  • What Is Web 2.0 Design Patterns and Business Models for the Next Generation of Software
  • The bursting of the dot-com bubble in the fall of 2001 marked a turning point for the web. Many people concluded that the web was overhyped, when in fact bubbles and consequent shakeouts appear to be a common feature of all technological revolutions. Shakeouts typically mark the point at which an ascendant technology is ready to take its place at center stage. The pretenders are given the bum's rush, the real success stories show their strength, and there begins to be an understanding of what separates one from the other. The concept of "Web 2.0" began with a conference brainstorming session between O'Reilly and MediaLive International. Dale Dougherty, web pioneer and O'Reilly VP, noted that far from having "crashed", the web was more important than ever, with exciting new applications and sites popping up with surprising regularity. What's more, the companies that had survived the collapse seemed to have some things in common. Could it be that the dot-com collapse marked some kind of turning point for the web, such that a call to action such as "Web 2.0" might make sense? We agreed that it did, and so the Web 2.0 Conference was born. The list went on and on. But what was it that made us identify one application or approach as "Web 1.0" and another as "Web 2.0"? (The question is particularly urgent because the Web 2.0 meme has become so widespread that companies are now pasting it on as a marketing buzzword, with no real understanding of just
  • Customer Knowledge and Service Development, the Web 2.0 Role in Co-production
  • The peculiar nature of services requires a multidisciplinary approach to investigate on their impact in the economic growth, to define models, to identify terminology, to describe scenarios and user profiles. The integration of several disciplines is a key point for the improvement of the Service Science capacity to find solutions and answers for services, especially for studying and designing new ICT services, the fastest growing segment within the service sector. One of the main goals of this paper is to analyse the existing relationships among SSME and ICTs, focusing on the potential of Web 2.0 and in general of collaborative technologies which can enable and foster innovation in the service sector. Such technologies innovate both the service development process and the design phases. We show the role of Web 2.0 tools in the value co-production activities carried out by both service providers and customers. The collaborative technologies play an important role in services focusing on knowledge and information management because they promote customer involvement and foster knowledge sharing. We introduce a pattern describing the role of collaborative tools in co-production processes starting from the analysis of Wikipedia [30] as an example of Web 2.0 service. The pattern helps customer to interact during the service development process. The paper is structured as follows: section II analyses the state of the art of the main topic discussed as well as service development research. Section III illustrates how Web 2.0 tools can support the co-production process in the streamline of the Wikipedia case study, and

  • CS246 Lab Notes #1 Unix and Emacs
  • The unix operating system consist of three parts: the kernel, the shell and the programs. The kernel is the heart of Unix, it allocates time and memory, handles file operations and system calls. The shell acts as an interface between the user and the kernel. The shell is what you are typing to at the Unix prompt after you log in. • Polygon & Subdivision Surface Modeling in Maya 8.5: The Mouse Embryo
  • Maya’s polygon toolset has evolved over the past several versions to include numerous approaches for the creation of organic and hard surface objects. This tutorial will take you through the process of creating a mouse embryo starting from a simple polygon cube through the creation of a base mesh suitable for subdividing and detailing. There are lots of ways to accomplish this in Maya, we’ll take a look at some general best practices for poly modeling techniques. The basic strategy behind this method is to create as much of the basic forms of the object as possible with as little geometry as necessary. Be cheap with your geometry, only add faces through edge looping and extruding when you absolutely have to. This will make modeling less frustrating and pleasant. The completed low poly version of the model serves as a base mesh, which can be subdivided. Details are created by moving around the vertices of the base mesh and creasing to create harder edges where necessary. Some Basic Rules For Efficient Poly Modeling - Avoid n-sided polygons (polygons with more than 3 or 4 points). Polygons with 4 points (“quads”) are the best possible choice, 3 point polygons (“triangles”) are OK but are best placed out of sight. N-sided polygons (“n-gons”) can lead to pinched and distorted geometry when subdivided and deformed. - Non-manifold geometry should also be avoided. This refers to a situation in which two or more attached polygons cannot be unfolded to lie on a flat plane without overlapping. This type
  • Basic Cinema 4D abstraction Tutorial
  • Hi, people will find that this tutorial is easier to follow than actually getting Cinema 4D themselves, but common sense will prevail and if you don't have common sense then ask someone that does, anywho, let's begin. (56k beware) Ok, first we are going to look at the Cinema 4D screen itself as there are a number of features that work well with Abstraction, they are numbered and circled in red: 1. This is the Objects Tab, anything in this tab is to with the shapes that are rendered. This is used to create our basic shapes and later, to edit them 2.This is used to edit the structure of our shapes 3. This handily shows us every polygon that makes up the shape, it basically renders a wireframe over the shape. 4. This is the materials area, this allows us to add images and colour to the renders themselves. Ok, now we understand the interface we are using, let us begin. Firstly, we need a shape to play with, go to objects>primitive>sphere and this will render a sphere. We can't do anything yet so lets right click the sphere and click "Make Editable" Now we can start to modify our shape. Now, lets start off with basic modification, to make it easy, we first need to display the wireframe of our sphere, click what I highlighted as number 3 on the interface and then right click the sphere and select "Magnet", this is where the fun begins. • Linux Man Page Howto
  • Why do we write documentation? Silly question. Because we want others to be able to use our program, library function or whatever we have written and made available. But writing documentation is not all there is to it: Documentation must be accessible. If it's hidden in some non?standard place where the documentation?related tools won't find it ?? how can it serve its purpose? • Documentation must be reliable and accurate. There's nothing more annoying than having program behaviour and documentation disagree. Users will curse you, send you hate mail and throw your work into the bit bucket, with the firm intent to never install anything written by that jerk again. • The historical and well known way documentation is accessed on UNIX is via the man(1) command. This HOWTO describes what you have to do to write a man page that will be correctly processed by the documentation? related tools. The most important of these tools are man(1), xman(1x), apropos(1), makewhatis(8) and catman(8). Reliability and accuracy of the information are, of course, up to you. But even in this respect you will find some ideas below that help you avoid some common glitches. How are man pages accessed? You need to know the precise mechanism for acccessing man pages in order to give your man page the right name and install it in the right place. Each man page should be categorized in a specific section, denoted by a single character. The most common sections under Linux, and their human readable names, are: Section The
