1 Working by Hand
There are two main ways to work with a database. First, we will show how to work with it by hand. Second, we will show how to work with it from another program. In the long run, you will do most of your database work using another program that you will write, such as a CGI program. When you are debugging, or when you are doing one-time kinds of things like creating tables, working by hand can be a good solution.
1.1 Connect to the MySQL Server
Use this command (e.g., from cs.byuh.edu) to connect to MySQL.
mysql -p -h HHH -u UUU
Replace HHH with the host name. Replace UUU with your own username. When you are prompted for a password, type it in. Your instructor should tell you your hostname, username, and password. You will change your password later.
The -p tells mysql to prompt you for a password.
The -h tells mysql to what hostname to connect to.
The -u tells mysql what username to use.
1.2 How To Quit
Once you have successfully connected to the mysql server, you should see the following prompt:

We're going to look at some useful PHP functions that should make your life a lot easier. First, let's look at include files.
We all know the basics of includes, right? Contents of an external file are referenced and imported into the main file. It's pretty easy: You call a file and it's included. When we do this in PHP there are two functions we need to talk about: include() and require(). The difference between these two functions is subtle but important, so let's take a closer look. The require() function works in a XSSI-like way; files are included as part of the original document as soon as that file is parsed, regardless of its location in the script. So if you decide to place a require() function inside a conditional loop, the external file will be included even if that part of the conditional loop is false.
The include() function imports the referenced file each time it is encountered. If it's not encountered, PHP won't bother with it.
This means that you can use include in loops and conditional statements, and they'll work exactly as planned.
Finally, if you use require() and the file you're including does not exist, your script will halt and produce an error. For relatively short-life structures, the need is addressed simply by planning ahead and carrying out a test plan that replicates the intended service conditions. This is feasible for structures whose design life might be as much as a year or even five years, but it is not very practical for structures for which the life expectancy is 10 years or more.
Since the early 1950s, the analyses of long time, high temperature data for aluminum alloys, ferrous metals and superalloys (1-4), has been addressed through the use of time-temperature parametric equations that permit the consolidation of data obtained over a variety of temperatures and exposure times into a single relationship. Once such relationships are established based upon the available experimental data and optimized, it is possible to extrapolate to service conditions substantially beyond the range of the test data themselves. This must always be done cautiously and with awareness of the extent of the extrapolation, but it provides a better perspective than simply extrapolating individual strength life curves.
Within the scope of this paper, the authors will briefly review the background for and the application of the most widely used time-temperature parameter, the Larson-Miller Parameter (LMP) plus, more importantly, demonstrate that there is value in the application of such parameters to types of dataWriting CGI scripts in TclCGI scripts enable dynamic generation of HTML pages. CGI scripts can run programs, include and process data, and just about anything that can be done in traditional programs.
CGI scripts are particularly worthwhile in handling Web forms. Web forms allow users to enter data into a page and then send the results to a Web server for processing. The Web form itself does not have to be generated by a CGI script. However, data entered by a user may require a customized response.
