Web Services – An Integral Element of Oecd's dot.STAT Technology Framework for Statistical ApplicationsThe combination of evolving ICT standards that increase the interoperability between applications and the ever-increasing need for a more seamless access to and exchange of information is a major driver in the OECD ICT strategy. This paper describes the role and use of web services in the context of recent developments at the OECD to improve the accessibility of statistical information. It follows up on a paper presented at the 2002 ISIS meeting about “Improving Access to Statistical Information at OECD in Response to Users’ Requirements” and describes a technology framework – called “dot.STAT” – that has been devised for the implementation of applications that enable easy access to certain OECD reference data. The concepts outlined in this paper have been developed in close collaboration with the Statistics Directorate, specialised OECD-internal groups and task forces 2, as well as members of the SDMX Consortium3.
The dot.STAT development framework is designed to help implement the basic infrastructure for the new OECD Statistical Information System. It incorporates a central data warehouse and is part of a broader statistical strategy, which depends on a glossary of statistical terms and a corporate meta-data repository.
The objectives of the dot.STAT framework are threefold. The first aim is to offer a single platform/repository for multiple data/meta-data sets with different characteristics. Secondly it comprises a complete set of information broker tools to make replication from working/production databases as transparent and simple as possible. User Interface
The user interface provided by AutoCAD LT is similar to that of many other CAD and layout design software packages. Select this option from the menu as shown below.
At this point AutoCAD LT will display a white drawing area with a set of toolbars. The important buttons and features on these toolbars are shown in the figure below. Again, since we are only concerned with layout, the majority of AutoCAD’s design tools will be unnecessary.

2. Click on your first image. Hold the shift key down. Click on the last image-this will select all images. To select images non-sequentially, hold the control key down and select. Click OK once selected. The images will now load into the timeline.
3. To reorder your images, click and drag and reposition in the timeline.
NOTE: you can always add other imagery by repeating step 2 above.
4. OPTIONAL: Once the order of the images have been determined (this may be predetermined in a storyboard), you may wish to remove the black borders of your images. Click Remove Black borders. Click Yes to All. Click OK.

ODA deployed on the OSCAR Subversion trunk uses Perl modules to connect, update, and query the database. Also, all the database subroutines for the end users are defined in a single Perl module, which is a collection of database subroutines and does the intermediate work between back-end database and OSCAR installation. As the previous paper showed, the old ODA has three problems. First, it can not fully support new features of OSCAR.
Second, its implementation is overly complicated and takes a long time to learn and modify. Finally, its schema was also not well organized: 11 tables among 30 OSCAR tables are not used at all after OSCAR installation creates all the tables and numerous redundant shortcuts make developers confused in deciding what shortcuts should be used. OSCAR, therefore, needed more flexibility and a better organized database schema. The new version of ODA was developed not only to resolve the above chronic problems but also to establish a bridgehead for supporting OSCAR.
