These applications use high-speed networks to in- tegrate supercomputers, large databases, archival storage devices, advanced visualiza- tion devices, and/or scienti?c instruments to form networked virtual supercomputers or metacomputers. While the physical infrastructure to build such systems is becoming widespread, the heterogeneous and dynamic nature of the metacomputing environment poses new challenges for developers of system software, parallel tools, and applications. In this article, we introduce Globus, a system that we are developing to address these challenges. The Globus system is intended to achieve a vertically integrated treatment of application, middleware, and network. A low level toolkit provides basic mechanisms such as communication, authentication, network information, and data access. These mechanisms are used to construct various higher-level metacomputing services, such as parallel programming tools and schedulers. Our long-term goal is to build an Adaptive Wide Area Resource Environment (AWARE), an integrated set of higher-level services that enable applications to adapt to heterogeneous and dynamically changing meta- computing environments.   • In 1980 FIAT introduced a Bosch multiport fuel injection system in its vehicles. Introduced first on California-bound vehicles and, by 1981, on all U.S. vehicles, the Bosch system improved the performance, efficiency, reliability, and quality of engine operations. Solely responsible for a 23 horsepower increase on the 2 liter engines, this system, known as Bosch L-Jetronic, was popular not only on FIATs but on nearly every European car produced in the 1980's. The L-Jetronic was the first mass-produced, fully electronic fuel injection system. Prior to L-Jetronic, mechanical fuel injection systems had proven that directly injecting atomized fuel into the cylinder resulted in better engine operation. Combining this direct injection theory with electronic sensors, valves, and meters - all controlled by a central computer - resulted in better operation than before. The basic operation is straightforward. An engine is basically an air pump, drawing mixed fuel and air into the intake manifold, compressing it (followed by a spark-triggered explosion), and expelling it through the exhaust manifold. In a fuel injection system the entire operation is based on the amount of air entering the system. The engine pulls air through an air filter and into an air flow meter. The air flow meter measures the amount of air entering the system. Once measured, the air flows into a large hose that is connected to the intake manifold (a plenum).   • A living cell can be viewed as a dynamical system in which a large number of different substances react continuously and non-linearly with one another. In order to understand the behavior of a continuous non-linear dynamical system with numerous interacting parts, it is usually insufficient to study behavior of each part in isolation. Instead, the behavior must usually be analyzed as a whole (Tomita et al., 1999). Considerable amounts of time-domain data are now becoming available concerning the concentration of biologically important chemicals in living organisms. Such data include both gene expression data (obtained from microarrays) and data on the concentration of substances participating in metabolic pathways (Ptashne, 1992; McAdams and Shapiro, 1995; Loomis and Sternberg, 1995; Arkin et al., 1997; Yuh et al., 1998; Liang et al., 1998; Mendes and Kell, 1998; D’haeseleer et al., 1999). The concentrations of substrates, products, and catalysts (e.g., enzymes) participating in chemical reactions are modeled by non-linear continuous-time differential equations, such as the Michaelis-Menten equations (Voit, 2000). The question arises as to whether it is possible to start with observed time-domain concentrations of substances and automatically create both the topology of the network of chemical reactions and the rates of each reaction that produced the observed data — that is, to automatically reverse engineer the network from the data. Genetic programming (Koza et al., 1999a) is a method for automatically creating a computer program whose behavior satisfies certain high-level requirements. Recent work has demonstrated that genetic programming can automatically create complex networks that exhibit prespecified behavior
