  • Modern object-oriented programming languages like Java or C# support multithreaded programming. They allow several threads to run concurrently sharing objects on the heap in the same address space. Each thread has its own frame stack, program counter, local variables and registers. The languages have special syntactical constructs for synchronization. Java has a synchronized statement and synchronized methods, while C# has a lock statement and several attributes that can be applied to classes and methods to control their run-time synchronization behavior. Although the C# programming languages supports multi-threaded programming directly via special syntax, the underlying thread model is poorly documented and still considered to be part of the library. The Ecma standards for C# [4] and the Common Language Infrastructure [5] contain only a few paragraphs about threads. For example, the lock statement is defined in by a reduction to the library functions Monitor.Enter and Monitor.Exit which are not further specified there. Important issues, such as the order of writes to volatile and non-volatile fields, are just briefly mentioned in two paragraphs in. Hence, a program developer has to rely solely on the class library documentation that comes with Microsoft’s .NET framework Software Development Kit. Unfortunately, that documentation is not very precise with respect to threads, locks and memory issues.   • As part of a large undergraduate history course he teaches about World War II, Dr. Martinez developed a mapping mashup that he introduces to the 150 students at the beginning of the semester. The mashup, which works with Google maps, represents major events leading up to and during the war. Fundamentally, it’s a map, he explains, showing them on a projection screen that it works very much like the online mapping tools students regularly use. The map covers virtually the entire globe, and users can move around the world, zooming in and out, showing the area of search as a map, satellite images, or satellite images with maps, dates, and events superimposed. When students zoom in on Europe, they see flags scattered around the continent and into Asia. Similar maps dot Japan, Southeast Asia, and the South Pacific. When clicked, each flag opens a pop-up box that names the location, explains what happened there and when, and shows a photograph of that site at or close to the date in question. Flags correspond to important battles, political events, treaties that were signed, and cities such as Vichy, the wartime capital of France. The text in the box also includes links to articles that talk in depth about what took place in each location and the significance of that event. Do you really want to contribute yet another authorization stovepipe to the growing forest? We all curse the proliferation of authentication and authorization “solutions” on the Web. Yet we continue to treat access control as an after thought. Developers accept the benefits of adopting third-party solutions for common functions such as data storage, cryptography, numerical analysis, parsing, etc., yet continue to roll their own application access control solutions. Why? The disadvantages of RYO are obvious: application-specific user accounts and passwords proliferate, each application reinvents how roles should be implemented -- perhaps even a language for specifying access constraints -- and, if integration with an external authentication framework is required, each application must implement interfaces to the drivers. This is irritating to our users, a headache for those who administer the applications, and costly to maintain. In this article we develop a set of Web 2.0 best practices for “outsourcing” the access control problem.
