  • Standardisation and Licensing of Microsoft's Office Open XML File Formats
  • Extensible Markup Language (‘XML’) is a standard for describing content data in a manner that facilitates the sharing of such content across different systems and applications. Over the last 10 years, the XML standard has been adopted across a wide range of environments in the IT industry. Microsoft is one of many companies that is re-aligning its existing product range to take advantage of the flexibility of XML. One of its current initiatives is the standardization of the Office Open XML File Formats (‘File Formats’).This paper reviews the standardisation process that Microsoft has embarked upon and examines Microsoft’s legal arrangements related to intellectual property associated with the File Formats and the manner in which that legal treatment interacts with other products currently on the market. This paper seeks to address and we hope to clarify any misunderstandings that may exist in the industry, among policymakers and the wider general public, about both the standardisation process and the legal arrangements governing implementation of the File Formats by others. Overview of Office Open XML File Formats For a number of years, the software and IT industry has been moving increasingly from proprietary systems and formats towards ‘open’ standards. In the business applications software market, there are moves to establish ‘open’ file formats of various office applications, including word processing, spreadsheet and presentation products, in order to enable users to easily transfer their documents and data between different applications and to ensure that if their applications cease to be supported in the future that they can
  • You: Programmer and Search Engine Marketer
  • Googling for information on the World Wide Web is such a common activity these days that it is hard to imagine that just a few years ago this verb did not even exist. Search engines are now an integral part of our lifestyle, but this was not always the case. Historically, systems for finding information were driven by data organization and classification performed by humans. Such systems are not entirely obsolete — libraries still keep their books ordered by categories, author names, and so forth. Yahoo! itself started as a manually maintained directory of web sites, organized into categories. Those were the good old days. Today, the data of the World Wide Web is enormous and rapidly changing; it cannot be confined in the rigid structure of the library. The format of the information is extremely varied, and the individual bits of data — coming from blogs, articles, web services of all kinds, picture galleries, and so on — form an almost infinitely complex virtual organism. In this environment, making information findable necessitates something more than the traditional structures of data organization or classification. Introducing the ad-hoc query and the modern search engine. This functionality reduces the aforementioned need for organization and classification; and since its inception, it has been become quite pervasive. Google’s popular email service, GMail, features its searching capability that permits a user to find emails that contain a particular set of keywords. Microsoft Windows Vista now integrates an instant search feature as part of the operating system, helping

  • Compatibility With Visual BASIC
  • The language structures in OpenOffice.org BASIC are very similar to those used in Visual BASIC. The methods used for accessing the underlying documents, however, are vastly different and have essentially no compatibility with each other. Entire books have been written dealing with the differences between Visual BASIC 6 (VB6), Visual BASIC.NET (VB.NET), and Visual BASIC for Applications (VBA). This chapter is only an overview of issues concerning compatibility between the OpenOffice.org BASIC and Visual BASIC. I use VBA, VB6 and VB.NET to refer to the specific versions and VB to generically refer to either or both versions. To convert VB macros that do not access the underlying documents, my first step is to bring them into OOo and fix the syntax errors. The second step is to remove the errors introduced due to differences in behavior. Thorough testing is required to avoid subtle problems. Significant code changes are required to convert the sections that access the underlying document structures. VBA is the variant used by Microsoft Office. VB.NET was released after VBA so it is possible that a later version of VBA will follow in the direction of VB.NET. Some of the keywords supported by OOo BASIC and deprecated when moving from VB6 and VBA to VB.NET... Download pdf Compatibility With Visual BASIC

  • Volvo S60 Road Test Report PDF
  • VOLVO S60 AWD 2.4 litre sedan The ranks of Volvo’s S60 compact luxury cars were recently bolstered by the addition of a new all wheel drive variant called the S60 AWD. The release of an all wheel drive S60 is a significant step by Volvo to ensure its vehicles offer drivers premium levels of safety and vehicle performance. One of the most notable points of the new S60 AWD is that the all wheel drive system is the first electronically controlled system to be fitted to a Volvo car. Previous all wheel drive Volvos used a viscous coupling arrangement. When the front wheels slip, torque is transferred to the rear wheels by the viscous coupling, often causing a certain amount of jerkiness as it locks and unlocks. The S60’s system is a more sophisticated set-up that uses a ‘Haldex’ clutch to monitor and control wheel slippage. On roads offering good traction, 100 per cent of drive is through the front wheels. However, the set-up reacts instantly to changing road surfaces, varying the proportion of drive to the front and the rear wheels as required. Download Volvo S60 Road Test Report PDF
