  • Microsoft Volt to Adding Supplementary Plane Characters to a Font
  • VOLT is a free tool available from www.microsoft.com/typography. It is mainly designed to add OpenType features to a font but can also be used to add characters in the supplementary planes, which some font editors cannot yet do. This article focuses on adding the characters beyond the BMP. Unfortunately, VOLT is not available for any platform other than Windows. Important background information: VOLT uses glyph IDs as the basis for all its operations. A glyph ID is simply a number that tells where in the font the character is found (first, tenth, fifti- eth, whatever). It has nothing to do with a character’s Unicode value or any other meaningful characteristic; it just uniquely identifies each glyph in the font. Such glyph IDs are a part of any TrueType font and are created for you by your font editor. VOLT also stores information in special additional tables that are not part of a standard TT font; these tables allow you to save the font, test it, and return to edit your work. These tables are removed as the last step in creating a finished font. If you are using FontLab, you need to understand under what circumstances glyph IDs are changed. FL provides many different ways to display the characters in a font: by Unicode value, by name, by glyph ID, etc. You can switch the display around as much as you like; the position of a character in the actual font database (and therefore the glyph ID) is not altered unless you

  • The Practical SEO E-book
  • This E-Book was created with the small business person in mind. Whether you are a musician, a record label owner, or run some other kind of business and have a DIY mentality, this report will help you establish your online presence with a good foundation, or make the most of your current online presence. It is designed for people with little to basic knowledge of internet marketing - not for the advanced web marketer. I myself am not an SEO scientist, but an online marketer who is self- educated in the world of SEO. After much reading and experimentation, I’ve distilled the overwhelming amounts of information into what I think are the most fundamental and easy-to-implement tactics. I wrote it with small businesses, bands and others who are just starting out in mind – budgets are probably skimpy and you want to be able to accomplish results yourself with as little paid help as possible. All these tips can be easily implemented in such circumstances. If you do have a designer – give this book to him/her to implement for you. These tips are designed to be practical, effective and a good starter in the world of SEO – but not exhaustive. This is a free e-book so by all means share it with friends and colleagues. I hope you enjoy it and find it beneficial. I plan on making revisions and updates to it so I’m always interested in constructive feedback that might improve it: info@elemental-consulting.com Some of the topics touched on
  • Adobe Illustrator CS4 Programmer's Guide
  • A plug-in is a library that extends or changes the behavior of Illustrator. On Windows, a plug-in is built as a DLL (dynamic-link library). On Macintosh, a plug-in is built as a bundle that contains a shared library. The plug-in architecture in Illustrator is very powerful. Plug-ins have access to Illustrator’s elegant vector, text, and raster engines, as well as Illustrator’s user interface. The API is a fundamental part of the application; in fact, most of Illustrator itself is implemented as plug-ins. You can create plug-ins that add new tools to the drawing, shading, and raster tools already in Illustrator. Plug-ins can turn Illustrator into a powerful CAD, cartographic, or other custom design application. Users can add or remove plug-ins to quickly and easily customize Illustrator to their needs. The Illustrator API offers several benefits to plug-in developers. Because Illustrator handles large application tasks like printing and saving files, you can concentrate on the implementation of your plug-in’s unique features. Plug-ins do not need to support undo or window updating; these are handled by the API and are invisible to the plug-in. This translates into shorter development cycles. Your plug-in also can take advantage of Adobe Dialog Manager (ADM), a cross-platform, user-interface API. Plug-ins that use ADM floating panels are completely integrated with Illustrator; the panels can be docked, undocked, and controlled as if they were built into Illustrator. • Top 10 Web 2.0 attack vectors
  • Web 2.0 is the novel term coined for new generation Web applications. start.com, Google maps, Writely and MySpace.com are a few examples. The shifting technological landscape is the driving force behind these Web 2.0 applications. On the one hand are Web services that are empowering server-side core technology components and on the other hand are AJAX and Rich Internet Application (RIA) clients that are enhancing client-end interfaces in the browser itself. XML is making a significant impact at both presentation and transport (HTTP/HTTPS) layers. To some extent XML is replacing HTML at the presentation layer while SOAP is becoming the XML-based transport mechanism of choice. WEB 2.0 Security concerns – Reshaping the industry This technological transformation is bringing in new security concerns and attack vectors into existence. Yamanner, Samy and Spaceflash type worms are exploiting “client-side” AJAX frameworks, providing new avenues of attack and compromising some of the confidential information. On the “server-side”, XML based Web services are replacing some of the key functionalities and providing distributed application access through Web services interfaces. These remote capabilities to invoke methods over GET, POST or SOAP from the Web browser itself provide new openings to applications. On other side, RIA frameworks running on XML, XUL, Flash, Applets and JavaScripts are adding new possible sets of vectors. RIA, AJAX and Web services are adding new dimensions to Web application security. Download pdf Top 10 Web 2.0 attack vectors

  • Object-Oriented Programming Strategies in C# or Power Conscious System
  • Low power consumption is a major constraint for battery-powered system like computer notebook or PDA. In the past, specialists usually designed both specific optimized equipments and codes to relief this concern. Doing like this could work for quite a long time, however, in this era, there is another significant restraint, the time to market. To be able to serve along the power constraint while can launch products in shorter production period, object-oriented programming (OOP) has stepped in to this field. Though everyone knows that OOP has quite much more overhead than assembly and procedural languages, development trend still heads to this new world, which contradicts with the target of low power consumption. Most of the prior power related software researches reported that OOP consumed much resource, however, as industry had to accept it due to business reasons, up to now, no papers yet had mentioned about how to choose the best OOP practice in this power limited boundary. This article is the pioneer that tries to specify and propose the optimized strategy in writing OOP software under energy concerned environment, based on quantitative real results. The language chosen for studying is C# based on .NET Framework 2.0 which is one of the trendy OOP development environments. The recommendation gotten from this research would be a good roadmap that can help developers in coding that well balances between time to market and time of battery.
