  • PHP & MySQL Lab 1
  • What is MySQL? • MySQL is an SQL based relational database management system that runs on more than 20 platforms including Windows, Linux, OS/X, HP-UX and many more. • The owner and producer of MySQL is a Swedish company called MySQL AB. They provide services and training programs for MySQL users. The software’s official website http://www.mysql.com gives the latest information about the company and MySQL. • MySQL is declared the world’s most popular open source database by its founders: “It's used in more than 6 million installations ranging from large corporations to specialized embedded applications on every continent in the world. (Yes, even Antarctica!).” www.mysql.com • The reasons for its popularity are: It is free and open source! Users can download the code for free and modify it according to their needs. Its consistent fast performance. Speed is crucial in database driven applications since the time it takes for the user to see the result of a query is the main performance measure for the application. High reliability. Every release of MySQL is heavily tested by users and developers all over the world since it is free of charge and open source. Ease of use. The main interaction with the MySQL server is through SQL commands which are easy to master! It is supported by PHP (more on this later). • A brief history of the software, its name and its logo from its founders at http://dev.mysql.com: “We started out with the intention of using mSQL to connect to our tables using our own fast low-level (ISAM) routines.
  • What It’s All About: Visual Basic Express Takes a Bow
  • Visual Basic Express is the only popular computer programming language available today. By popular, I mean “for the people” — novices, small-business people, amateurs — anyone other than professional programmers. VB Express is the language for the rest of us. There are far more small-business people, beginners, and enthusiasts than there are professionals, just as amateur cooks outnumber professional chefs. That’s why VB Express’s predecessor, Visual Basic, was for a decade the world’s most popular computer language by a wide margin. Small-business people need an efficient, understandable programming language to write quick utilities to solve problems unique to their work. A surfboard maker may often need to calculate polyester catalyst ratios, or dad might want to write up a quick history quiz to help with Laura’s homework. A hobbyist may enjoy creating a coin collection management program. Whatever your personal needs, knowing how to program a computer — and thus how to perfectly customize its behavior — is a useful and often enjoyable skill. • The Importance of C# Within the Microsoft .NET Framework
  • The Microsoft .NET software platform integrates various aspects of software development. In .NET applications can be written in a variety of programming languages and can be either stand-alone or web-based. A lab module for CS 453 Electronic Commerce Technologies was developed that instructs students on how to develop complex e-commerce websites using the programming language C# within the Microsoft .NET framework. This project and thesis provided insight into the power of C# and the .NET framework. Student evaluations were constructive and positive overall. There were many good suggestions for expansion of the C# lab module. The Microsoft .NET software platform integrates various aspects of software development. The .NET framework is installed on all machines that contain applications designed in the Visual Studio .NET Integrated Development Environment (IDE). This IDE allows software developers to create fully deployable applications. These applications can be written in a variety of programming languages and can be either stand-alone or web-based. The programming language C# (pronounced see-sharp) is a central language in .NET that evolved from the languages Java and C++. C# and the Microsoft .NET framework has advantages over older languages that make it worth learning. Because there is very little support for C# and the .NET framework in the University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science, few UVA students graduate with basic knowledge of this technology. This problem must be rectified so UVA graduates can be effective in the IT industry. To address this problem, in this project a lab module for CS 453
  • Guide to Writing Policy and Procedure Documents
  • Preparing a policy or procedure document for UC Santa Cruz’ InfoSlug on-line policy and procedure system is not as mysterious or difficult as you might think. This guide is designed to explain the campus’ policy and procedure framework, to help policy and procedure owners organize their written documentation, and to act as a resource as they navigate the approval process. You will find the information in this “how to” guide helpful if you are responsible for formulating or documenting new or existing policies and procedures. Over the past several years the campus has been actively examining its decision-making processes with an objective of locating decision-making authority at the lowest appropriate levels. Improvements in the campus’ process for documenting policies, procedures, and delegations of authority will enable this effort by addressing a number of issues: 1. Ease of Access. Currently there are too many manuals and loose memos—an information flood. Users don’t know what is important. Policy and procedure manuals that do exist are not always up-to-date and users cannot always find the documents they need to make informed decisions. An up-to-date, on-line system will permit those who use or are directly affected by policies and procedures to have the access they need. 2. Cost Effectiveness. Currently, individual offices must dedicate resources to maintaining files of relevant campuswide policies and procedures. Alternatively, the offices responsible for policy must respond to requests for policy documents as they are needed by individual users—using scarce human resources within those offices which might better be assigned to other
  • The Linux Public Web Browser mini?HOWTO
  • The directions below will produce the RedHat (currently version 6.2 is used, 7.0 is in development) Linux system that boots into the bare (=no window manager, like gnome, kde or fvwm2) X server and starts Netscape Navigator (not Communicator, which includes Main and News clients). Upon exiting the browser the X server is restarted and the new Netscape process is launched as needed. The system is intended for Internet Kiosks and similar applications. Security is emphasized at all the stages of the setup. This HOWTO will be updated (maybe significantly) as long as more reports about the deployment of such boxes will arrive. The basic idea here is to give web access to people who wander by, while limiting their ability to mess anything up. This setup was originally intended for trade shows, but it might be applicable other places you want to have a web browser going without having to babysit a computer. Following these instructions does not make your system bulletproof or idiot?proof. You need a graphical browser This document assumes that you already have a running graphical web browser, such as Netscape Navigator, on your system. You should have permission to use your graphical web browser. If you want to use Netscape Navigator in a commercial setting, you can buy a copy with appropriate license through Caldera. You need to be able to add an account If you don't have the right to be root, get the system administrator to add the ``guest'' account and give you ownership of guest's home directory.
  • Data Warehouse Performance: Unisys and Microsoft Achieve Record-setting Benchmark
  • Unisys and Microsoft collaborated on a proof of concept to demonstrate that the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 product suite will support even the most demanding enterprise business intelligence initiatives. The proof of concept shows that SQL Server 2005 can deliver the same or better results for a high-performance enterprise-class data warehouse than the more-costly alternatives. We delivered an optimized data warehouse solution using SQL Server 2005, SQL Server 2005 Integration Services, and SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services on a Unisys ES7000/one Enterprise Server with x64 processors. We conducted a series of tests for extraction, transformation, and load (ETL) operations and online analytical processing (OLAP) cube building. These tests measured throughput, scalability, and performance as the amount of data and execution parallelism were increased. SQL Server 2005 demonstrated the ability to use all available CPUs and memory for both the bulk data load and cube processing testing. In this proof of concept we outperformed the direct competition (Oracle-based solutions) by at least 45 percent. The test results documented in this paper prove that the SQL Server 2005 suite running on the Unisys ES7000 server can take advantage of parallelism and multiple processors to deliver extremely high rates of ETL and OLAP cube processing throughputs. Our team of 12 specialists from Unisys, Microsoft (U.S. and Germany), and Platon implemented this fully-functional data warehouse in less than three weeks. • Fiat Bravo/a & Marea - Replacing your Windscreen Washer Jets to the ‘Mist’ Type Suitable
  • This guide will show you how to fit ‘Citroën/Peugeot Windscreen Washer Mist Jets’ into your Fiat Bravo. Please read this guide through at least once before fitting. Your first step is to purchase the ‘Citroën/Peugeot Mist Washer Jets’ from the dealership. Part number 6438.V8. They come as a pair for approximately £6. Step 2. Fiat Windscreen Washer Jet Removal Open the bonnet and remove the following plastic studs to gain access to the underside of the washer jets. I have circled the main ones; you can remove more if required. Step 3. Remove existing Windscreen Washer Jets Carefully remove the washer pipe tubing from the washer jet nozzle. Then with pliers press both sides of the washer jet and push the washer jet out of the bonnet. Repeat for the next side. Step 4. Create a Support to hold the new Washer Jet in place Due to the size of the old washer jet the new Citroën washer jet will not fit perfectly into the hole in the Bravo/a and Marea’s bonnet without a support. To create the support I used an empty plastic bottle, I cut out two squares approx 4cm x 5cm from the plastic bottle and carefully with a craft knife I cut a cross in the middle. Going left to right I cut a small slit approx 3mm. Get pdf Fiat Bravo/a & Marea - Replacing your Windscreen Washer Jets to the ‘Mist’ Type Suitable
