The Art of Unix Programming Teaching GuideThe Art Of Unix Programming (TAOUP) was written primarily to be used as a self-education tool for professional or enthusiatic amateur programmers. It was not designed to be a course textbook, but it may usefully be employed as one. This instructional guide is intended to help.
TAOUP is different from the general run of Unix tutorials, which tend to concentrate on the level of basic shell usage, application programming interfaces and other relatively low-level issues. TAOUP very deliberately focuses at a higher level: design principles, style, and the history that has informed both. It is not a replacement for an introductory UNIX textbook, but a valuable complement to same.
TAOUP could be appropriate in at least three different contexts:
• Courses on the Unix operating system. TAOUP is appropriate as a core text in a course on Unix, especially one oriented toward programmers (as opposed to, say, training system administrators).
• Intermediate-to-advanced courses on software engineering. The problems of complexity control in larger software systems, and the lesson Unix experience teaches about that control, are a core theme of the book.
• Courses on the history of computing. The material is presented in a historical frame, with an emphasis on technology as a human activity. The evolution of Unix makes an interesting lens through which to examine interactions between technology, economics, and subcultural history.

Design is the process by which products are created and modified. For many years designers sought ways to describe and analyze three-dimensional designs without building physical models. Although orthographic projections can be used to provide much of the information, they still require designers to translate between the three-dimensional object and flat two-dimensional views. With the advancements in computer technology, the creation of three-dimensional models on computers offers a wide range of benefits. Computer models are easier to interpret and can be altered easily. Computer models can be analyzed using finite element analysis software, and simulation of real-life loads can be applied to the computer models and the results graphically displayed.
There are three basic types of three-dimensional computer geometric modeling methods: wireframe modeling, surface modeling and solid modeling. The 3-D wireframe models contain information about the locations of all the points and edges in space coordinates. The 3-D models can be viewed from any direction as needed and are reasonably good representations of 3-D objects. But because surface definition is not part of a wireframe model, all wireframe images have the inherent problem of ambiguity.

Surface modeling was developed to provide the surface information that is missing in wireframe modeling. Essentially, defining the skin of a design creates a surface model. Although it is possible to create a surface model without using a wireframe model, in most cases it is much easier to create a surface model on top of a wireframe model. In surface modeling, a wireframe model can be used to provide information about the edges and corners so that the desired faces can be easily positioned and placed.
Surface modeling is more sophisticated than wireframe modeling in that surface modelers define not only the edges of 3D objects, but also the surfaces. Surface modeling provides hiding, shading, and rendering capabilities that are not available in wireframe modeling. Surface models do not provide the physical properties that solid models provide, such as mass, weight, center of gravity, and so on.
The AutoCAD surface modeler defines faceted surfaces using a filled polygon. The created faces of surface models are only planar, which means the surface models can only have approximate curved surfaces. It is important to note that the AutoCAD surface modeler does not create true curved surfaces. To differentiate these two types of surfaces, faceted surfaces are called meshes in AutoCAD. Because of the use of faceted approximation on true curved surfaces, the computer requirements ofWeb Services – An Integral Element of Oecd's dot.STAT Technology Framework for Statistical ApplicationsThe combination of evolving ICT standards that increase the interoperability between applications and the ever-increasing need for a more seamless access to and exchange of information is a major driver in the OECD ICT strategy. This paper describes the role and use of web services in the context of recent developments at the OECD to improve the accessibility of statistical information. It follows up on a paper presented at the 2002 ISIS meeting about “Improving Access to Statistical Information at OECD in Response to Users’ Requirements” and describes a technology framework – called “dot.STAT” – that has been devised for the implementation of applications that enable easy access to certain OECD reference data. The concepts outlined in this paper have been developed in close collaboration with the Statistics Directorate, specialised OECD-internal groups and task forces 2, as well as members of the SDMX Consortium3.
The dot.STAT development framework is designed to help implement the basic infrastructure for the new OECD Statistical Information System. It incorporates a central data warehouse and is part of a broader statistical strategy, which depends on a glossary of statistical terms and a corporate meta-data repository.
The objectives of the dot.STAT framework are threefold. The first aim is to offer a single platform/repository for multiple data/meta-data sets with different characteristics. Secondly it comprises a complete set of information broker tools to make replication from working/production databases as transparent and simple as possible. Thirdly, the architecture aims to offer basic building blocks for the (re)development of statistical production systemsGetting Start OJBThis document will guide you through the very first steps of setting up a project with OJB. To make this easier, OJB comes with a blank project template called ojb-blank which you're encouraged to use. You can download it here. For the purpose of this guide, we'll be showing you how to setup the project for a simple application that handles products and uses MySQL. This is continued later on in the next tutorial parts.
First off, OJB uses Ant to build, so please install it prior to using OJB. In addition, please make sure that the environment variables ANT_HOME and JAVA_HOME are correctly set to the top-level folders of your Ant distribution and your JDK installation, respectively. Next download the latest ojb-blank and OJB binary distributions. You can also start with the source distribution rather than the binary as the unit tests provide excellent sample code and you can build the ojb-blank project on your own with it.
The ojb-blank project contains all libraries necessary to get running. However, there may be additional libraries required when you venture deeper into OJB's APIs. See here for a list of additional libraries. Most notably, you'll probably want to add the jdbc driver for you database unless you plan to use the embedded Hsqldb database for which the ojb-blank project is pre-configured (including all necessary jars).
