  • An investigation into teaching introductory programming to physics undergraduates
  • The pedagogy of physics education has become the focus of increasing research. This project has applied such research to focus on the issue of introductory computer programming for physics students. It is concluded that teaching programming is both necessary and beneficial for physics students and may improve their performance on their degree. The choice of programming language for an introductory course is considered, and the Python programming language is selected. Questionnaire results from physics and engineering introductory courses are presented, and conclusions drawn from these results. The report finishes by presenting best practice suggestions to improve the enthusiasm and retention of material by the students. As early as 1979 it was pointed out by Lemos [1] that there was a lack of structure in the approach to teaching programming; with many different methods used and no empirical research to distinguish which was most helpful for the student. Lemos stated that most of the literature consists of subjective opinions on the most effective methods of instruction for a given programming language and called for dedicated research in this field. In the intervening years some work has been done in this field, however as will be seen in section 2.1 there is still a distinct lack of empirical research. The introductory computational physics course is a compulsory part of the second year physics laboratory module at the University of Southampton, and comprises 6 laboratory sessions over a three week period. It is an introductory programming course and introduction to numerical methods and other techniques,
  • SSH tips, tricks & protocol tutorial
  • SSH (Secure SHell) is a network protocol which provides a replacement for insecure remote login and command execution facilities, such as telnet, rlogin and rsh. SSH encrypts traffic in both directions, preventing traffic sniffing and password theft. SSH also offers several additional useful features: • Compression: traffic may be optionally compressed at the stream level. • Public key authentication: optionally replacing password authentication. • Authentication of the server: making ”man-in-the-middle” attack more difficult • Port forwarding: arbitrary TCP sessions can be forwarded over an SSH connection. • X11 forwarding: SSH can forward your X11 sessions too. • File transfer: the SSH protocol family includes two file transfer protocols. SSH was created by Tatu Ylonen in 1995 and was at first released under an open-source license. Later versions were to bear increasing restrictive licenses, though they generally remained free for non-commercial use. He went on to form SSH Communications security which sells commercial SSH implementations to this day. The earlier versions of his code implement what is now referred to as SSH protocol v.1. In 1997 a process began to make the SSH protocols Internet standards under the auspices of the IETF. This lead to the development of version 2 of the SSH protocol. In the rewrite, the protocol was split into a transport layer, and connection and authentication protocols. Several security issues were also addressed as part of this process. • Howto: UniCluster & Amazon EC2
  • BioTeam first became interested in Univa UD’s software efforts after hearing Univa CTO Steve Tueckespeak in Regensburg, Germany at the 2007 Grid Engine workshop. Shortly after that event Univa formally became Univa UD after merging with United Devices. At the time, Steve’s company seemed to be one of the few companies positioning themselves to offer full support and professional services encompassing commonly used open source products such as Sun Grid Engine that BioTeam often works with in the field. Individually these popular open source resources are relatively easy to acquire but Univa UD seemed to be making an interesting effort to become the one stop shop for a fully supported and integrated set of commonly required tools and technology. One outcome of the new Univa UD is the UniCluster Express effort. UniCluster Express is a cluster tool-stack capable of deploying fully configured and integrated set of technologies including Grid Engine 6.1, Grid Engine Analysis & Reporting Console (“ARCo”), Ganglia, central monitoring console and (incredibly) a fully operational Globus grid computing infrastructure. It itself is fully open-sourced. All of these technologies, of course, are independently available and can be deployed by anyone with sufficient motivation and time. The ease of deployment for these technologies runs the full range: easy (Ganglia) -- moderate (Grid Engine & ARCo) -- very complex (Globus stack) so one very real value of UniCluster is the ability to deploy all of these technologies, simultaneously, in a fully integrated and supported manner. Of significant note is that Univa UD plans to
  • Program in ArcGIS using the .Net framework and C#
  • This guide assumes that the reader has a basic understanding of what ArcGIS and the .Net framework is, as well as a rudimentary understanding of how object oriented programming works. For more information about .Net and object oriented programming, follow the links in Appendix B. In order to program with ArcGIS there are two products that you will need to have installed on your computer. First, you must have either ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS ArcInfo or else have the ArcGIS Engine installed. Once these one of these are installed you will be able to run the code you compile in the ArcGIS environment. The other ArcGIS product you need is the Developer Tools for Microsoft.Net that provides access to the .Net framework and the functions that ESRI has made for .Net as well as the Developer tools that install an API for ArcObjects. It is also important to make sure that your software is up to date, which you can do by checking the ESRI website to see if there are updates or service packs for your software (this tutorial was written using ArcGIS 9.2 Service Pack1). The other major required software is a C#.Net compiler. I recommend using Microsoft Visual Studio, because ESRI has created various resources to make coding faster and easier for that environment. If you are looking for a free compiler you can try using the Microsoft Visual Studio C# Express edition, or the SharpDevelop program which is an open-source initiative. Links to these programs are provided in Appendix

  • MySQL Support White Paper
  • MySQL is a Relational Database Management System. A relational database adds speed and flexibility, by storing data in separate tables rather than putting all the data in one area. These tables are linked by defined relations making it possible to combine data fromseveral tables upon request. Using a RDMS means it is possible to add, access, and process the data stored in your database. ‘SQL’ stands for "Structured Query Language" - the most common standardised language used to access databases. MySQL is Open Source software and is freely available at www.mysql.com. Open Source software means that the source code can easily be manipulated and modified by anyone. It is very simple to use. Why use MySQL? MySQL is very fast, reliable, and easy to use. MySQL also has a very practical set of features developed in close cooperation with its users. It is also Open Source and therefore freely accessible. MySQL is used to access databases on the internet due to its connectivity, speed and security. It was originally developed to manage large databases at a much faster speed than the solutions that previously existed. MySQL has for several years, been thriving in the challenging areas of production. Download pdf MySQL Support White Paper

  • In addition to Canvas’numerous import and export capabilities, you can also import AutoCAD 2007 files into Canvas 11, edit them, and export to PDF format. Objectives After this exercise you will be able to: » Import a DWG file » Export as PDF » Add symbols to a document » Create dimensions Required knowledge to perform this exercise: » Open or place files » Move an object » Draw or place an object » Understand the use of dimensions in CAD design STEP1: IMPORTINGDWGFILES First choose File > Open and select DWG for Files of type. Click Open and the DWG & DXF Import dialog box opens. The first going to Open and select the DWG file, but first on Files of type select DWG - AutoCAD® native files, then a new palette window call DWG & DXF Import will open. A common scale used in CAD drawing is ¼”=1’, so we need to setup at this scale. Note: If you don’t want to set the drawing scale upon import, you can also use Canvas’ various scaling methods after import. Download pdf IMPORTING AND EXPORTING AutoCAD FILES (DWG)
