Dwarf's Guide to Debian GNU/LinuxThe major difference between the Debian distribution and other Linux distributions that are currently available is its open development model. This is not, however, the only difference between Debian and the other distributions.
The second, equally important difference, is Debian’s strict adherence to the “Free Software” ideal. It is quite impressive, when you think about it, that this distribution is composed of freely redistributable software, complete with source code. Now, most other distributions also supply source code and these same programs, but they will also put packages into their distributions that can not be redistributed under certain conditions, without any concern for the legal problems that they deliver to their customer. Users of the Debian distribution can be assured that what they find in that distribution will have no constraints on the free distribution and modification of that software, leaving them free to build “value added” systems from this Distribution without fear that they will find themselves in court for misuse of someone else’s intellectual property.
Debian provides areas within the archives for packages that do not meet these rigid standards, but are desired by the Debian community. Because of its free software status, the Debian packaging system can be used to package software that does not meet its own standards for free distribution.
Packages that are not freely distributable are found in the non-free section of the distribution. Fedora Core comes as a series of three ISO files, each about 650 MB in size. After downloading and verifying the files, you'll want to put them onto CDs. Most every version of Windows comes with CD-burning software, so I won't belabor that process here. It's not quite as straightforward on a Linux box, though, so I'll provide explicit details for creating CDs with Linux.
Once you've got your three CDs, it's time to install. The first CD is bootable, so, assuming that your machine can boot from a CD, you just stick it in and restart the machine. A wizard starts, first offering to check the CDs for errors, and then guiding you through about 16 screens that allow you to configure your machine and set up preferences. Most of these screens can be navigated simply by clicking "Next", as the wizard will detect and display the appropriate choice for you.
After completing the wizard, the installation starts, and you'll be prompted to insert CD #2 and #3 when necessary. Once all the files have been transferred and the system has been installed, the machine will restart and you'll spend a few more minutes making a few last tweaks and choosing settings. Upon completion, you've got a Linux box ready to go.

Be careful that the new versions (Apache 2 and tomcat 4) needs some particular changes. I will try to integrate them, but for now, check the Chapter 5 at the end of this document ! Besides, consider using Tomcat stand-alone : if it is fast enough, don't loose your time until the connector configuration is more stable. Enventually consider RESIN ($500) [http://www.caucho.com/] or Orion ($1500) [http://www.orionserver.com/], whish are much cheaper than the well known BEA WebLogic or IBM WebServer.
The 4.0.4 version of Tomcat is very new. I tested it on Windows but still not on Linux. Besides, which WARP Con- nector version to use is not clear. The main problem is to make Apache and TomCat work together. This is done through the WebApp connector, which installation is not trivial.
This can be done with the APJ connector (mod_jk or mod_fk2) too (and Coyote ?). But we will not be treat this here. It is a more "traditional" solution. I didn't find a lot of information which compared the APJ and WARP con- nectors, but from the little I have read, the WARP one seemed the best.
