus how to perfectly customize its behavior — is a useful and often enjoyable skill. • Virtools Tutorial: Let’s Get Physical
  • Virtools provides the amazing ability to endow your worlds with a reasonably good simulation of real world physics with the addition of a few building blocks. As we will see, this system becomes a bit of a black box, but I hope you’ll find that it works reasonably well in many circumstances. The Physicalize BB Let’s begin with the Virtools Getting Started Physics demo. C:Program FilesVirtoolsVirtools Dev 3.5DocumentationPhysicsPhysics DatabaseGettingStarted.cmo. To begin experimenting with physics, all you need to do is add the Physics -> Creation -> Physicalize BB to the two main elements in the scene. In this case the floor and the box. Be sure to set IC on anything you physicalize before playing the scene. Gravity One thing that happens automatically in with the Physics system is that you get Gravity. If you play the scene at this point, you’ll notice that everything that you physicalized falls out of the frame. This introduces us to the first major parameter in the Physics BB: “Fixed” Download Virtools Tutorial: Let’s Get Physical

  • Protecting Microsoft Exchange
  • Though the technological reasons to protect Exchange systems may be self evident, there are quantifiable fiscal reasons to protect these messaging systems as well. The dollar value of any given data-set may be difficult to calculate, but the cost-savings of avoiding even a single Exchange outage can easily be determined. In most organizations, there are at the very least one or two subsets of end-users who cannot continue to work without these systems functioning. Even if these groups might not regularly produce revenue in the form of direct sales or billable engagements, salaries, benefits and fixed costs still accrue during an outage. Therefore, the loss of the messaging systems for even a few hours could easily result in thousands of dollars in budget outlay without recouping a single dollar in productivity. For revenue-generating groups, the cost of this downtime is even more easily quantifiable. Avoiding even one of these outages is not only a good idea for the IT department, but for the CFO's office as well. Complete protection of Exchange requires a lot more than management of on-site and off-site tape backups. While traditional tape backup is an excellent tool for long-term archiving, true recovery for the sake of business continuity requires real-time data protection which enables disaster recovery and high availability. Having a solution that is cost-effective, hardware independent and scalable is something every IT manager should seriously consider. This whitepaper is meant to provide a brief technical overview of Microsoft® Exchange Server 2000 and 2003 survivability requirements as well as present

  • Bringing Security to Macromedia Director
  • E-commerce, pay-per-use online services, user-authentication and tracking for e-learning, online gaming, contests... What do all of these applications have in common? The need for secure transfer of encrypted data between client workstations and server applications. According to a study by Gartner Consulting, the growing concern for Internet security parallels the evolution of e-business. In the earliest days of Internet development, the emphasis was on distributing content over the web and making it available to anyone. Now, as the Internet matures, clients are more concerned with ensuring that their assets, both monetary and intellectual, are protected from those who may commit fraud or abuse them. This is why more and more developers have been looking for security solutions. The Technological Challenge Secure HTTP, or Hypertext Transfer Protocol with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), is the current standard for transmitting secure information over the Internet. The SSL security protocol, developed by Netscape® Communications® Corporation, provides data encryption, server authentication, message integrity, and optional client authentication for a TCP/IP connection. It uses public key cryptography, a technique that uses a pair of asymmetric keys for encryption and decryption. Data is encrypted using a public key, but can only be decrypted using a private key. URLs that use Secure HTTP begin with https://. Out of the box, Director®-based applications can only offer Secure HTTP connections through Shockwave® within a browser. There is no way to ensure secure communications from a projector. Likewise, there is no efficient way to debug Secure HTTP communications in Director’s authoring environment. Download pdf Bringing
