The 12-in. PowerBook Thin and (Feature) Rich ReviewJust 4.6 pounds light enough to carry most anywhere, yet hefty enough to convey a feeling of solid construction. I believe it was Walt Mossberg at The Wall Street Journal who best summed up the 12-in. PowerBook. It s like one of those all-metal Leica cameras that just reeks of quality. I have to admit having taken a roller-coaster ride of sorts in the past couple of years since Ap p l e i n t roduced its aluminum PowerBooks. I fell fir s t for the 17-in. model (such widescreen real estate), then swooned for the first-generation 12-in. model (a hot little number in more ways than one, espe-cially when you sat it in your lap), then decided that for most users the midrange 15-in. model is the perfect blend of portability and power.
Along the way, I ve bought, borrowed or used just about eve ry combo of PowerBook features that Apple has built, and while I seem to have fin a l l y settled on the 17-in. model for my own use (I have one of the newer 1.67-GHz G4 PowerBooks at home), the entry - s i ze model is no slouch. T he old adage that you can never be too thin or too rich seems like a tailor-made description of what road warriors want in their laptops: thin, lightweight machines that are feature-rich and, of course, inexpensive. With its latest generation of Powe r B o o k s , u n veiled backMapping MashupsAs part of a large undergraduate history course he teaches about World War II, Dr. Martinez developed a mapping mashup that he introduces to the 150 students at the beginning of the semester. The mashup, which works with Google maps, represents major events leading up to and during the war. Fundamentally, it’s a map, he explains, showing them on a projection screen that it works very much like the online mapping tools students regularly use. The map covers virtually the entire globe, and users can move around the world, zooming in and out, showing the area of search as a map, satellite images, or satellite images with maps, dates, and events superimposed.
When students zoom in on Europe, they see flags scattered around the continent and into Asia. Similar maps dot Japan, Southeast Asia, and the South Pacific. When clicked, each flag opens a pop-up box that names the location, explains what happened there and when, and shows a photograph of that site at or close to the date in question. Flags correspond to important battles, political events, treaties that were signed, and cities such as Vichy, the wartime capital of France. The text in the box also includes links to articles that talk in depth about what took place in each location and the significance of that event. Students can zoom in to particular locations and see satellite images of what the place looks like today. They can also get an idea about the terrain where soldiers fought and died.

However, many Office users never touch them. In OOo, styles and templates are even more important than in Office, and wise users will become familiar with both the concepts and the details of using them.
What is a style?
A style is a group of formatting characteristics gathered together and given a name. Styles offer a number of advantages. First, they make it easy to apply the same formatting to different parts of a document; just use the same style. Second, they make it easy to change formatting uniformly; change the formatting of the style and everything using that style changes. Finally, because you can save styles in templates (discussed later in this chapter), it’s easy to use the same formatting across a whole family of documents.
For example, you may decide to write a document using 10-point Arial for the text and 14-point Arial for headings. If you later decide to change to Times New Roman, with styles, you make the change in two places—the definitions of your body text and heading styles. Without styles, you have to go through and change each paragraph.
OpenOffice.org offers a variety of style types, varying with the application. Table 1 shows the types of styles available in the various applications.

Download SourceConverting Geometry Between BRL-CAD and Other FormatsSince 1979, the U.S. Army Research Laboratory* has been developing and distributing the Ballistic Research Laboratory - Computer-Aided Design (BRL-CAD) three-dimensional (3-D) solid modeling package to support combat vehicle vulnerability studies and various other military and industrial applications. The software, which is now in its third generation, includes a large collection of tools and utilities, including an interactive geometry editor, raytracing and generic framebuffer libraries, network-distributed image-processing/signal-processing capabilities, and an embedded scripting language.
In support of the package, a multivolume tutorial series is being written to assist users with the many features and functionality of BRL-CAD. Three volumes have been published thus far. Volume I provides an overview of the package contents and installation (Butler and Edwards, 2002). Volume II addresses the basic functionality of the package’s Multi-Device Geometry Editor (MGED) and offers a comprehensive list of the user commands available (Butler et al., 2001). Volume III discusses the modeling process as well as principles and techniques to help maximize BRL-CAD’s effectiveness (Butler et al., 2003). All of these documents are available for download at (U.S. Army Research Laboratory, 2003).
The purpose of Volume IV is to discuss issues of compatibility and conversion between the BRL-CAD geometry file format and the formats of various other computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), and computer-aided engineering (CAE) packages. Conversion is increasingly important for BRL-CAD users who must interact with a growing number of Government and commercial organizations involved in the research, development, testing, and evaluation of today’s combat systems.

It uses the Virtools plug-in directly loaded in Maya. The Scene in Maya Load the “mountains.ma” scene in the tutorial’s “scenes” file into Maya. To do so, place “mountains.ma” directly in your Maya “/scenes” directory. Then place the 4 textures in “/sourceimages”. Using Distance Snap
Back when I was drafting on basic AutoCAD, a long time ago, I had a bad habit. I’d spend hours making my drawings look good. Yeah, you know what I mean; it all starts when trying to place dimension lines at just the right distance from the geometry, then it snow balls into aligning dimensions and rearranging dimensions and before you know it you’ve just spent another hour. Thankfully, we upgraded to AutoCAD Mechanical and I found power dimension and its distance snap... the rest they say is history.
So here’s how it works. After you’ve specified the first and second extension lines, power dimension will ask you to specify the dimension line location; just like AutoCAD does. But instead of trying to find another dimension to align it with, keep dragging your cursor. The preview will ‘snap’ to a location and change from green to red.
