  • Standardizing Network Access Control: TNC and Microsoft NAP to Interoperate
  • Two leading network access control standards — TCG’s Trusted Network Connect (TNC) and Microsoft’s Network Access Protection (NAP) — will now interoperate, providing enterprises with simpler, more cost-effective, scalable, and interoperable endpoint integrity and network access control. To improve endpoint and network security, enterprises have been quick to embrace the notion of network access control. The concept is simple: when a device — also known as an endpoint — connects to a network, the user’s identity and the health of the endpoint are checked. If they comply with the network’s policies, access to the network is granted. If not, the endpoint may be remediated by applying the latest patches or scanning for viruses. By improving endpoint security, companies can better defend against a number of increasingly complex Internet-borne attacks. Attackers — including organized criminal rings — now often utilize advanced malware which combines rootkits, Trojan applications, and operating system backdoors to exploit endpoints and steal sensitive data. Attackers’ goals include extortion, identity theft, fraud, and even corporate espionage. Organizations must respond with more advanced endpoint security to effectively safeguard valuable information, comply with regulations, and avoid costly data breach notifications. Yet since network access control products came to market, implementers have faced an uphill battle. First, they had to navigate a wide variety of often incompatible appliance, software, and infrastructure-based options. Then they had to select a proprietary approach, attempt to cobble multiple products together into a workable solution, or opt for one of several incompatible network access control frameworks.   • Mobile Web 2.0: The new frontier
  • The main focus of this research is on the support and enhancement of face to face teaching and learning by using wireless mobile devices (WMDs or smartphones) as a means to leverage the potential of current and emerging collaborative and reflective e-learning tools (e.g. blogs, wikis, RSS, instant messaging, podcasting, social book marking, etc…). These are often called “social software” or web2.0 tools. The research project links the use of freely available mobile friendly web2.0 tools accessed via a smartphone with the learning objectives of a variety of different tertiary education courses. The smartphone’s wireless connectivity and data gathering abilities (e.g. photoblogging, video recording, voice recording, and text input) allow for bridging the on and off campus learning contexts – facilitating “real world learning”. The research is focusing on social constructivist approaches to education (Bijker et al., 1987; Lave & Wenger, 1991; Vygotsky, 1978; Wenger et al., 2002) and a conversational model (Laurillard, 2001, 2007) of teaching and learning. The disruptive nature of web2.0 and mobile technologies (Sharples, 2000, 2001, 2005; Stead, 2006) facilitates a move from instructivist pedagogies to social constructivist pedagogies. The personal, social networking, and context awareness of mobile devices democratise power relationships and are best suited to open learning environments. Disruptive technologies are those technologies that challenge established systems and thinking, requiring change and are thus viewed by many as a threat to the status quo.   • Imagine an Internet-scale Knowledge System where people and intelligent agents can collaborate on solving complex problems in business, engineering, science, medicine, and other endeavors. Its resources include semantically tagged Web sites, wikis, and blogs, as well as social networks, vertical search engines and a vast array of Web services from business processes to AI planners and domain models. Research prototypes of decentralized knowledge systems have been demonstrated for years, but now, thanks to the Web and Moore's Law, they appear ready for prime time. Architectural concepts for incrementally growing an Internet-scale knowledge system are introduced, with descriptions of early commercial deployments in manufacturing and healthcare. I want to share a vision of how to build, or more precisely, grow Internet-scale knowledge systems. Such systems enable large numbers of human and computer agents to collaborate on solving complex problems in engineering, science, and business, or simply managing the complexities of life (say planning a trip or an event). It’s a vision that’s been evolving over 20 years since my days as an AI researcher, and more recently as an Internet entrepreneur. Thanks to the explosive growth of the Web, it’s a vision whose time has come. I also have a larger goal: to bridge the AI and Web communities, which have so much to give to and learn from each other. 25 years ago, at the birth of AAAI, Allan Newell articulated a set of criteria that a system had to exhibit to be considered intelligent (See Table 1).   • The Microsoft .NET software platform integrates various aspects of software development. In .NET applications can be written in a variety of programming languages and can be either stand-alone or web-based. A lab module for CS 453 Electronic Commerce Technologies was developed that instructs students on how to develop complex e-commerce websites using the programming language C# within the Microsoft .NET framework. This project and thesis provided insight into the power of C# and the .NET framework. Student evaluations were constructive and positive overall. There were many good suggestions for expansion of the C# lab module. The Microsoft .NET software platform integrates various aspects of software development. The .NET framework is installed on all machines that contain applications designed in the Visual Studio .NET Integrated Development Environment (IDE). This IDE allows software developers to create fully deployable applications. These applications can be written in a variety of programming languages and can be either stand-alone or web-based. The programming language C# (pronounced see-sharp) is a central language in .NET that evolved from the languages Java and C++. C# and the Microsoft .NET framework has advantages over older languages that make it worth learning. Because there is very little support for C# and the .NET framework in the University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science, few UVA students graduate with basic knowledge of this technology.
