  • Using Microsoft Visual Basic to Create a Graphical Front-End for a CSIM19 Model
  • This document describes how to use Microsoft Visual Basic to quickly and easily create a graphical front-end for a CSIM19 simulation written in C. The example used in this document is a simple service center phone bank. The source for this example is included with this document. You will not be able to compile the source yourself unless you own the CSIM19 libraries. This document assumes that readers are reasonably familiar with CSIM19 and basically proficient in Microsoft Visual Basic and Microsoft Visual C++. Obviously the methods described here are also applicable in other development environments, as long as users know their preferred development tools well enough. The first step in this process is to create your CSIM model as you would normally. In our example, the model was first written and compiled as a standard Win32 console application using Microsoft Visual C++ 6. The original console program is included in this tutorial package and is called phone.exe. In this stage it is easy to find and fix all the bugs in the model itself without worrying about problems anywhere else. It is important to verify that the model gives the correct output at this stage, so that it will be easier to catch any bugs in the GUI later. At this point we can design the Visual Basic interface. For our simple example, the program only really needs one, single form. In the source project there are two forms, but one is simply a home-made help screen. All the user needs
  • Modeling a dragon with NURBS in Maya
  • This piece of article will show you step by step of how the dragon is created using Maya. There are three type of modeling method in Maya, NURBS modeling, Subdivision modeling and Polygon modeling, each of them have their advantages and disadvantages. However we will build the dragon using patch NURBS surface techniques. The tools that I use to model this dragon are Birail tools, NURBS primitive, Fillet Blend Tools and etc. In the first section, I will show you how the dragon is created by using Maya. Next section, texturing the dragon will be shown. We need to paint the texture and create bump map in PhotoShop, but before that, I will need Deep Paint 3D to create reference line on how the texture will be distorted by NURBS. The detail will be covered in the texturing section. Before I start launching Maya, I will do some concept sketching on paper. This is important, as it will be easier for me to visualise the object I have in mind later on. I wanted to create a dragon between realistic and imaginative. I want it to look like a T-Rex but with horn and larger forelimbs. Only the side orthographic is needed to create the model. When I have done, I will scan in the sketch and save it as JPEG. • Disaster Recovery Procedures for Microsoft SQL 2000 and 2005 using N series
  • This IBM® Redpaper gives a example of procedures to restore the Microsoft® SQL 2000 and 2005 using SnapManager®.There are options discussed that depend on the type of disaster, the type of data recovery, and the type of system on which the disaster applies. Recovering a snapshot with SnapManager for SQL The process to restore a SQL database requires DBA skills and knowledge of the SnapManager product. In the SnapManager Administration guide several restore options are described, followed by a step-by-step instruction. This paper does not describe those steps. Restoring a snapshot with SnapManager In this section we discuss the steps taken in a test scenario as executed during a disaster recovery test. Log on to the SQL server (in this case SQL2000 PDC1DB005) with SA_snapdrive and start Enterprise Manager for SQL. 1. Select properties of the database that you want to restore. 2. Set the database in single user mode. 3. Close Enterprise Manager. 4. Stop the (remote) services that connect to the database. Use the process information of SQL Enterprise Manager to find active processes. 5. Start SnapManager for SQL. Depending on what database you must restore (and the sort of backups taken for that database), the procedure may differ. • The User Model and Context Ontology GUMO revisited for future Web 2.0 Extensions
  • We revisit the top-level ontology Gumo for the uniform management of user and context models in a semantic web environment. We discuss design decisions, while putting the focus on ontological issues. The structural integration into user model servers, especially into the U2M-UserModel&ContextService, is also presented. We show ubiquitous applications using the user model ontology Gumo together with the user model markup language UserML. Finally, we ask how data from Web 2.0 and especially from a social tagging application like del.icio.us as a basis for user adaptation and context-awareness could influence the ontology A commonly accepted top level ontology for user and context models is of great importance for the user modeling and context research community. This ontology should be represented in a modern semantic web language like OWL and thus be available for all user-adaptive systems at the same time via internet. The major advantage would be the simplification for exchanging user model and context data between different user-adaptive systems. However, the current trends of web 2.0 and social computing tell us that the users like to create their own tag spaces, naming conventions and taxonomies. The masses of tagging, rating and even blogging define a kind of ”wisdom of the crowds”. Now the question arises how this new bottom-up approach can be combined with the more top-down approach of ontology engineering. Does a revisiting of a domain ontology like the user model and context ontology GUMO make sense? There are two directions of mutual influence possible. An existing ontology could be

  • Google Data APIs Protocol (GData Module)
  • This proposal aims to create a module that implements the GData protocol specification in Drupal. The Google data APIs provide a simple standard protocol, called "GData", for reading and writing data on the web using either of two standard XML-based syndication formats: Atom or RSS. This module will handle all the basic stuff a developer shouldn't have to worry about when developing modules that extend its functionality such as data transfer, protocol adherence, and authentication. It will expose its own API which will allow other developers to create modules that easily interact with information provided by Google's many service APIs. Using this module, module developers who need access to this information need only concern themselves with what's important: the data. This module will benefit Drupal by providing developers with an easy way to interact with information provided by Google's many service APIs without worrying about all the behind-the-scenes stuff that goes into accessing and modifying that information. This opens up a world of possibilities for integrating Google applications into Drupal. Some ideas that could be more easily implemented using the API provided by a GData module include, but are not limited to, the following: • Using Gooogle's Apps API to integrate various Google applications into Drupal, allowing it to be a competitor with other online groupware suites such as Microsoft SharePoint. • Integrating Google Base Data into dynamic Drupal applications using Google's Base Data API. • Creating a Drupal front-end to Google's Blogger service through its Blogger Data API, allowing for the administration of
