  • In talking about the Web, whether the original model, the so-called "Web 2.0", or the emerging Semantic Web (aka Web 3.0), one of the most important things to keep in mind is the network effect. The power of the Web emerges through the link space realized between Web pages. This is evidenced in a number of pieces of work, most famously the PageRank algorithm (Brin and Page, 1998) that was behind the early success of Google. Unlike traditional information retrieval algorithms, which were solely based on the information content of the individual pages, PageRank takes into effect how Web pages are linked to each other. By coupling this information with traditional indexing schemes, the system was able to outperform its competitors. The network effect describes the value of a service to a user that arises from the number of people using the service. At its core, it captures that value increases as the number of users increases, because the potential links increase for every user as a new person joins. This is best quantified by what has come to be known as Metcalfe's Law. This proposition developed by Bob Metcalfe in the early 1980s, was originally defined to better explain to his customers why they needed more Ethernet boards than they were buying.   • Nonaka and his knowledge transformation model SECI revolutionized the thinking about organizations as social learning systems. He introduced technical concepts like hypertext into organizational theory. Now, after 15 years Web 2.0 concepts seem to be an ideal fit with Nonaka’s SECI approach opening new doors for more personal, dynamic, and social learning on a global scale. In this paper, we present an extended view of blended learning which includes the combination of formal and informal learning, knowledge management, and Web 2.0 concepts into one integrated solution, by discussing what we call the Web 2.0 driven SECI model based learning process. Peter Drucker, among others, argues that in the emerging economy, knowledge is the primary resource for individuals and for the economy overall; land, labor, and capital. He further argues that improving front-line worker productivity is the greatest challenge of the 21st century [1]. Realizing that knowledge and competence have become increasingly critical to their continued success, organizations worldwide are spending upwards of $ 2.2 trillion dollars on training and education measures, which have become integral to any organization for it to remain competitive [2]. Over the last decade, it has been widely argued that e-Learning could respond to accelerating global competition, increase the quality of learning experiences, remove situational barriers, be more cost effective, and transform the way we learn.   • The Map Book function has been a Part of Map 3D since the early days of ADE. In the last several releases the functionality has become very robust and a whole lot easier to use due to the Sheet Set Manager and a Wizard. That being said, there is one piece of the Map Books that can cause you to go nuts (and many folks it seems just give up)… setting a % Overlap value and still getting a scaled map book. The key to solving this dilemma is in the Map Book template (.dwt). The following is a discussion of and tutorial on how to properly set up a map book template to produce a properly scaled Map Book set (and stop ramming your head against your desk). Overlap actually scales your viewport by the value and does NOT compensate for the Scale you set the viewport to be. THIS IS THE KEY #1 That being said, your scale affects the Viewport in your Map Book .dwt file. The Viewport has to be created to match the desired scale of the Map Book compared to the size of your Map Book Grid. To be successful in scale you must create the Grid (in model space) and use the “Custom” Tiling option. Do not use the “By Area” and “By Number” Tiling Options. THIS IS KEY #2.   • In this document, we examine the creation of native (Windows) executables for Eclipse applications (not for Eclipse itself). While we have concentrated on Windows aspects, the equivalent systems should work without any difficulty on Linux. We will eventually test the generation of native Linux executables. The advantage of compiled Eclipse application executables is that they do not require the JRE, they are self-contained except for the one swt dll. The applications can be distributed in zip format and can be moved around on a machine without requiring changes to the registry (there is no information saved in the Windows registry). GCC and MinGW: To compile Java applications to run on Windows, download the MinGW build of GCC/GCJ 3.3 for win32 from http://www.thisiscool.com/gcc_mingw.htm. This build uses a slightly older version of Eclipse (Eclipse 2.0.2) but it worked without any problems on the applications that we tested. This build includes a build of the SWT libraries so that the entire Eclipse application can be compiled. (The Swing libraries have not yet been ported to GCC/GCJ.) You will view and interact with the VRML file (world, *.wrl) using a web browser. When completed you will be able to freely navigate around and view the internal space. You will also be able to click on the objects in the room to access more information. You need access to a PC with AutoCAD (could be Architectural Desk Top) by AutoDesk, and 3ds max by Discreet. You will also need access to a web browser with a VRML client installed. You must be able to use AutoCAD in 3D to create surfaces, solid primitives and be able to manage layers.
