  • The UCM-8x modems are a series of general-purpose industrial modems, which can be used for data communication through Public Switched Telephone Networks (PSTN) or Leased/Private Lines. The modems can operate in 2-wire, full-duplex, asynchronous modes at line rates up to 33.6 Kbps and can perform complete handshake and data rate negotiations. Tone and pattern detection functions required by the applicable ITU or Bell standards are supported and dialling, call progress, and the telephone line interface are supported and controlled through the AT command set. The modem connects to the DTE (Data Terminal Equipment, such as a PC, industrial controller or telemetry outstation) via a serial interface (EIA RS232). The module has 2 interface ports: Serial interface, RS 232 (9 pole sub-D) with hardware handshake control lines - and the telephone line interface. (6 pole RJ11 modular jack). The built-in power supply for 12-48VDC, is provided with galvanic isolation. The modems are made in industrial 108mm wide aluminium housing for DIN rail mounting. • From Programming Language Design to Computer Construction
  • Niklaus Wirth of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology {ETH] waspresented the 1984 ACM A. M. Ihring Award at the Association's Annual Conference in San Francisco in October in recognition of his outstanding work in developing a sequence of innovative computer languages: Euler' ALGOL-W, Modula, and Pascal. Pascal, in particular, has become significant pedagogically and has established a foundation for future research in the areas of computer language, systems, and architecture. The hallmarks of a Wirth language are its simplicity, economy of design, and high-quality engineering, which result in a language whose notation appears to be a natural extension of algorithmic thinking rather than an extraneous formalism. Wirth's ability in language design is complemented by a masterful writing ability. In the April 1971 issue of Communications of the ACM, Wirth published a seminal paper on Structured Programming {"Program Develop- ment by Stepwise Refinement"] that recommended top-down structuring of programs {i.e., successively refining program stubs until the program is fully elaborated]. The resulting elegant and powerful method of exposition remains interesting reading today even after the furor over Structured Programming has subsided. 1lvo later papers, "Toward a Discipline of Real-Time Programming" and "What Can We Do About the Unnecessary Diversity of Notation" {published in CACM in August and November 1974, respectively], speak to Wirth's consistent and dedicated search for an adequate language formalism. The Taring Award, the Association's highest recognition of technical contributions to the computing community, honors Alan M. Taring, the English mathematician who defined the computer prototype Taring machine and helped
  • Introducing to Silverlight
  • If you've been watching the technical news or attended MIX '07, then you’ve probably been hearing about Silverlight (f.k.a. WPF/E). The idea behind Silverlight is simple -- provide a cross-browser, cross-platform technology for 2D vector graphics, animations and DRM high-definition media. Currently, Microsoft is targeting the Mac using either Firefox or Safari and Windows using IE6/IE7 or Firefox. There are actually two different versions of Silverlight currently available. The first, 1.0 (beta), utilizes the same XAML tags as WPF to describe the visual appearance and animations for content. It uses Javascript to control the behavior of those elements by allowing Javascript functions to locate and manipulate properties of the elements created in XAML. This release targets web developers as it uses many of the technologies they are familiar with and use in their development today. The second version, 1.1 (alpha) was announced at MIX '07 and it adds a CLR engine to the implementation - allowing the code behind to be done in C# or VB.NET instead of Javascript. This will radically change the playing field, as it will open up rich-client web applications to a wide audience of .NET developers. The first step in using either version of Silverlight is to download the appropriate browser plug-in. You can get these from the Silverlight website http://www.silverlight.net. Both 1.0 and 1.1 versions have Mac and Windows implementations available. If you want to use Visual Studio .NET to do your development, then you should download the Orcas Beta release and the project template for Silverlight. Download

  • DNA: variations on a theme in Maya
  • In this tutorial, we’ll explore different methods for modeling, rigging, and animating DNA. There are many ways to approach this macromolecule in Maya and each has its merits depending on what the model will be used for in your scene. We’ll start with a simple ‘plank’ DNA model that is roughly based on what is known about the molecule’s proportions, and then look at different ways to deform it. Next we’ll import a PDB coordinate set for B-DNA and experiment with different representations using particles. These first two methods assume that the helix does not need to unwind and melt. Finally, we’ll go over a programmatic approach to building DNA using PDB data for a single base pair – this method will allow us to twist and unzip the double helix. Modeling plank DNA In this first exercise, we’ll create a stand-in model for B-DNA that could be useful in schematic animations where atomic resolution is not required and melting of the double helix is not necessary. Here’s a quick overview of the process: 1) model a base pair with polygons, 2) animate its rotation and elevation to use the ‘animated snapshot’ tool, 3) create 2 NURBS curves slightly offset from the base pair, 4) use the ‘animated sweep’ tool to extrude those circles and create the backbone and finally 5) ‘duplicate special’ to create additional helical turns to the model prior to rigging. Although we’ve reviewed B-DNA’s characteristics above, let’s also have a PDB-derived cartoon model in our scene to make sure

  • The projectile fragment separator provides wide variety of radioactive nuclear ions without any restrictions on chemical property or lifetime limit of the ions, which are unavoidable problems in the ordinary ion-source-based ISOL (isotope sep- arator on-line)facilities.The beam energy and quality in terms of the longitudinal and transverse emittance is,how- ever, not adequate for low-energy beam experiments,in particular for trapping experiments.Trapped unstable nuclear ions enable us to perform variety of high precision experiments. We will primarily apply this method to the precision spectroscopy of the hyper ne structure 1) .The magnetic hy- per ne constant A shows weak but nite isotope dependence called hyper ne anomaly, the main part of which stems from the nite size of the magnetization distribution in the nucleus Download Slow or Trapped RI-beams from Projectile Fragment Separators and Their Laser Spectroscopy pdf

  • Network Effects and Microsoft
  • The economic theory of network effects has received a great deal of sustained attention, as it appears to capture some of the most important features of modern high tech industries. The positive implications of the theory are important for understanding the structure of those industries, especially over time. They include positive feedback in the decision rules of individual actors, indeterminacy of equilibrium, lock-in to particular network standards, first-mover advantages or barriers to entry, high inertia for established standards but high volatility for nascent ones, and strategic competition that is intense in the period of establishing a network standard, then largely absent after lock-in. This is not the simplest body of implications to test, for two reasons. As the theory involves strong elements of positive feedback and the resulting coordination, econometric testing faces severe difficulties associated with distinguishing the behavior of different actors. Another critical implication of the theory, multiple equilibria and the resulting indeterminacy, poses very difficult problems for the empirical scholar of attempting to observe what didn‘t happen. This paper tests the theory by looking at business documents from the Microsoft antitrust case. While the documents are public because attorneys thought they would be useful in the policy context of a trial, my use is entirely positive, not normative. The unique perspective offered by internal documents gives us an opportunity to examine the relationship between the theory and the marketplace in several ways. Microsoft is a very analytical firm, and thinks of itself as involved in complex strategic games involving many
