  • Astigmatism is a very common focussing error of the eyes which causes blur. It is caused by the shape of the eye, usually due to the cornea’s surface or occasionally due to the eye’s lens being tilted. Sometimes astigmatism can be inherited but it often happens as a normal characteristic of growth. Blur from astigmatism is not like that from myopia where all of an image is equally blurred, because some parts of the image are more out of focus than others. If you look at the line diagrams, you can see the effect of astigmatism by tilting the tip the page down and facing away from you the lines running across the page are less distinct than those running away from you. The blur of astigmatism makes things uncomfortable to look at, difficult to focus and may cause headaches, tiredness and poor concentration. What about tired eyes? Astigmatism can also result in fatigued eyes, especially if you are concentrating on anything for a long period of time, whether looking up close (for example, studying or computer use) or in the distance (for example, driving).   • ViPEr, a Visual Programming Environment for Python
  • In this paper we describe a Python- and Tkinter-based visual-programming environment called ViPEr. This tool enables non-programmers to build computational and visualization networks interactively. Computational nodes can be placed onto a canvas and their input and output ports can be connected using the mouse. The connections between the nodes define a directed graph that will be used to propagate data and trigger the execution of nodes that have new input data. ViPEr is, in appearance, similar to programs such as AVS [Upson et al. 89] from Advanced Visual Simulations Inc, or OpenDX [DX 93] from IBM, but presents some fundamental differences which will be pointed out throughout this paper. Several examples of applications will be used to illustrate ViPEr’s design and current range of capabilities. The focus of our laboratory is the modelisation of molecular interactions. We are working on several aspects of this problem, including molecular visualization, protein-ligand docking, protein- protein docking, molecular surfaces, phenomenological potentials, etc. The methods we use in our models come from fields as diverse as computational chemistry and biology, computational geometry and augmented reality. We have been using Python as a platform to develop re-usable and inter- operable components dealing with different aspects of structural bioinformatics [Sanner 99a, Coon et al. 01, Python at TSRI]. These components are the basic building blocks from which several domain specific applications have been developed. These include a generic molecule visualization program (PMV [Sanner 99a, Coon et al. 01]), a viewer for volumetric data (PVV) and a graphical user

  • Extensible Markup Language (‘XML’) is a standard for describing content data in a manner that facilitates the sharing of such content across different systems and applications. Over the last 10 years, the XML standard has been adopted across a wide range of environments in the IT industry. Microsoft is one of many companies that is re-aligning its existing product range to take advantage of the flexibility of XML. One of its current initiatives is the standardization of the Office Open XML File Formats (‘File Formats’).This paper reviews the standardisation process that Microsoft has embarked upon and examines Microsoft’s legal arrangements related to intellectual property associated with the File Formats and the manner in which that legal treatment interacts with other products currently on the market. This paper seeks to address and we hope to clarify any misunderstandings that may exist in the industry, among policymakers and the wider general public, about both the standardisation process and the legal arrangements governing implementation of the File Formats by others.   • This paper presents the results of a study on the leverage of web 2.0 technology and open business models to expand service providers’ IMS and SDP (Service Delivery Platform) and offer new services and service composition capabilities for existing business partners such as MVNO, ISV, ASPs but also sophisticated end users, so called “prosumers”. We have collected the requirements from different users and customers which were all converging to an expansion of existing environment to offer a much more ‘internet’ like service offering : simple APIs, mix of content and communication capabilities, graphical composition tools, open portal, widgets, developer communities, easy to share, try and comment set of services, etc. Based on that, we did an evaluation of different tools and technology and defined an architecture that could meet these expectations while leveraging existing IMS-SDP environments and built a proof of concept. From Walled Garden to Long Tail … Today most service providers offer a mix of ‘walled garden’ services such as voice and SMS, which are developed/hosted/sold by the service provider, and ‘partner services’ which are co-developed and sold via some cross-selling models between the service provider and some business partners. As the market evolves with, on one side, more demand on the consumer side for personalized content and internet integration, and on the other side, demand for more flexible and dynamic business relationships, service providers need to explore new technologies and new business models to basically open up their infrastructure to enable more innovation and more usage of the underlying
