  • Introducing to Silverlight
  • If you've been watching the technical news or attended MIX '07, then you’ve probably been hearing about Silverlight (f.k.a. WPF/E). The idea behind Silverlight is simple -- provide a cross-browser, cross-platform technology for 2D vector graphics, animations and DRM high-definition media. Currently, Microsoft is targeting the Mac using either Firefox or Safari and Windows using IE6/IE7 or Firefox. There are actually two different versions of Silverlight currently available. The first, 1.0 (beta), utilizes the same XAML tags as WPF to describe the visual appearance and animations for content. It uses Javascript to control the behavior of those elements by allowing Javascript functions to locate and manipulate properties of the elements created in XAML. This release targets web developers as it uses many of the technologies they are familiar with and use in their development today. The second version, 1.1 (alpha) was announced at MIX '07 and it adds a CLR engine to the implementation - allowing the code behind to be done in C# or VB.NET instead of Javascript. This will radically change the playing field, as it will open up rich-client web applications to a wide audience of .NET developers. The first step in using either version of Silverlight is to download the appropriate browser plug-in. You can get these from the Silverlight website http://www.silverlight.net. Both 1.0 and 1.1 versions have Mac and Windows implementations available. If you want to use Visual Studio .NET to do your development, then you should download the Orcas Beta release and the project template for Silverlight. Download

  • Following the links to the titles of each frame will cause a frame to fill the window - thus enabling searching of individual frames, and facilitating setting of bookmarks to individual pages. (Contents frames, have two links to the title; the word Contents brings the Contents frames to the top.) This help has been built with UNIX machines in mind. If you are using TeXtures on a Macintosh, you should find parts of this help useful, particularly, if you have updated your version of LaTeX to run LaTeX 2e (as opposed to LaTeX 2.09 which demands files should start with the obsolete command documentstyle ...). Note to TeXtures and remote users: feel free to download local LaTeX packages/document classes (you will need to have LaTeX 2e for these) or local plain TeX files. A primitive but effective way to Search for (La)TeX related files is by checking ls-R for the appropriate .sty or .tex or whatever file (e.g. use Find from the Edit menu). • The First Appearance of Web 2.0
  • It is hard to pinpoint the moment of Web 2.0’s emergence – because there was not one. The was no release of a single new technology. There was no single economic insight or business model that completely disrupted existing markets. There was no industry consortium that defined a new standard. If forced to pick a moment, perhaps Google’s IPO will serve historically as the marker – in the same way that Netscape’s IPO’s is often used to signify the birth of the dot com era. At any rate, at some point over the past 12 to 18 months several factors have aligned and a there is now recognition that the companies and web services that are moving the internet market today share many common characteristics. Formally, “Web 2.0” as a label was first used by Tim O’Reilly and Dale Dougherty of O’Reilly Publishing. The story goes that the two were brainstorming about the shared characteristics of today’s successful internet companies compared with the characteristics of the pre-dotcom bubble companies of 2000. Their brainstorming led to the birth of a conference – Web 2.0 (http://www.web2con.com/web2con/), which was held in October of 2004. The evolution of internet focused companies and services in the 13 months since that conference have helped to reinforce – and extend - their observations. Web 2.0 Characteristics Ultimately, Web 2.0 is an industry buzzword. Like any buzzword, it’s usefulness can be debated because they are easily mis-used and misunderstood. For me, it is best to think of “Web 2.0” as a

  • Best Practices for Secure Web Development
  • The following document is intended as a guideline for developing secure web-based applications. It is not about how to configure firewalls, intrusion detection, DMZ or how to resist DDoS attacks. This is a task best addressed at system and network level. However, there is little material available today intended for developers. We have entered the dotcom age in which a web site is no longer an isolated site, but an extension of the internal business systems, yet there isn’t much about how to create this extension securely. Traditionally, developers have worked on systems for environments where malicious intents were not a real threat: internal systems, software for home use, intranets. There may have been occasional exceptions, sometimes with embarrassing outcomes, but they could be dealt with at HR level and the example prevented others from attempting it again. An isolated (read: not linked with internal systems) web site is not far from the same scenario: the security was treated mostly at the system level by installing the necessary OS and web server fixes and applying correct settings and permissions. If a breach occurred, the system was taken offline, rebuilt better and the site put up again. Everything at a system administration level. However, as the Internet becomes more and more commercial (after all, this is where the .com comes from), a web site becomes more and more an application. Thus, the team has more and more developers, skilled in web and traditional development. However, few resources for them focus enough on security
  • Volvo Service Manual - Lubricants / Fluids
  • The only oil recommended, for Volvo manufactured transmissions is that whiari has quality GL-1. The teeth in the Volvo transmissions are so dimensioned that there is nojneed for any additives of sulphur or phosphor. The judgement being therefore that there is hardly any advantage in uajng these additives. For this reasDTiGL-4 and GL-5 oils are not recommended for Volvo manufactured transmissions. The seals in the Volvo transmissions are of a very high quality and normally withstand GL-5 oils. Also the steel/ molybdenum synchromesh does not appear to be par- ticularly sensitive to this oil. Problems can however arise at very high temperatures, such as when driving in mountainous terrain or when the power take-off is being used. There is a risk that deposits from the oil form a coating which block the oil filter and oil channels so that the operation of the oil cooler is impaired. We therefore advise against the use of GL-4 and GL-5 oils in Volvo manufactured transmissions. The German transmission manufacturers recommend GL-4 oils. We approve therefore the use of GL-4 oils in Volvo vehicles with ZF manufactured transmissions. However even here we firmly advise against the use of GL-5 oils. AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS, POWER STEERING Trucks fitted; with Volvo automatic transmissions require ATF quality Dexron II D to facilitate smooth gear changing. Very great demands are made on oil for automatic trans- mission and power steering installations. The oil must have a very low sensitivity to temperature, that is, temperature variations must have as little influence as
  • Ajax and Java development made simpler Part 4
  • Create JSF-like components, using JSP tag files Learn how to use deferred values and deferred methods in custom JSP tag JavaServer Pages (JSP) and JavaServer Faces (JSF) used to have different variants of the Expression Language (EL). Their unification in JSP 2.1 opened new possibilities, allowing you to use deferred values and deferred method attributes in your custom JSP tags. This article shows how to develop Java™ Web components based on JSP tag files, which are much simpler and easier to build than the JSF components. JSP and JSF are the most important Java standards that we use today for building Web applications. The philosophies of these two technologies are quite different, however. With JSP, the underlying mechanisms are simple, you control what is happening, and you have the freedom to do things how you want. JSF adds some complexity and processing overhead, but the application model is standardized, which means tools can do more for you, vendors can provide component libraries, and developers can focus on building applications. As Parts 2 and 3 of this series demonstrated, you don't really need a complex framework for building Web forms. If you like simplicity or if you need to develop a Web application quickly, you can use the JSP Standard Tag Library (JSTL) in combination with tag files and dynamic attributes. You'll be able to customize your components very easily, controlling the HTML output and the HTTP requests. Using the JSF framework together with a good component library may be the right choice if you are
