  • Using HTML Help With Microsoft Access
  • Access 97 was released about the same time as HTML Help, so there is zero support for this particular help system from Access 97. For example, you won't be able to use the help functionality of the MsgBox function with HTML Help as it only works with WinHelp. The way to fix this particular problem is to use Sönke Huckfeldt's techniques for creating custom MsgBox and InputBox functions. These techniques can be found in a sample database which is available from the same page you retrieved this article from. You can snag code out of the HTML Help class module to call topics from a menu, command buttons, etc., in Access 97 and 2000. However, there's a problem with this in that Access doesn't use App.Path to derive the path to the application as in the class module code. Microsoft Access MVP Doug Steele suggests using the following to replace App.Path: Download pdf Using HTML Help With Microsoft Access
  • Manual for Unbound on Windows
  • This manual aims to provide information about the Unbound server on the Windows platform. Included is installation, uninstallation and some information on configuration specific for Windows. Full details of operating a DNS resolver are not part of this document, and can better be documented in a platform independent document. What is Unbound and what is DNSSEC Unbound is a DNS resolver. It supports validation, caching, and DNSSEC. It supports NSEC and NSEC3, Ipv4 and Ipv6. Unbound is written for Unix (posix) machines, and runs on FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD and Linux (Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu, ...). This document is about the Windows version. The service that unbound provides is that it performs DNS lookups, and can perform DNSSEC validation on the result. If the result is bad, it is not returned to the client (who sees a temporary error in name resolution). Applications that support DNSSEC can ask to see the verification result. DNSSEC is a standard for securing the information in the DNS. Your validator needs to have public keys to check the signatures on the data. DNSSEC is explained more fully on http://www.dnssec.net pages. The unbound package for windows provides DNSSEC validation – the client that verifies the signatures published by authoritative DNS servers on the internet. Download pdf Manual for Unbound on Windows
  • C#, .NET, & SQL Server Setup Guide pdf
  • This document discusses some general principles in developing database applications using C#, .NET, and Microsoft SQL Server. We’ll develop a command line database application to manage contacts. General ideas apply to the GUI oriented version—in fact, that’s the homework: To create a GUI version of this thing. For this whole scheme to work, you need a few tools. These include: • .NET Framework SDK • Microsoft SQL Server The .NET Framework SDK is a free download from the Microsoft website. You go to the Microsoft website, click on download, select “.NET” then search—then pick and download the 100MB (or so) .NET Framework SDK 1.1 package. The SQL Server is a bit of a different matter. Apparently Microsoft (in all their wisdom) wishes to make it relatively difficult for developers to get a copy of their server—so they’re selling it for $49.99 : http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/development.asp There is a way around buying SQL Server: Use the school provided server. Another possible way around is to download the “Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000)”, which is really just SQL Server, except without any tools. (ie: like MySQL server without the useful ‘mysql’ program to interact with the database). There are many ‘Query’ programs online to use instead, like “SqlBuddy” (search sourceforge.net for it). Next week we’ll use Oracle—which is just a free download. Download C#, .NET, & SQL Server pdf
  • Programming in CSharp pdf
  • CSharp is designed for the .NET framework. The .NET framework is object oriented. CSharp has a great set of tools for the object oriented programmer. CSharp is the first component oriented language in the C/C++ family. Component concepts are first class: Properties, methods, events Design-time and run-time attributes integrated documentation using XML CSharp can be embedded in web pages. In C++ and Java primitive date types (int, double, etc) are magic and do not interoperate with objects. In Smalltalk and Lisp primitive types are objects, but at great performence cost. CSharp unifies this with no performance cost. CSharp also adds new primitive data types, for example decimal. Collections work for all types. In CSharp, private is the default accessibility. The accessibility options are: public - accessible to all private - accessible to containing class protected - accessible to containing or derived classes internal - accessible to code in same assembly protected internal - means protected or internal Classes can be marked as public or internal. By default classes are private. Download Programming in CSharp pdf
  • Silverlight 2 Beta 2 Tutorial - Introducing Expression Blend For Silverlight Developers
  • Beginning with version 2.5 (currently in Preview Edition) building Silverlight 2 applications, and especially assembling the User Interface components such as items from the toolbox, and layout controls, is easier than ever. A Note on This Tutorial. The history of the material for this tutorial is that Scott Guthrie wrote a terrific introduction to this material at the end of February, which he gave me permission to turn into a series of videos, currently (or soon to be) available on Silverlight.NET. This tutorial completes the circle by building on the videos and integrating the material into the Silverlight Tutorial series. The project we’re setting out to build is very similar to the Silverlight chat service built by ScottGu, and is shown in Figure 5-1 The Solution Files Take a look in the upper right hand corner. The solution, project and other files created by Blend are identical to the files created by Visual Studio 2008. In fact; there is no exporting/importing between the two; you can open both development environments on the same files simultaneously and they will both work perfectly. Chat Application – First Steps Begin by switching to design view, and then hold the control key and use the mouse wheel to zoom out so that you can see the entire grid. If your mouse doesn’t have a wheel, you can zoom by picking a value (or filling in an arbitrary value) at the bottom of the design window or by using the menu choices View?Zoom In and View?Zoom Out You can move

  • Web 2.0 Access Control Best Practices – Part 1
  • So - you are wrapping up development of yet another Web app. The database is in place, CRUD functions are working, user interface and reports have been signed off. Now your thoughts are turning to access control. Just enough time to splice in that trusty user authentication and roles module, make a few tweaks and move on to the next project. Wait! Do you really want to contribute yet another authorization stovepipe to the growing forest? We all curse the proliferation of authentication and authorization “solutions” on the Web. Yet we continue to treat access control as an after thought. Developers accept the benefits of adopting third-party solutions for common functions such as data storage, cryptography, numerical analysis, parsing, etc., yet continue to roll their own application access control solutions. Why? The disadvantages of RYO are obvious: application-specific user accounts and passwords proliferate, each application reinvents how roles should be implemented -- perhaps even a language for specifying access constraints -- and, if integration with an external authentication framework is required, each application must implement interfaces to the drivers. This is irritating to our users, a headache for those who administer the applications, and costly to maintain. In this article we develop a set of Web 2.0 best practices for “outsourcing” the access control problem. Following these practices produces applications that readily integrate into an organization’s existing access control infrastructure, and simplifies application development and maintenance. Examples are based on DACS (http://dacs.dss.ca) – the Distributed Access Control System. DACS is a mature, lightweight
