  • Credit Card Fraud Prevention Using PHP and MYSQL
  • Credit card fraud has become pervasive on the Internet. According to MasterCard International, account takeover fraud has increased by 369% since 1995. It has become one of the fastest growing types of fraud, and one of the more difficult to combat. More than $700 million in online sales were lost to fraud in 2001, representing 1.14 percent of total annual online sales of $61.8 billion, according to GartnerG2. Even if the credit card company has given the authorization as to the validity of the card, there are several ways fraudulent cards can be used on your site. The card may have been lost or stolen, but the card owner is yet to report its loss. Or the number on the card (and not the card itself) may have been lifted without the knowledge of the owner. There is also a scam called identity theft, where the card has been issued under false pretenses using someone else's identity and data. As an online merchant, you need to have a system to check the authenticity of orders placed to safeguard your business. While the effort may require additional time and money, it can save you the cost and stress caused by charge-backs for fraudulent orders. You lost your physical products; you lose the sale price; you lose another business opportunity; and you will be fined an additional $15-$50 charge-back fee. If you have a high percentage of charge-backs, your card services company can even blacklist you and cancel your merchant account. You will

  • Chart FX Shines for Silverlight TM Today
  • Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2008 introduces a whole new set of .NET technologies that will revolutionize, once again, the way you develop smart client and web-based applications; the most notable being LINQ, WPF and, of course, Silverlight. For most of us working in and around web application development in the business world, Silverlight is a big step forward; especially if you consider that it provides clean coding practices with extensible languages (e.g. XAML and C#). It also provides some of Visual Studio’s rich programming model that we have become accustomed to and can no longer live without; such as class libraries, debugging capabilities and IntelliSense among many others. Silverlight (especially from 1.1 onwards) can be used by .NET developers to create cross platform browser-based content with genuinely interactive client-side functionality that doesn't rely on a sticky tape of AJAX. Microsoft has been working diligently with third party vendors, like Software FX, to open Silverlight to the vast goodwill that Microsoft partners have to offer. Unfortunately, much of this effort has not been exposed yet as most vendors continue their Silverlight and Visual Studio 2008 integration efforts. At Software FX, we couldn’t wait to put our hands on Silverlight and try to build a Chart FX version that you could work with today. In the end, we were able to implement a Silverlight solution based on Chart FX 7 which will allow you to take advantage of tomorrow’s technology with tools you are familiar with today. In addition, this paper will help you understand

  • WYSIWYG Development of Data Driven Web Applications
  • An emerging trend in Social Networking sites and Web portals is the opening up of their APIs to external application develop- ers. For example, the Facebook Platform, Google Gadgets and Yahoo! Widgets allow developers to design their own applications, which can then can be integrated with the platform and shared with other users. However, current APIs are targeted towards develop- ers with programming expertise and database knowledge; they are not accessible to a large class of users who do not have a programming/database background, but would nevertheless like to create new applications. To address this need, we have developed the AppForge system, which provides a WYSIWYG application development platform. Users can graphically specify the components of webpages inside a Web browser, and the corresponding database schema and application logic will be automatically generated on the fly by the system. The WYSIWYG interface gives instantaneous feedback on what users have created and allows them to run, test and continuously refine their applications. AppForge has been used to create prototype versions of a variety of applications such as an event planning system, a recruiting system, an item trading system and an online course management system. We have also conducted a small and preliminary user study to identify and fix some of the usability aspects of AppForge. As the world moves towards Web 2.0, there is an increasing need to leverage webpages as computing platforms that can enable users to build their own applications. For example, in Facebook and Yahoo! Groups, different groups of users
