  • Biological Safety Manual
  • This manual has been prepared as an update to the 1976 Minimum Safety Guidelines for Biological Research at Yale, and the 1979 Yale University Biological Safety Manual. As with the previous manuals, we have provided a core set of biosafety practices and procedures for the safe handling of known biohazards and potentially infectious materials. Relevant sections from the previous manuals have been maintained and updated where necessary. The manual focuses on Biosafety Levels 1 and 2, as over 99% of Yale laboratories fall within these designations. A separate manual is available for researchers working in Biosafety Level 3 research laboratories. No work with Biosafety Level 4 agents may be conducted at Yale University. The Yale Office of Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Health and Safety Section (OHS) Biosafety Program and the requirements for Yale researchers are outlined in the manual. Registration and training information are provided along with details on work practices, safety equipment and facility design. It is the responsibility of the Principal Investigator or Supervisor to ensure that his/her laboratory is in compliance. That responsibility includes identification of the risk or hazards associated with their research and the application of the appropriate safety procedures. Please read the section on responsibilities for additional information. In the past, the University has also distributed copies of the Centers for Disease Control/National Institutes of Health Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories to all Yale research laboratories. The text has served as a functional biosafety manual for the University. This document and other pertinent biosafety training

  • The fine Art of Commenting
  • “Commenting is a royal pain in the posterior” - “Comments are for weenies” - “I can understand my code quite well, thank you very much” - “Good code speaks for itself” - “No time for that, got to get that code out of the door”. Admit it, you have said some thing along these lines at least once during your coding career. Maybe you even now still are in this kind of frame of mind. Negative attitudes towards commenting may have several reasons: Programmer's hubris Lazyness No time left for documentation due to deadline constraints None of these is a good reason for not commenting source code properly. We will look at these arguments, discuss them and take a look at good commenting practice and its benefits. As SharpDevelop is intended to be an IDE for all languages supported by the .NET platform – and others, if support is available – this text will not discuss language specific commenting issues. Knowledge of all languages referred to is not necessary for the understanding of this paper. Programmer's Hubris A good programmer is always a programmer with something of a well developed ego. Nothing is impossible, everything is easy to understand. So much for theory. In practice, reality checks are in order from time to time. Do you understand all your code after not looking at it for, say, a year? Is legacy code left to you to maintain always obvious at first look, or even after a few weeks of scrutiny? Truth is, most of the time

  • Implementing Mobile Web 2.0
  • This document outlines a chapter in the book Implementing Mobile Web 2.0 by Ajit Jaokar published by futuretext (Feb 2009). It is released separately as a stand-alone chapter. Here, we discuss the role of the next generation SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card, referred to as SCWS (Smart card web server) SIM within Mobile Web 2.0. To explain the background, this document includes other sections from the book so that it becomes as complete document in itself. Synopsis and key ideas The key ideas behind this chapter are: • Web 2.0 has already evolved to Cloud computing. • Inspite of the notion of a ‘Web only’ processing, the cloud needs a client (as is now apparent from the deployment of a browser like Chrome from Google). • For a mobile ecosystem, there are two possibilities for a Cloud client; The device or The SIM since both are at the edge of the network(for simplicity we discuss a cellular network only i.e. not Wimax, WiFi etc) • From a network Operator perspective, the SCWS SIM offers a possibility to be the client for the mobile cloud for reasons that we discuss in this chapter. • The SCWS SIM technology also offers the possibility of accessing mass market devices. Notes: 1) This chapter is written from a Telecom Operator perspective. There are other implementations of Mobile Web 2.0 which are non Operator specific 2) We use the term SCWS technology to refer to Smart Card Web Server technology and SCWS SIM as the next generation SIM card incorporating SCWS technology Web 2.0 and Mobile
  • Integrated communication in the Web 2.0 Age
  • How can I coordinate the content, timing and form of my marketing communication efforts so that they – while reflecting a consistent brand identity – generate the greatest possible impact at the lowest possible cost? Within the content of the “new,” rediscovered Internet, this question would appear to be less difficult to answer than ever. However, ever since the general hype over Web 2.0 broke out in the marketing community’s trade publications, marketing managers have been troubled by the realisation that they are losing control over their communication – and even over their brand itself – on the web. The question of whether or not (or how) to integrate the Internet and new communication technologies into the communications mix no longer presents the primary challenge. Instead, the real difficulty lies in successfully dealing with the emerging culture of participation in the midst of a rapidly diversifying media landscape. The discussion of the value of integrating communication measures goes back as far as the 1970s. Ever since then, the concept of integrated communication has been seen as a reaction to the general intensification of the communication environment (information overload, increasingly stiff communication competition, growing diversity of communication types). Nevertheless, in practice, it has become clear that successfully integrating the content, form and timing of communication measures and instruments is highly complicated. Integration efforts are hindered by departmental “blinders” and siloed thinking – both within the company and within partner agencies. Furthermore, insufficient definition of communication goals hampers the process. The frequent lack of
  • C# Solutions for a Face Detection and Recognition System pdf
  • Key issues on using a new programming language - C# - in implementation of a face detection and recognition (FDR) system are presented. Mainly the following aspects are detailed: how to acquire an image, broadcast a video stream, manipulate a database, and finally, the detection/recognition phase, all in relation with theirs possible C#/.NET solutions. Emphasis was placed on artificial neural network (ANN) methods for face detection/recognition along with C# object oriented implementation proposal. In June 2000, Microsoft announced both the .NET platform and a new programming language called C# [1–3]. .NET is a framework that covers all the layers of software development from the operating system up. It actually wraps the operating system, insulating software developed with .NET from most operating system specifics such as file handling and memory allocation. It provides a new application programming interface (API) to the services and APIs of classic Windows operating systems while bringing together a number of disparate technologies that emerged from Microsoft during the late 1990s. It provides the richest level of integration among presentation technologies, component technologies, and data technologies ever seen on a Microsoft platform. This includes COM+ component services, a commitment to XML and object-oriented design, support for new web services protocols such as SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI, etc. .NET framework components are depicted in Figure 1 The programming language of choice for .NET platform is C#. But C# is also an attractive language per se, aside from .NET. The language is powerful, productive, type safe, has a rich and clear
