  • Moscow ML implements Standard ML (SML), as defined in the 1997 Definition of Standard ML, including the SML Modules language and some extensions. Moreover, Moscow ML supports most required parts of the SML Basis Library. It supports separate compilation and the generation of stand-alone executables. This document explains how to use the Moscow ML system. A companion document, the Moscow ML Language Overview, summarizes Moscow ML syntax and the most common built-in functions [9]. Another companion document, the Moscow ML Library Documentation, describes in detail all Moscow ML library modules [10]. Get a copy of the Moscow ML system executables (see Section 20 for instructions) and unpack them in your home directory (under Unix) or in directory C: (under MS Windows and DOS).   • Changes in the way people are using the internet are a constant source of interest in the publishing industry. Events such as Rupert Murdoch buying mySpace for $US629m in July last year show how the industry is watching and investing in new media. The internet is a constantly evolving place. New ideas and new communities are springing up and disappearing at a rapid rate, changing the network as they go. Some ideas are more significant and lasting than others, with the potential to affect the way we live and work. The first big idea to gain widespread familiarity was email. From its beginnings in 1971, it has steadily grown to become today's fast, efficient and ubiquitous one-to-one communication. The next big step was the World Wide Web - web pages - which really kicked off in 1991 and brought to a peak the concept of one-to-many communication. Since the introduction of the web, internet growth has mushroomed; in Australia alone, more than 14 million people use it. The next big step, which is happening on the internet now, has been popularly called 'Web 2.0'. The term Web 2.0 has been criticised as a meaningless marketing buzzword, and it is difficult to find a common definition, but with millions of Google citations, it has clearly taken hold. Web 2.0 can be broadly characterised by one basic concept: many-to-many communication.   • The SAP System is equipped with a special lock mechanism that synchronizes access to data on the database. The purpose of the lock mechanism is to prevent two transactions from changing the same data on the database simultaneously. Implementation Considerations Locks are defined generically as “lock objects” in the Data Dictionary. A lock request is a specific instance of a lock object and locks a certain database object, such as a correction or a table entry. Lock entries are usually set and deleted automatically when user programs access a data object and release it again. Integration The SAP lock mechanism is closely related to the update mechanism in R/3 [Extern]. A description of handling lock objects is provided in the ABAP Dictionary Documentation under Lock Objects [Extern].   • After installing the T-Splines plugin, you need to tell Maya to use it. • On the menu, select Window -> Settings/Preferences -> Plug-in Manager. • Look for "TSplineShape" (it will be followed by .mll, .so, or .lib; this depends on your operating system). You may need to scroll down to find it. • Put a check in both the "loaded" and "auto load" boxes. This will load the plug-in and make sure it reloads every time you start Maya. After you load the plug-in, a "TSplines" menu should appear on the menu bar. Most of what you can do with the plug-in is accessed through this menu. The menu contains links to the T-Spline help pages, the forum, and to many of the operations that you can perform on T-Splines. Creating a Shelf To create a shelf with commonly used functions, choose "Create Shelf" from the T-Splines menu. If it's your first time creating the shelf, a new "TSplines" shelf will be added and will be filled with icons. If the shelf already exists, it will re-add any icons that may be missing. Even if you add your own icons to the shelf, you can safely "Create Shelf" again; it will not modify your existing icons.   • Serializing object in XML format in Eiffel.NET Applications
  • This document presents my work as part of course COSC 4080 during fall 2002, under the supervision of Professor Jonathan Ostroff. The initial purpose of the project was to write a reusable component to store Eiffel objects in XML format, and also to investigate a new product from Eiffel Software, namely Eiffel Envision. Eiffel Envision is a plug-in for Visual Studio.NET that facilitate the writing, debugging and testing of Eiffel code in Visual Studio.NET. Needless to say, the integration between Eiffel and the .NET Framework (hereinafter referred to as Eiffel.NET) is not just at the GUI level. Eiffel is now one of the few languages that are .NET compatible. This means that programmers can compile Eiffel code to run on the .NET Common Language Runtime (more on this issue in the next section). This document is written in the form of a tutorial, and it reflects, in a way, the learning curve that I was facing when working on the project. Although the final code for the XML Serialization application is fairly short, I have revised it and restructured it dozens of time; at every step along the way I have learned something new, and realized that the code I have written was wrong, or perhaps it wasn’t efficient.
