The probability of a single drive failing out of many drives is much higher than that of one failing out of only one. This results in a greater chance of losing the information on your disks. There are ways however, to minimize this effect, even making it more reliable than using single disks. 1.3 Different Types of RAID Configurations There are many different ways in which RAID can be configured, each with its set of advantages and disadvantages. The Silicon Image® controller supports the RAID 0 and RAID 1 configurations. 1.3.1 RAID 0 (Striped) RAID 0 works by breaking down data and spreading it over multiple disk drives. RAID 0 does not protect data from failure, and due to the way it stores data, a fault on one drive would result in failure of the entire array. It does however, have vast improvements in both reading and writing speeds,
  • How to Connect Technology and Passion in the Service of Learning
  • The digital age has vastly expanded people's access to all sorts of information and resources, including educational materials. The Internet has also fostered a new culture of sharing, one in which content is freely contributed and distributed with few restrictions. Indeed, the latest evolution of the Internet, Web 2.0, is creating a new kind of participatory medium that is ideal for encouraging multiple types of learning. Web 2.0 has blurred the line between producers and consumers of content and has shifted attention from access to information toward access to other people. New kinds of online resources — social-networking sites, blogs, wikis, and virtual communities — have allowed people with common interests to meet, share ideas, and collaborate in innovative ways. Two of those ways involve social learning, based on the premise that our understanding of content is socially constructed, through conversations about that content and through interactions around problems or actions. The focus is not so much on what we learn as on how we learn. In addition, social learning concerns not only "learning about" the subject matter but also "learning to be" full participants in the field. That involves acquiring the practices and norms of established practitioners in that field or acculturating into a community of practice, such as an open-source community, where you are required to assimilate the sensibilities and ways of seeing the world embodied within that community. That culture of sharing and participation usually starts with the students themselves, as we see vividly in the complex, multiplayer game

  • Introduction to CORBA
  • The Java Developer Connection SM (JDC) presents a Short Course introducing the Common Object Request Broker Architecture written by Java ™ Software licensee, the MageLang Institute. A leading provider of Java technology training, MageLang has contributed regularly to the JDC since 1996. The MageLang Institute, since its founding in 1995, has been dedicated to promoting the growth of the Java technology community by providing excellent education and acting as an independent resource. To find out more about MageLang’s Java technology training, visit the MageLang web site (http://www.magelang.com/jdc/) . The Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) from the Object Management Group (OMG) provides a platformindependent, language-independent architecture for writing distributed,object-oriented applications. CORBA objects can reside in the same process,on the same machine, down the hall,or across the planet. The Java language is an excellent language for writing CORBA programs. Some of the features that account for this popularity include the clear mapping from OMGIDL to the Java programming language, and the Java runtime environment’s built-in garbage collection. This introductory course will give you an overall view of how CORBA works, how to write CORBA applications in the Java programming language, and illustrates Sun’s Java 2 ORB implementation of CORBA as well as Inprise’sVisiBroker for Java. The approach to presenting CORBA taken in this course is through an example stock trading application. Download pdf Introduction to CORBA
  • SpeedTools Disk Defrag Software for MacOS X
  • The instructions and explanations in this guide assume that you understand how to operate your Macintosh computer. You should, for example, know how to choose, select, launch, and drag by using your mouse. In addition, you should also understand how the desktop, windows, dialog boxes, buttons and file/folders work within the Macintosh environment. For more information about these items, please refer to your Macintosh User?s Guide. About Disk Defrag Intech's Disk Defrag utility is designed to speed up your Macintosh's access to files stored on your hard disks. To do this, the Disk Defrag utility identifies files on HFS+ formatted drives which are stored in more than one place on your drive and rewrites those files so that they form one continuous data stream. This process can dramatically reduce the number of data reads and writes to access your files, thereby significantly speeding up file access related functions. An additional and often overlooked side-benefit is file recoverability in the event of a catastrophic directory corruption of a disk volume. In the event that a disk volume becomes inaccessible due to corruption, a file recovery tool will have a much higher probability of recovering the entire contents of a file if it is physically located in a single place on the disk instead of occupying multiple scattered locations (i.e. fragments). What is File Fragmentation? File fragmentation occurs, typically, as a result of the continuous process of creating, deleting and modifying files. When a file is deleted, for example, it leaves a "hole" (i.e. unused space)
  • Google Technology PDF Book
  • In the beginning, there was BackRub, the service that became Google. Today, Google is most closely associated with its PageRank algorithm. PageRank is a voting algorithm weighted for importance. The indicators of a Web pages importance is the number of pages that link to a particular page. Messrs. Brin and Page soon added another factor which voted for the importance of a Web page. This idea was the number of people who click on a Web page. The more clicks on a Web page, the more weight that Web page was given. Over time, still other factors have been added to the PageRank algorithm; for example, the frequency with which content on a page is changed. Download Google Technology PDF Book
  • Microsoft .NET Mobile Web
  • There’s a new trend in wireless telecommunications, Internet: Internet connectivity via handheld devices. More people are buying wireless handheld devices such as cellular phones, pagers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and they demand access to onlineresources at any timefromany location. Over thepast few years a tremendous number of wireless devices different in their characteristics appeared on market. Developments of web application for these devices become challenging experience due to the following reasons [1]: - ?Different markup languages arenecessary, including HTMLfor PDAs, wireless markup language (WML) for wireless application protocol (WAP) cell phones, and compact HTML (cHTML) for Japanese i-mode phones. - ?Different display capabilities ? screen size (rows and columns) and color capability. For example, a device with higher resolution can show more information and have better viewing quality. Some devices can display images and multiple colors, some can make phone calls, and others can receive notification messages. - ?Devices have different network connectivity, ranging from 9.6-KB cellular connections to 11 MB Wireless LANs. The Mobile Internet Toolkit is thesolution that Microsoft has brought forward to help in mobile web development and overcome the difficulties with it The mobile internet toolkit overview The Mobile Internet Toolkit makes fast and easy to build and maintain sophisticated mobile Web applications. It prevents developers from writing lots of custom code to support manydevices intheir mobileWeb applications.Thetoolkit extends theMicrosoft Visual Studio.NET and the ASP.NET so that you can build a single mobile Web application that automatically adapts the display and interaction for a wide variety of mobile devices, including Web-enabled cell
