Application of Time-Temperature-Stress Parameter to High Temperature Performance of Aluminum AlloysBecause the properties of aluminum alloys are dependent upon both the exposure temperature and also to the length of time of exposure, the prediction of design values for structures designed to last many years is a significant challenge. For relatively short-life structures, the need is addressed simply by planning ahead and carrying out a test plan that replicates the intended service conditions. This is feasible for structures whose design life might be as much as a year or even five years, but it is not very practical for structures for which the life expectancy is 10 years or more.
Since the early 1950s, the analyses of long time, high temperature data for aluminum alloys, ferrous metals and superalloys (1-4), has been addressed through the use of time-temperature parametric equations that permit the consolidation of data obtained over a variety of temperatures and exposure times into a single relationship. Once such relationships are established based upon the available experimental data and optimized, it is possible to extrapolate to service conditions substantially beyond the range of the test data themselves. This must always be done cautiously and with awareness of the extent of the extrapolation, but it provides a better perspective than simply extrapolating individual strength life curves.

Today workflow management systems are readily available [6,49,59] and workflow technology is hidden in many applications, e.g., ERP, CRM, and PDM systems. However, their application is still limited to specific industries such as banking and insurance. Since 2000 there has been a growing interest in web services. This resulted in a stack of Internet standards (HTTP, XML, SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI) which needed to be complemented by a process layer. Several vendors proposed competing languages, e.g., IBM proposed WSFL (Web Services Flow Language) [48] building on FlowMark/MQSeries and Microsoft proposed XLANG (Web Services for Business Process Design) [71] building on Biztalk. BPEL [16] emerged as a compromise between both languages.

Core features, such as the automatic evaluation of variational forms and adaptive mesh refinement, are implemented as basic tools at kernel level. Since almost two years, there has been an active debate over the endurance of the two giant enterprise platforms, Microsoft‘s .NET and Sun‘s Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE). Which technology would emerge as the leading platform for developing new web applications?
Now that the combat has settled down a bit, each platform has managed to capture a substantial share of market for itself. In fact, many organizations have arranged for a strategy for one or the other of these frameworks. But many (e.g. those which have large investments in the legacy systems) are still evaluating the merits of the two platforms. The IT personnel in those businesses is questioning as to what extent would choosing .NET or J2EE influence their host strategy, etc.
It's getting harder, not easier, to pick a clear winner, because J2EE and .NET are so similar. With J2EE and .NET, selection may be based less upon intrinsic merits of the platforms and more on your existing environment (e.g. resources, investments) and personal preference or style. Instead of choosing your platform based on marketing hype or technical bias, you can look at more bottom-line factors:
• What assets does your company already possess (software, hardware, middleware)?
• What level of experience do you have in people who know both your business and your implemented technology?
• Will upgrading that system asset result in a positive ROI for the business? Only the textures required to display the current scene are held in RAM. When new textures need to appear in the scene, they are loaded from a larger and slower repository, or they are dynamically generated.
For example, textures can be pulled from disk into system RAM or downloaded from system RAM into the video RAM of a 3D accelerator. Textures can be dynamically generated by combining illumination maps with unlit source textures. QUAKE was one of the first games to implement a texture caching system that interacts closely with the 3D pipeline to cache graphics in an efficient manner (see References). DOOM cached textures as well, but its system was more of a solid- state approach, as was the data caching scheme in the 2D side-scroller ABUSE. The source code to both ABUSE and DOOM is now available; see the References at the end of this article. This article is broken into two parts. First, we’ll discuss the nature of texture maps and the issues involved in implementing a texture cache. Then, we’ll look at some concrete implementations of caching systems used in games that are currently under development.
