  • Developing WebLogic Server Applications
  • This document is written for application developers who want to build WebLogic Server e-commerce applications using the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) from Sun Microsystems. It is assumed that readers know Web technologies, object-oriented programming techniques, and the Java programming language. WebLogic Server applications are created by Java programmers, Web designers, and application assemblers. Programmers and designers create modules that implement the business and presentation logic for the application. Application assemblers assemble the modules into applications that are ready to deploy on WebLogic Server. WebLogic Server implements Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) version 1.3 technologies (http://java.sun.com/j2ee/sdk_1.3/index.html). J2EE is the standard platform for developing multi-tier Enterprise applications based on the Java programming language. The technologies that make up J2EE were developed collaboratively by Sun Microsystems and other software vendors, including BEA Systems. WebLogic Server J2EE applications are based on standardized, modular components. WebLogic Server provides a complete set of services for those modules and handles many details of application behavior automatically, without requiring programming. J2EE defines module behaviors and packaging in a generic, portable way, postponing run-time configuration until the module is actually deployed on an application server. J2EE includes deployment specifications for Web applications, EJB modules, Enterprise applications, client applications, and connectors. J2EE does not specify how an application is deployed on the target server—only how a standard module or application is packaged. For each module type, the specifications define the files required and their location in the directory structure. Note: Because J2EE is backward compatible, you can still run J2EE 1.3 applications
  • Using Cluster Analysis for Deriving Menu Structures for Automotive Mobile Multimedia Applications Paper
  • This paper describes the cluster analysis technique and how it can be used to support menu interface design for in-vehicle multimedia applications. Cluster analysis and similar types of classifying techniques have proven effective for developing simple menu interfaces. This paper extends the use of the cluster analysis technique to a more complex system that consists of 201 generic functions. These functions are representative of those being incorporated into near-term multimedia products. Study results show promise for using cluster analysis as a tool for incorporating the user’s organizational structure into the design of a complex menu architecture. Cluster analysis may also benefit the automotive menu designer by providing a means for partitioning menu tasks into chunkable units that can be easily accessed by the driver in single glances. • Focusing the Autofocus: The a Autofocus group in the first level of the Custom Settings menu contains a variety of advanced autofocus options. This chapter details options that can be used to frame moving subjects at sporting events: a1 (AF-Cpriority selection), a3 (Dynamic AF area), and a4 (Focus tracking with lock-on). These options are best used with the focus mode selector rotated to C (continuous-servo AF) and the AF-area mode selector rotated to I (dynamic-area AF). 1. Select continuous-servo AF. Rotate the focus-mode selector to C. The camera will continually adjust focus while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. 2. Select dynamic-area AF. Rotate the AF-area mode selector to I (dynamic-area AF). If the subject briefly leaves the selected focus point, the camera will focus based on information from surrounding focus points 3. Choose an option for Custom Setting a1. Choose whether the camera gives priority to focus or to shutter response in focus mode C. 4. Choose an option for Custom Setting a3. Choose the number of focus points used for dynamic-area AF. Select 9 points or 21 points for track-and-field events or for subjects that move unpredictably. • Coarse-Grain Parallel Programming in Jade
  • The goal of our research is to provide programming language support for exploiting coarse-grain concurrency, or concurrency in which each unit of serial computation executes at least several thousand instructions. There are two major reasons why automatic techniques that extract static parallelism from sequential programs cannot fully exploit available coarse-grain concurrency. First, only the programmer has the high-level knowledge necessary to decompose his program into coarse-grain tasks. This information is lost once the program is encoded in a conventional programming language. Second, it is some- times important to exploit irregular, data-dependent concurrency available only as the program runs. The large grain size often makes it possible to pro?tably amortize the dynamic overhead required to exploit this last source of concurrency. Download pdf Coarse-Grain Parallel Programming in Jade
  • Using Microsoft Active Directory Group Policy with Diskeeper
  • Diskeeper can be administered network-wide via several different methods. The primary network administration tool for Diskeeper is Diskeeper Administrator Edition, a single point of control for all your Diskeeper administration needs. However, sites using Microsoft Group Policy can use the Diskeeper.adm administrative template file available from Executive Software to control many aspects of Diskeeper operation through Group Policy. The Diskeeper.adm template file is available free of charge from the Executive Software web site at www.executive.com/diskeeper/grouppolicy.asp. Active Directory Users and Computers and the Group Policy Editor are the desktop tools used to administer Group Policy on your network. When the Diskeeper template is installed, these tools will allow you to configure Diskeeper options such as scheduling, defragmentation methods and defragmentation priority. Note: This section assumes you have a certain level of experience using the Group Policy Editor. Refer to the Microsoft Group Policy documentation for complete information about using the Group Policy Editor. 1. To open Active Directory Users and Computers, click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Users and Computers. • XBMC-Python Scripting Tutorial
  • Welcome to the Python for XBMC Tutorial! This project began one day when I discovered XBMC (XBox Media Center) supports scripts written in Python. Darkie made the port, and I’d like to thank him for his great work and support! (I harassed him with questions and feature suggestions and he was always nice enough to reply to the questions and to add the features.) Curious, I decided to try to use this scripting language to display some basic stuff. Before I could begin writing for the XBox, I spent many hours learning the Python language (and, in the process, the snake bit me ;), and reading through all the documentation included in the Windows port. Once I’d finished that, I started to code some very basic scripts. I learned XBMC Python through a lot of trial and error. Now I feel more comfortable coding for the XBox, and so I decided to share my experience. In order to script for the XBox, you’ll obviously need Python installed with XBMC. Most XBMC releases include a python.rar file containing the necessary scripts. (Some full-scale releases come with Python already included in the main installation.) So unrar the Python file if you need to, and you'll have two folders: “python” and “scripts.” Place both of these in XBMC’s root directory. Note that features are always being added, so we really advise you to have the last version of XBMC and of Python, otherwise scripts written using newer versions may not work with your installation. • IS Support for Web 2.0 Services – the Next Steps
  • The web is changing from being essentially a unidirectional publishing medium to one which supports multiparty content creation and collaboration – a change which provides both rich opportunities and challenges. The use of blogs, wikis, media-sharing services and other social software has been shown to empower both staff and students and to create exciting new learning opportunities. Examples include the use of blogs to allow students to share and reflect on learning, and to allow researchers to share knowledge, exchange ideas and easily publish work. Wikis provide a collaborative, easy to use content authoring tool for students, researchers and support staff. Social bookmarking services have introduced user defined tags, facilitating shared resource identification, while virtual worlds like Second Life have introduced new possibilities for social networking among distance students, and unique opportunities for the development of innovative pedagogies. We have now had two reports on Web 2.0 in the University: an initial report which proposed one way forward, and a second report following an extensive consultation effort, which improved our understanding of user concerns in this area, as well as raising the profile of Web 2.0 in the user community. Our extensive preparatory work in this area is recognised as unique in a JISC report on Web 2.0 in learning and teaching. Now the IS Strategic Management Group has decided that Information Services should start implementing what’s been discussed. This paper makes the vision of what we’re trying to achieve more explicit, and outlines necessary steps towards its realization. Download pdf IS
