A New Paradigm in Data Intensive Computing: Stork and the Data-Aware SchedulersThe unbounded increase in the computation and data requirements of scientific applications has necessitated the use of widely distributed compute and storage resources to meet the demand. In a widely distributed environment, data is no more locally accessible and has thus to be remotely retrieved and stored. Efficient and reliable access to data sources and archiving destinations in such an environment brings new challenges. Placing data on temporary local storage devices offers many advantages, but such “data placements” also require careful management of storage resources and data movement, i.e. allocating storage space, staging-in of input data, staging-out of generated data, and de-allocation of local storage after the data is safely stored at the destination. Traditional systems closely couple data placement and computation, and consider data placement as a side effect of computation. Data placement is either embedded in the computation and causes the computation to delay, or performed as simple scripts which do not have the privileges of a job.
The insufficiency of the traditional systems and existing CPU-oriented schedulers in dealing with the complex data handling problem has yielded a new emerging era: the data-aware schedulers. One of the first examples of such schedulers is the Stork data placement scheduler. In this paper, we will discuss the limitations of the traditional schedulers in handling the challenging data scheduling problem of large scale distributed applications; give our vision for the new paradigm in data-intensive scheduling; and elaborate on our case study: the Stork data placement scheduler. It explores the pros and cons of .Net versus J2EE for applications development and differences between C#, C++ and Java, and which one may be the best language for teaching first programming course in IS curriculum.
C# is Microsoft's latest object-oriented
programming language developed for .NET platform and .NET is Microsoft’s latest platform technology for creating web services. C# is a C++ based language and was developed to provide portability for distributed applications over network and internet. Application development in .NET platform can be done in multiple languages including C#, C++, and Visual Basic. Programs developed in all of these languages are compiled to Microsoft’s Intermediate Language (IL) and executed within Common Language Runtime (CLR). We explain the core elements of .NET and how web applications are developed and run with this technology. .NET is not a programming language; it's a virtual-machine technology (similar to Java virtual machine technology) with a framework that provides capability to run a variety of web applications. Mini-sumo is a competition between robots based on Japanese wrestling – “sumo” is the Japanese word for wrestling. Similar to traditional sumo matches, two opponents (robots) face each other in a ring named a dohyo – see Figure 1. The object is to stay in the ring while pushing the opposing robot out of the ring. The robot that stays in the ring the longest wins the match.
Mini-sumo robots are small autonomous mobile robots designed specifically for sumo style competition. The mini-sumo robot competition rules restrict the robot length and width to 10 cm x 10 cm, but do not restrict its height. In addition, the robot cannot weigh more than 500 grams. Unlike larger battle robots, mini-sumo robots are not allowed to damage the opponent robot, they are only allowed to push it off the dohyo.
All the hardware components you will need to build the robot discussed here are readily available. A mini-sumo robot can be assembled in a few hours or less.
