Text in Courier is reserved for terminal sessions. This provides a sample walkthrough of commands to type and their usual responses. For example: A larger courier font is used to denote relevant commands mid-sentence, such as newconfig, in order to separate the command from the rest of the text. File and path names, such as /etc/inittab, are in bold. Individual references to filenames without paths like inittab aren’t.
Note:
The famous Mac Bomb symbol is used to denote a tip or note. Small notes like these provide hints and tips as well as insight drawn from bitter experience.
Make sure you read them!
One small point; there are many instances where command lines are preceded by either a # or $ symbol. The # refers to the root user and the $ symbol refers to a regular user. In either case, don’t type the symbol. To make matters even more confusing, most of the configuration files used in this guide use leading # symbols to define comments. It’s confusing but it’s the UNIX convention, not ours. Don’t worry, you’ll get used to it.

The application, called SystemBrowser, works a little like Windows Explorer: it displays folders and files, as shown in the next figure.
What is EventBased Programming?
Before diving into the design and implementation of SystemBrowser, let’s back up for a second to discuss what EBP is, why it is appealing and how it allows us to control coupling. In a nutshell, EBP is a way to design a software system using events and event notifications to connect the major parts together. The advantage of this approach, over traditional call?any?object?you?need designs, is lower coupling. In many cases you eliminate static coupling between parts, making it possible to test those parts in isolation, using a test fixture.
I’ve barely begun and I’ve already introduced a couple of expressions that deserve explaining. What does parts mean in the previous sentence? I use this word to refer generically to classes, objects and assemblies. And what is static coupling. Unless you’re read other material of mine discussing coupling, you’re probably unfamiliar with the expression. Also, if there is something called static coupling, you might guess that there is something called dynamic coupling. You’d be right.

It is aimed at upper-level undergraduate students and beginning graduate students with some experience in procedural and OO programming. Functional programming experience is claimed to be helpful but non-essential. As a teaching text, it competes with a similarly-named book by Sebesta, a book by (Wilson and) Clark, and others.
Like most books in this area, it is mostly organised by concept (rather than by language), with a (here, relatively short) history of programming languages at the beginning. The “foundational” chapters are then concerned with computability, Lisp, syntax, semantics and functional programming. Next, a number of chapters deal with the traditional concepts in procedural languages, followed by a third section on object-oriented programming. The final chapters, as usual in texts in this area, deal with concurrency and logic programming (the latter chapter is by Krzystof Apt). As one might have expected from the author, this book is an extremely rich source of important information, subtle issues, and diverse and challenging exercises. This makes it an excellent text for further reading. As an introductory text, however, it is less suitable. This is mostly due to structuring and content, and partially to bias.
As an example of problems with structure and content, consider (parametric) polymorphism. Chapter 5 uses the ML “length” function as an example (without giving its type), and mentions polymorphism four pages later as a subject to be covered in Chapter 6.
