  • DNA: variations on a theme in Maya
  • In this tutorial, we’ll explore different methods for modeling, rigging, and animating DNA. There are many ways to approach this macromolecule in Maya and each has its merits depending on what the model will be used for in your scene. We’ll start with a simple ‘plank’ DNA model that is roughly based on what is known about the molecule’s proportions, and then look at different ways to deform it. Next we’ll import a PDB coordinate set for B-DNA and experiment with different representations using particles. These first two methods assume that the helix does not need to unwind and melt. Finally, we’ll go over a programmatic approach to building DNA using PDB data for a single base pair – this method will allow us to twist and unzip the double helix. Modeling plank DNA In this first exercise, we’ll create a stand-in model for B-DNA that could be useful in schematic animations where atomic resolution is not required and melting of the double helix is not necessary. Here’s a quick overview of the process: 1) model a base pair with polygons, 2) animate its rotation and elevation to use the ‘animated snapshot’ tool, 3) create 2 NURBS curves slightly offset from the base pair, 4) use the ‘animated sweep’ tool to extrude those circles and create the backbone and finally 5) ‘duplicate special’ to create additional helical turns to the model prior to rigging. Although we’ve reviewed B-DNA’s characteristics above, let’s also have a PDB-derived cartoon model in our scene to make sure

  • Getting Started with Freeway Shop in a Box
  • Of the many innovations the Internet has brought us, one of the most visible is online shopping. The advantages for merchants are clear lower overheads in both staff and shop space, provision of greater convenience for their customers, 24/7 and international availability of the store, and the ability to compete on a far more level playing field with larger companies. The spread of internet shopping sites is a testament to all of these. However, the implementation of an online store has often been difficult, especially for the individual user. A catalogue needs to be presented allowing customers to select products to buy, these product choices must be tracked (usually in the form of the common shopping cart), and all-importantly, a secure way of processing the customer’s payment details is vital. As is often the case, a demand for services rapidly begets solutions, and there are now numerous companies that offer these services for integration into a website. PayPal, Verisign, and Authorize.Net are well- known companies who provide secure credit card processing services. Many companies who provide shopping carts link with these (and other) credit card processors. One of the better of the shopping carts is Mal’s e-commerce (http://www.mals-e.com) which provides two packages: a free service offering integration with PayPal, NoChex and Paymate, and a premium service offering integration with VeriSign, Authorize.Net and a wide variety of other credit card processors. And now, using the power of Freeway’s Actions technology, you can take advantage of Mal’s shopping cart to quickly create your own online store.

  • Making a quick water material in 3ds Max
  • In this tutorial I will show how to make a quick water material in 3d Max. Keep in mind there’s no special plugins used, just 3d Max materials, which will render much quicker. Open up the materials window. Pick a new material and change the diffuse color to a dark brown, so we can make some dirty water. Also change the “Specular” value to 90, and the “Glossiness” to 70. Go down to Maps - bump change the value to 30, hit none and choose noise material. Change the X and Y tiling value to 2, also choose fractal for “Noise Type”. Now lets do the reflections. Change the reflection value to 30, hit none and choose Reflect/Refract material. The default Size value of a 100 works well and quick during render time, but if you want to see more details just increase the value; I’m going to increase it to 200. Change the Blur Offset value to .01, this will slightly blur the reflections. Download pdf Making a quick water material in 3ds Max

  • Nortel Secure Network Access and Microsoft Network Access Protection Integration
  • With the ever-increasing need for enterprises to provide endpoint security and policy compliance, Network Access Control (NAC) solutions abound. However, confusion around industry standards, the multitude of NAC vendors and the complexity of the solutions has led to a relatively slow industry-wide NAC adoption rate. In order to increase flexibility, simplicity and comprehensive cross-platform device support, Nortel has worked with Microsoft to provide a joint NAC solution. Interoperability features and benefits Nortel and Microsoft have worked together to integrate the Nortel Secure Network Access (SNA) solution with Microsoft Network Access Protection (NAP). This integration lets customers deploy a NAC solution today, based on Nortel SNA, while allowing them to add Microsoft’s solution at a later date. Microsoft NAP is available with Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista and Windows XP SP3. The key features and benefits of the joint solution include: Cross-platform device support Nortel SNA provides agent technology that runs on both Windows and non-Windows operating systems. NAP's focus on Windows Vista and XP SP3 support, combined with SNA’s extensibility to older Windows versions as well as Mac OS X and Linux, provides a comprehensive solution for enterprises with heterogeneous environments. In addition, SNA integrates IP phones, printers and other non-interactive devices. Download pdf Nortel Secure Network Access and Microsoft Network Access Protection Integration

  • The Interplay of Real Life and Facebook in Defining Interpersonal Romantic Relationships
  • Electronic communication has been redefining the ways in which people communicate with each other since its wide-spread introduction in the 1990’s. E-mail, instant messaging, internet forums, and social networking have added entirely new meanings to interpersonal interaction and community. Through time, internet based communication has developed its own set of non-verbal communication (emoticons, select usage of certain punctuation, chat speak, etc.) Like all other communication technologies, it has also been adapted into everyday life and everyday communication (by those that have access of course). It is the interplay between internet and real life communication and its subsequent effect on interpersonal relationships that is the focus of this research proposal. Popular social networking websites such as Facebook have bundled many of the internet communication standards such as e-mail, forums, and instant messaging into one resource. Then these communication standards are linked together through a Web 2.0 standard called “social networking.” Social networking allows users to link and communicate with each other through a myriad of ways… and it is always at the user’s discretion. Research has already been done on who uses Facebook, why they do, and how much time they spend on it (Ellison, Steinfield, & Lampe, 2007). There has also been introductory research done on the benefits of social networking through Facebook (Stern & Taylor, 2007) and the electronic presenting and “looking glass” self through Facebook (Walther 2008). The academic world knows what Facebook is and why it’s used. However, in the last two years, Facebook usage has become a staple
