  • Preservation Of Web Resources: The JISC PoWR Project
  • This paper describes the work of the JISC-funded PoWR (Preservation Of Web Resources) project which is developing a handbook on best practices and advice aimed at UK higher and further educational institutions for the preservation of Web sites and Web resources. The paper summarises the challenges institutions face in preserving Web resources, describes the workshops organized by the project in order to identify the challenges and identify appropriate best practices, and outlines areas in which further work is required. The preservation of Web resources is a topic that is of interest to many involved in digital curation issues. It presents many interesting technical challenges in terms of capture and access, and organisational and resourceoriented problems, some of which are shared with other aspects of digital preservation and some of which are unique to Web resources. How does one select material? When are we trying to preserve information and when is it the experience, behaviour or appearance that is paramount? How straightforward is it to move Web resources between curatorial environments? Most everyone knows that information persistence on the Web is a fragile thing. And, as Rusbridge has observed [1] even those who care about information persistence don’t necessarily do a good job of it on their Web sites. This, despite the fact that good advice about URI persistence has been available for some time [2]. URI persistence is just one small (albeit important) part of the problem that illustrates the wider issues that surround Web preservation in an institutional context. Download pdf
  • BRL-CAD Tutorial Series: Volume I – Overview and Installation Manual
  • Now comprising over one-half million lines of C code, BRL-CAD has become a powerful constructive solid geometry (CSG) modeling package that has been licensed at over 2,000 sites throughout the world. It contains a large collection of tools, utilities, and libraries including an interactive geometry editor, raytracing and generic framebuffer libraries, a network-distributed image-processing and signal-processing capability, and a customizable embedded scripting language. In addition, BRL-CAD simultaneously supports dual interaction methods, one using a command line and one using a graphical user interface (GUI). A particular strength of the package lies in its ability to build and analyze realistic models of complex objects using a relatively small set of “primitive shapes.” To do this, the shapes are manipulated by employing the basic Boolean operations of union, subtraction, and intersection. Another strength of the package is the speed of its raytracer, which is one of the fastest in existence. Finally, BRL-CAD users can accurately model objects on scales ranging from the subatomic through the galactic and get “all the details, all the time.” Download PDF for BRL-CAD Tutorial Series: Volume I – Overview and Installation Manual

  • iMIV Installation Manual
  • The Front installation is for cars without a RTI (navigation system) that are not MELBUS prepped (factory preinstalled MELBUS cable in the trunk). The iMIV can be placed behind the dashboard, in the glove compartment or underneath the passenger seat. You will have to connect both the Front Mount Power Cable and the MELBUS module to HU Cable to the back of your radio. You will also have to connect the iMIV to your iPod with the iPod Cable. The rear installation (with RTI) is for cars with a pre-installed RTI (navigation system). The iMIV will be installed “in chain” with your RTI. The video signal of the iMIV will be hooked up to the RTI, which makes it possible to watch videos from the iMIV on the RTI screen. These videos can be played from an external video source connected to the iMIV (e.g. a DVD player) or an iPod itself (must support video like an iPod video). The iMIV will be installed in the trunk with the long iPod Cable running to the front (middle arm console). Download pdf iMIV Installation Manual
  • 5 Ways Businesses can benefit from Web 2.0
  • Whether we like it or not the technology and culture of Web 2.0 is something all businesses should take note of – but as usual businesses are left trying to work out how it all affects them. To offer some guidance through simple explanation of the technology and 5 Ideas where real issues can be addressed, this white paper goes some way towards clearing the way for businesses to work with Web 2.0. The aim is not to blindly evangelise and urge everyone to become involved – rather to help our clients align Web 2.0 with their business strategy in an appropriate and realistic fashion. What is Web 2.0? Sceptics may see Web 2.0 as nothing more than a game of buzzword bingo. So rather than trying to defining Web 2.0, let’s talk about the companies and websites that are causing the buzz. The most talked about aspect of Web 2.0 is social networking and the most talked about social networking site is MySpace – so much so that the predominantly youthful users have become known as the MySpace Generation. MySpace recently had more page views than Yahoo!, Google and MSN. No one can argue with its influence. So how does MySpace work? Users begin by creating a public profile. They can embellish their basic details with photos, music, videos and thoughts for the day. Users then begin building their network of friends. These friends can be people they know, or stars from TV, radio and the movies. Many bands now start their careers

  • Internet Service Provider Networks: Simplifying POP Architectures PDF
  • The Growth of Internet Traffic While some previous estimates of the Internet’s growth rate were exaggerated, market research firms now generally agree that Internet bandwidth consumption is growing at about 100% per year. Based on its research, IDC expects this growth rate to persist until 2007, with aggregate traffic growing from an estimated 180 petabits/day in 2002 to 5,175 petabits/day by the end of 2007. Sources of traffic growth will include new subscribers and increased Internet usage by existing enterprise subscribers. However, most of the traffic growth is expected to come from wider adoption of broadband access services by existing subscribers. Broadband access encourages increased usage of the Internet and enables new user services such as IP telephony, digital media distribution, etc. Along with the need for more bandwidth to support these new services, residential and business customers alike are expecting higher levels of network reliability and predictability at lower and lower price per bit levels. The ability to predict and guarantee service levels and maintain QoS will not only add to customer or user satisfaction but also open up new competitive advantages by leveraging the network as a strategic asset.
