  • A Low-cost Attack on a Microsoft CAPTCHA
  • CAPTCHA is now almost a standard security technology. The most widely used CAPTCHAs rely on the sophisticated distortion of text images rendering them unrecognisable to the state of the art of pattern recognition techniques, and these text-based schemes have found widespread applications in commercial websites. The state of the art of CAPTCHA design suggests that such text-based schemes should rely on segmentation resistance to provide security guarantee, as individual character recognition after segmentation can be solved with a high success rate by standard methods such as neural networks. In this paper, we analyse the security of a text-based CAPTCHA designed by Microsoft and deployed for years at many of their online services including Hotmail, MSN and Windows Live. This scheme was designed to be segmentation-resistant, and it has been well studied and tuned by its designers over the years. However, our simple attack has achieved a segmentation success rate of higher than 90% against this scheme. It took on average80 ms for the attack to completely segment a challenge on a desktop computer with a 1.86 GHz Intel Core 2 CPU and 2 GB RAM. As a result, we estimate that this Microsoft scheme can be broken with an overall (segmentation and then recognition) success rate of more than 60%. On the contrary, its design goal was that "automatic scripts should not be more successful than 1 in 10,000" attempts (i.e. a success rate of 0.01%). For the first time, we show that a CAPTCHA that is carefully designed to be

  • Access Your openSUSE Desktop from Anywhere Using FreeNX PDF
  • How to install and use FreeNX in openSUSE 10.2 FreeNX is the free version of NoMachine’s NX Server, which makes fast, secure, remote X11 connections to enable users to access remote Linux and Unix desktop sessions over a data link such as LAN or Internet. The server has been developed in such way that it’s fast enough even over a low bandwidth and high latency connection such as a dial-up link. This is one of the main reasons I will choose FreeNX over a common VNC program. FreeNX can be also set up as a proxy, so it will tunnel Remote Desktop Protocols and remote Virtual Network Computing sessions, giving them some of the same speed improvements. FreeNX uses high optimized techniques to compress the X11 data, minimizing the amount of data that needs to be transferred, providing a responsive and real-time remote desktop experience. • Creating a Paperspace Template
  • Since my first days with DesignCad, a paperspace template was not available until I created one and imported the file into my existing drawing file, filling in the necessary details into the titleblock before printing. Frankly, it was a pain until DesignCad came out with paperspace templates. To the new user, the existing templates are quite and more than suitable and may indeed be suitable for some experienced users and customers alike, but from time to time or as is required, an up to date template is required to: 1. look professional, 2. convey the information required by a given standard i.e. local council or Patents Office. 3. Your drawing standards and template requirements have changed. My own business has a drawing template log, where any changes to templates are noted and dated. Why? For quality reasons and if my company is audited, I can show the auditor the trail of changes, if asked. To the new user, creating templates can be a daunting task, even to a reasonably experienced user, so with this tutorial, I will endeavour to guide you through the task. Paperspace templates are all based on a standard, being ISO, DIN, JIS, ANSI to name but some. Most, if not all are based on the ISO Standard. Download pdf Creating a Paperspace Template

  • Compatibility With Visual BASIC
  • The language structures in OpenOffice.org BASIC are very similar to those used in Visual BASIC. The methods used for accessing the underlying documents, however, are vastly different and have essentially no compatibility with each other. Entire books have been written dealing with the differences between Visual BASIC 6 (VB6), Visual BASIC.NET (VB.NET), and Visual BASIC for Applications (VBA). This chapter is only an overview of issues concerning compatibility between the OpenOffice.org BASIC and Visual BASIC. I use VBA, VB6 and VB.NET to refer to the specific versions and VB to generically refer to either or both versions. To convert VB macros that do not access the underlying documents, my first step is to bring them into OOo and fix the syntax errors. The second step is to remove the errors introduced due to differences in behavior. Thorough testing is required to avoid subtle problems. Significant code changes are required to convert the sections that access the underlying document structures. VBA is the variant used by Microsoft Office. VB.NET was released after VBA so it is possible that a later version of VBA will follow in the direction of VB.NET. Some of the keywords supported by OOo BASIC and deprecated when moving from VB6 and VBA to VB.NET... Download pdf Compatibility With Visual BASIC
  • Web 2.0 for Content for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education
  • This report is the result of a study into the use of Web 2.0 technologies for content creation for learning and teaching in Higher Education, funded by the JISC, and carried out between March and May 2007. It draws on existing studies, interviews with staff at universities who have implemented Web 2.0 technologies for learning and teaching, and a week-long web based seminar (webinar) with expert contributions, both from speakers and the audience. The report builds on the briefing documents that were written especially for the webinar and the results of the webinar discussions, many of which can be found in the Moodle site that was used to support the conference. Web 2.0 will affect how universities go about the business of education, from learning, teaching and assessment, through contact with school communities, widening participation, interfacing with industry, and maintaining contact with alumni. However, it would be a mistake to consider Web 2.0 as the sole driver of these changes; in reality Web 2.0 is just one part of the Higher Education (HE) ecosystem. Other drivers include, for example, pressures to greater efficiency, changes in student population, and ongoing emphasis on better learning and teaching methods. Nonetheless, Web 2.0 is, in our view, a technology with profound potential for inducing change in the HE sector. In this, the possible realms of learning to be opened up by the catalytic effects of Web 2.0 technologies are attractive, allowing greater student independence and autonomy, greater collaboration, and increased pedagogic efficiency. This study has focussed on
  • Engaging the YouTube Google-Eyed Generation: Strategies for Using Web 2.0 in Teaching and Learning
  • YouTube, Podcasting, Blogs, Wikis and RSS are buzz words currently associated with the term Web 2.0 and represent a shifting pedagogical paradigm for the use of a new set of tools within education. The implication here is a possible shift from the basic archetypical vehicles used for (e)learning today (lecture notes, printed material, PowerPoint, websites, animation) towards a ubiquitous user-centric, user-content generated and user- guided experience. It is not sufficient to use online learning and teaching technologies simply for the delivery of content to students. A new “Learning Ecology” is present where these Web 2.0 technologies can be explored for collaborative and (co)creative purposes as well as for the critical assessment, evaluation and personalization of information. Web 2.0 technologies provide educators with many possibilities for engaging students in desirable practices such as collaborative content creation, peer assessment and motivation of students through innovative use of media. These can be used in the development of authentic learning tasks and enhance the learning experience. However in order for a new learning tool, be it print, multimedia, blog, podcast or video, to be adopted, educators must be able to conceptualize the possibilities for use within a concrete framework. This paper outlines some possible strategies for educators to incorporate the use of some of these Web 2.0 technologies into the student learning experience. Why should the notion of incorporating Web 2.0 and interacting with for example socially distributed and user-created videos (e.g. from www.youtube.com) be important within education? In what ways has the rapid development of
