  • Breaking into computer networks from the Internet PDF
  • What is this document about anyway? While I was writing this document a book “Hack Proofing Your Network” was released. I haven’t been able to read it (dunno if its in print yet, and besides - everything takes a while to get to South Africa). I did however read the first chapter, as it is available to the public. In this chapter the author writes about different views on IT security - hackers, crackers, script kiddies and everything in between. I had some thoughts about this and decided that it was a good starting point for this document. I want to simplify the issue - let us forget motives at the moment, and simply look at the different characters in this play. To do this we will look at a real world analogy. Let us assume the ultimate goal is breaking into a safe (the safe is a database, a password file, confidential records or whatever). The safe is located inside of a physical building (the computer that hosts the data). The building is located inside of a town (the computer is connected to a network). There is a path/highway leading to the town and the path connects the town to other towns and/or cities. (read Internet/Intranet). The town/city is protected by a tollgate or an inspection point (the network is protected by a firewall, screening router etc.) There might be certain residents (the police) in the town looking for suspicious activity, and reporting it to the town’s mayor (the police
  • Using OEChem and Ogham with Microsoft Visual Studio .NET
  • Microsoft’s Visual Studio development environment is a popular development environment, commonly used by the corporate IT groups of large pharmaceutical companies. Microsoft Visual Studio provides an integrated development environment (IDE) for several programming languages including C, C++, C#, J# and Microsoft Visual Basic that can be used to target graphical and console applications to Intel (and AMD) compatible systems running Microsoft Windows. This document describes how to integrate OpenEye Scientific Software’s toolkit libraries into Visual Studio applications, for example using Microsoft Windows Forms designer, to deliver the power of OEChem’s chemistry functionality to utilities on a chemist’s desktop. Microsoft Versions One potentially problematic aspect of using Microsoft’s development tools to build, debug and deploy is their rapid and continual rate of change. As Microsoft’s Windows operating systems evolve, so do their developer tools to support new functionality, simplified development and ever changing programming paradigms. This means that with each release the user interface of their IDE, the APIs of their libraries and components and even the syntax and names of their programming languages typically change, often in backwardly incompatible ways. The majority of this document describes the use of Microsoft Visual C++ .Net 2003 to develop “managed” Windows Forms applications on Windows 2000 and higher. Although, the steps and code examples given below are known not to work with earlier versions and probably won’t work without modification on later versions, the explanations given in this document should be sufficient for someone skilled/familiar with Microsoft’s tools to adapt to their particular development environment. • PIC Serial Programmer Tutorial
  • We use the PICPgm Develop Software for writing our codes into the Flash Memory of the PIC Microcontroller. PICPgm is very good open source software for Windows. Works well with Windows 98, XP and Vista. It supports even our JDM based programmer circuit. Here is a Screenshot of the software as you open it (without connecting any hardware circuitry). Now, if you just connect the Programmer Hardware PCB (without the actual PIC Microcontroller IC placed on it) to the Serial Port of the Computer CPU (through a Serial Port Connection Wire), and press the ‘Autodetect Programmer Hardware’ Button … you will get to see the type of Programmer Hardware, as follows: Now additionally, if you place any 40?pin PIC Microcontroller IC (belonging to the 16F or 18F Series) on the zip socket, and press the ‘Autodetect PIC Type’ button … you will get to see the IC Number. (You can also program a non?40?pin PIC IC using the external pin connector, instead of using the zip?socket) Download pdf PIC Serial Programmer Tutorial
  • Programming Interrupts for DOS-Based Data Acquisition on 80×86-Based Computers
  • Interrupts are very important to the operation of any computer. Interrupts give the processor the ability to respond quickly to its peripherals (such as the keyboard and the hard disk) and to the outside world in general. Without interrupts, a processor would be unable to service more than one task efficiently and reliably. The importance of the interrupt is illustrated when comparing an interrupt to a doorbell. If your door did not have a doorbell, you would have to periodically go to the door to see if anyone happened to be there at that time. Of course, that would be very inefficient. With a doorbell, you only need to go to the door when the doorbell rings, and you are then confident that someone is there waiting. Likewise, it is not efficient for the processor to continually check whether any of its peripherals require attention at a given time. An interrupt is a doorbell to the processor to signal that some device needs service. During normal execution of a program, instructions are read from memory and executed sequentially by the processor. The processor uses a special register called the instruction pointer to keep track of the next instruction to be executed. A set of general-purpose registers are used for manipulation and temporary storage of any data used by the program. • HR and Search Engine Optimization
  • The purpose of this whitepaper is to help you improve your career section. Having analyzed thousands of company websites and all of their career sections, we have found certain trends that set the successful career sections apart from the rest – simple features and functions that all companies can implement without losing their brand integrity. When your career section is set up well, it reduces your administrative duties, helps maintain your recruitment message and delivers jobseekers. Here is what you can expect to learn from this whitepaper: - Why your jobs may not be on search engines and how to get them included - The hurdles jobseekers face in finding your jobs and how to remove those hurdles - What terms people are using and which ones are worth remembering - The worst ways to present your jobs and what you should be doing The best thing to always remember about improving the traffic to your career section is to make everything blatantly obvious. The fewer clicks it takes to get to your jobs, the faster jobseekers and search engines will find it. And the most obvious spot to put it is on your home page! Jobseekers get frustrated when they have to guess its location, and search engines sometimes just give up. Some companies include it in their “About Us” section, others put the link in “Contact Us”, and for whatever reason some sites only list it in their sitemap. Granted, ideal candidates have the dedication to find the section, but there is no need
  • How to Import Data into Microsoft Access
  • This tutorial demonstrates how to import an Excel file into an Access database. You can also follow these same steps to import other data tables into Access, such as dbf files or txt files, with some minor variation. This document uses some standard database terminology, referring to columns as fields and rows as records. Working with data in Microsoft Access databases can be preferable to working with spreadsheets for a number of reasons. One database file can hold several tables, which makes consolidating and organizing data easier. Databases are also great for calculating summaries and aggregating data more efficiently than a spreadsheet. Access is a relational database, which means that you can bring related data stored in different tables together to summarize and calculate data; a feat that a spreadsheet like Excel cannot perform. Databases are a necessity when working with large datasets, as spreadsheets have a limit of 65,000 records. Finally, Microsoft Access databases are compatible with ArcGIS, as tables within Access databases can be directly accessed by ArcGIS and added to ArcMap. Tables can then be joined to boundary files based on a common field, and the data within the tables can be mapped. This is highly preferable to working with table in the dbf file format, which has very particular syntax rules that makes them difficult to work with. Access databases can also serve as geodatabases for holding boundary files and data tables (for instructions on importing shapefiles into Access, see the Import Shapefiles to Access tutorial). NOTE –
  • Threat Profiling Microsoft SQL Server
  • An attacker's location in the application space and/or the network will largely define how they would approach breaking into a SQL Server 2000 machine from a remote location. If their attacks go through SQL Injection via a web server then their 'cursus incursi' will be considerably different from those when direct access can be gained to the SQL Server. Consequently, this paper will be split into four main sections. The first section will cover attacks that do not require the attacker to have a user ID and password for the SQL Server, that is, the attacks are unauthenticated. The second section will cover those attacks that do require authentication; to succeed the user must be logged onto the SQL Server. The third section will consider those attacks that can be launched from a compromised server. Before any job is undertaken, be it grouting the shower or paving a patio, a lot of unnecessary grief can be avoided by getting the right tools before hand and attacking a computer system is no different. As far as compromising a Microsoft SQL Server is concerned the 'tools of the trade' are a combination of the SQL Server client tools, such as Query Analyzer, SQLPing and a C compiler. One of the most important tools is a copy of MS SQL Server itself. It's far better to examine vulnerability and code an exploit for it on a system in the lab, rather than experimenting on the live target system. Whilst SQL Server is generally good
