  • SEO Myths Dispelled: Flash Video
  • By now, everyone has visited a website that utilizes Flash multimedia within its design. Since 1996, the use of Flash has grown in popularity thanks to its ability to add animation and interactivity to websites. More recently, Flash has become an essential component in the prolific distribution of intrusive "pop-ups," or web-based advertisements. Flash also grants designers the ability to integrate video into web pages, and this has led many within the Web 2.0 space to use Flash to develop rich Internet applications. Many companies, including my own, Denver interactive agency Fusionbox, offer streaming Flash Video Solutions to clients in need of online video. While the inclusion of Flash into websites no doubt enriches the user experience rendering it that much "flashier," search engine optimizers (SEOs) have long been wary of the use of Flash due to the fact that it's supposedly unindexable by the search engines. Key word here: supposedly. As we all know, the search engine game changes daily. If it stayed the same, it wouldn't be called a game. The inherent beauty of it is that no one knows everything. Instead, we're all just players who know something, and we're all moving forward as we try to learn more, keeping up with developments happening in our space. One such development is the evolution of Flash and the impact it has had on the science of search. Back in the day, Flash files were not indexable by search engines because the content was hidden from the spider's digital “eyes.” The implications
  • Lockr: Social Access Control for Web 2.0
  • Sharing personal content online is surprisingly hard despite the recent emergence of a huge number of content sharing systems and sites. These systems suffer from several drawbacks: they each have a different way of providing access control which cannot be used with other systems; moving to a new system is a lengthy process and requires registration and invitation of all one’s friends to the new system; and the rules for access control are complicated and become more so as our networks of online friends grow. In this paper, we present Lockr–an access control scheme based on social relationships that makes sharing personal content easy. Lockr separates social networking information from the content sharing mechanisms, thereby eliminating the need for users to maintain many site-specific copies of their social networks. We describe Lockr’s design, security properties, and limitations. We also present how we integrated Lockr with two popular systems for sharing content online – BitTorrent and Flickr. Today, sharing personal content is surprisingly difficult. Current systems suffer from a number of drawbacks. They are cumbersome to use, they impose artificial limits on the size of shared content (e.g., pictures and video), and they make it difficult to restrict content only to a specific set of users. For those Web sites that do provide access control, they typically require all the participants to be registered with the site in question. This imposes the burden that users must register with many sites, and maintain separate and potentially inconsistent copies of their social networks for each
  • Fiat Bravo Changing / removing / refitting of front brakes pads
  • The first thing you need to do is jack up the car and remove the wheel. After you have done that, you will be left with this. Now the first step in removing the caliper is to take off the spring on the front side. You do it using some pliers. The yellow arrow shows the spring. The second pic shows the caliper with the spring removed. The next step is to remove the corks (red arrows) and unscrew the two 7mm alen (imbus) screws that hold the caliper. The screws are under the corks – pic2 To get the screws out, insert the 7mm alen key in and unscrew them out. This is how the screws looks like. The white arrow points where the other one is. When the screws are out, you need to disconnect the pad wear cable. It is on one of the sides of the car (HGT-both sides). Connector is circled red. After that is done, pull the caliper toward you by hand. Next step is to remove the pad wear cable from its holder on the caliper. After you remove it, it should dangle freely like this. Then pull off the caliper in the yellow arrow direction. After you have pulled the caliper off, you will be left with one pad on the caliper holder and one on the caliper piston. • Convergence – Mobile Web 2.0
  • The evolution of Web 2.0 has deep roots in our human psyche. Web 2.0 is about connecting two or more users with each other, creating communities, connecting assets to owners and growing virally. Enterprise Web 2.0 involves another level of engagement by connecting assets to people, and enterprises to enterprises. Tangible “connected value” comes in various shades, leaving the phylogeny difficult to define. Fundamentally, the Internet is far ahead of the mobile industry in developing 2.0 applications. A concept that has captured Web 2.0 is annotated broadcast television. This includes a term called “vommenting” (spelling is correct). Enterprise Web 2.0 applications, and its coordination of documents, workflow and communications, gives rise to a term called “Webification.” The goal is that the IT organization becomes a catalyst for organizational change through the use of the flexibility of business-driven technology. Some of the examples outlined in this report are 5 to 10 years away; however, the principles which provide guidance are in development, now, on a global scale. This report comments on a modicum of the evolving Web 2.0, and Mobile Web 2.0, environments. It is up to the user, and the enterprise, to experiment and implement. The Internet is evolving from desire, to human interaction. In the field of telecommunications, this is a multi-layered integrated world. It came from a simple tethered telephony solution - the land line telephone. Therefore, there is a revolution developing at the edge of the network which will impact our society in many fundamental ways. Individuals are increasingly connected through
  • Translution Web 2.0 Specifications
  • Most people’s experience of using machine translation (MT) to translate text from one language into another is likely to be by using either Google (www.google.com) to translate a foreign-language web page, or a service like Babel Fish (www.babelfish.altavista.com) to translate a block of text from one language. Using MT is becoming an increasingly common experience: today there are over three billion pages translated by machine from one language to another on the Internet every month. This is likely to increase as the number of people with English as their first language as a proportion on internet users continues to drop. But if you have used one of these services, you’ll know that the results are often far from perfect. These services generally convey the meaning of the message, but are rarely fluent and you certainly wouldn’t want to use them to translate an important document from your language into another! So if there’s so much of it being done, why is the translation quality poor? The reality is that neither Google nor Babel Fish are good examples of what MT can really achieve. There is nothing wrong with the underlying translation technology, but these implementations are simply doing a sentence by sentence translation without any additional processing. There are a number of ways in which the quality of an automatic machine translation can be dramatically improved today. These include: • Use of Dictionaries • Identification of words and phrases that should not be translated • Improving the translatability of the source language text • Not translating already translated

  • IS Support for Web 2.0 Services – the Next Steps
  • The web is changing from being essentially a unidirectional publishing medium to one which supports multiparty content creation and collaboration – a change which provides both rich opportunities and challenges. The use of blogs, wikis, media-sharing services and other social software has been shown to empower both staff and students and to create exciting new learning opportunities. Examples include the use of blogs to allow students to share and reflect on learning, and to allow researchers to share knowledge, exchange ideas and easily publish work. Wikis provide a collaborative, easy to use content authoring tool for students, researchers and support staff. Social bookmarking services have introduced user defined tags, facilitating shared resource identification, while virtual worlds like Second Life have introduced new possibilities for social networking among distance students, and unique opportunities for the development of innovative pedagogies. We have now had two reports on Web 2.0 in the University: an initial report which proposed one way forward, and a second report following an extensive consultation effort, which improved our understanding of user concerns in this area, as well as raising the profile of Web 2.0 in the user community. Our extensive preparatory work in this area is recognised as unique in a JISC report on Web 2.0 in learning and teaching. Now the IS Strategic Management Group has decided that Information Services should start implementing what’s been discussed. This paper makes the vision of what we’re trying to achieve more explicit, and outlines necessary steps towards its realization. Download pdf IS
