Surely it can’t be that difficult? Actually there’s lots to think about. It seems that every time a new software product is released the system require- ments are increased - everything from the hard drive capacity and CPU speed to the required RAM. One of the apparently obvious ways to gain a speed increase is by upgrading the CPU. But such an upgrade isn’t always cost effective and in some cases simply increasing the available RAM can help considerably to boost the apparent speed of the PC.
Sometimes though the best (and maybe only) option is to upgrade the CPU, although this can be a more involved process than it might at first seem due to socket/motherboard incompatibilities, differing CPU and RAM speed requirements, cooling problems and inevitably assorted knock-on effects causing the upgrade to be anything but cost effective. Also, it is worth remembering that just because the replacement CPU has, for example, double the clock rate of the old unit doesn’t necessarily mean that the new one will increase the processing performance of the PC in question by anything like 100%.

It is named after the British television show Monty Python’s Flying Circus. The use of Python has grown steadily over 1990’s to its current state where it is used in a variety of applications and environments.
Python is a interpreted, imperative, weakly-typed programming language. Unlike a compiled language, interpreted programming languages do not have to be compiled. Instead, the source file is translated (a.k.a. interpreted) by another program (the interpreter) when it is executed. Compiled languages, on the other hand, are executed directly by the computer. Since Python is a weakly-typed language, a variable can have different types during a program’s execution. For example, the variable a could represent a number, a string, and a list in succession in Python; this is not allowed in a strongly-typed language.
These notes assume a basic familiarity with programming concepts. In general, it is assumed one has had some programming experience in an object oriented language (such as C++). Concepts such as compiling, functions/procedures, dynamic memory, conditional statements, input/output, modular programming, namespaces, classes, objects, and inheritance should be familiar.
The examples in these notes will be given in Python 2.4. It is assumed that the reader has access to a a Python interpreter. The resources at the end of this document provide links to downloadable versions of the languages.

These notes will start with the basic foundations of an imperative programming language and build towards object-oriented design.USING MICROSOFT WORD 2007 FOR APA TASKSGet started off right! Set up APA format before you begin typing. You can set formatting just for your current APA paper, or you can change the default so that the formatting stays set for future APA papers. (You can set the default back to MS Word's original settings at any time.) As you become more familiar with Word 2007 for APA, you will find shortcuts for some of the tasks described in this section. The directions below allow the option of changing your default settings so you won't have to keep reformatting each time you start an APA paper.
The APA recommends a serif* 12-point typeface. The University standard is Times New Roman. Keep typeface the same throughout the paper, even for page numbers and headers. Do italicize the type in headings and certain words (refer to APA manual). Do not use boldface or underline in APA papers.
To set font,
1. On the Ribbon Bar, click the Home tab.
2. In the Font section of the Home tab, click the arrow in the right corner.
3. When the Font setting window opens, select Times New Roman, Regular, 12.
Note: Rather than scroll through the list of fonts, you can type the font name in the box.
4. To set the font for the current paper only, click OK.
5. To keep this font setting for all papers, change the default as follows:
a. Click the Default button at bottom left of the Font menu.
b. When the next window opens, click the Yes button..

Languages like C and C++ allow a programmer to write code at a very detailed level which has good execution speed (especially in the case of C). But in most applications, execution speed is not important, and in many cases one would prefer to write at a higher level. For example, for text-manipulation applications, the basic unit in C/C++ is a character, while for languages like Perl and Python the basic units are lines of text and words within lines. One can work with lines and words in C/C++, but one must go to greater effort to accomplish the same thing.
The term scripting language has never been formally defined, but here are the typical characteristics:
• Used often for system administration, Web programming, text processing, etc.
• Very casual with regard to typing of variables, e.g. little or no distinction between integer, floating-point or string variables. Arrays can mix elements of different “types,” such as integers and strings. Functions can return nonscalars, e.g. arrays. Nonscalars can be used as loop indexes. Etc.
• Lots of high-level operations intrinsic to the language, e.g. string concatenation and stack push/pop.
• Interpreted, rather than being compiled to the instruction set of the host machine
Why Python?
The first really popular scripting language was Perl. It is still in wide usage today, but the languages with momentum are Python and the Python-like Ruby. Many people, including me, greatly prefer Python to Perl, as it is much cleaner and more elegant.
