The idea behind CORBA is to model distributed resources as objects that provide a well-defined interface, and to invoke services through remote invocations (RPCs). Since the transfer syntax for sending messages to objects is strictly defined, it is possible to exchange requests and replies between processes running program written in arbitrary programming languages and hosted on arbitrary hardware and operating systems. Target addresses are represented as Interoperable Object References (IORs), which contain transport addresses as well as identifiers needed to dispatch incoming messages to implementations.

With the rise of model-driven development, model repositories are intended to facilitate research in model engineering and consequently in domain-specific modeling. Model repositories are central places where all kinds of modeling artifacts (e.g., meta-metamodels, metamodels, models, and possibly transformation models) are stored and coordinated. They can serve as a platform for making available the specification of metamodels to others (typically necessary for domain-specific modeling languages) and for exchanging models, as well as a resource for teaching/learning materials.

Reliable computer systems used in the telecommunication industry, in cars and automated factories (process control) are often implemented as special purpose systems which are vendor-specific, expensive, hard to maintain and difficult to upgrade. Often, those systems apply proprietary techniques to achieve security and predictable timing behavior, even in case of faults. With the need of integrating multiple of those control systems into a bigger whole, requirements arise to open up proprietary systems for standard (non real-time) distributed computing technology.

The Microsoft .NET framework is a reliable, Internet-focused, and secure software development platform. Microsoft .NET is composed of a unique bundle of features:
• An easy-to-use integrated development environment (IDE)
• A suite of .NET interoperable object-oriented programming languages, including C#
• A Common Language Infrastructure (CLI), which enables .NET language interoperability
Objectivity/.NET for C# is a .NET programming interface for Objectivity/DB.
