The Java 2D™ API enhances the graphics, text, and imaging capabilities of the Abstract Windowing Toolkit (AWT), enabling the development of richer user interfaces and new types of Java™ applications. Along with these richer graphics, font, and image APIs, the Java 2D API supports enhanced color definition and composition, hit detection on arbitrary geometric shapes and text, and a uniform rendering model for printers and display devices. The Java 2D API also enables the creation of advanced graphics libraries, such as CAD-CAM libraries and graphics or imaging special effects libraries, as well as the creation of image and graphic file read/write filters.

The term CAD is an abbreviation of Computer Aided Design and refers to the use of a wide range of computer-based tools used by engineers, architects and other design specialists. Computer Aided Design involves both software applications, ranging from 2-dimensional vector-based drafting tools through to highly sophisticated 3D modelling systems, and specialist hardware tools including ‘wide-format’ print systems.

VTBook is a PC-Card graphics card for notebook computers: it connects through a CardBus compatible PC-Card slot. The goal of Village Tronic while designing VTBook was to create a small, affordable, reliable device that would empower notebook users by allowing them to connect big digital displays to their computers, as they were desktop systems.
